ACLU report on Obama and civil liberties
Remember when Obama undoing what Bush did and getting back to the Consitution was cool and popular? Turns out Obama has still been as bad as Bush and even worse in some cases.

Last week, the top lawyer and 34-year-veteran of the CIA, John Rizzo, explained to PBS' Frontline that Obama has "changed virtually nothing" from Bush policies in these areas, and this week, the ACLU explains that "most [Bush] policies remain core elements of our national security strategy today."
At some point very soon, this basic truth will be impossible to deny with a straight face even for the most hardened loyalists of both parties, each of whom have been eager, for their own reasons, to deny it (and even the two differences cited there, though positive, are wildly exaggerated by Obama defenders: the torture techniques authorized by Bush were no longer in use and the CIA black sites were empty by the time Obama was inaugurated; by contrast, there is ample evidence that the Obama administration continues to use torture by proxy and rendition/CIA-black-sites by proxy as well).
The report is broken down into sections/chapters, and here are a few highlights:
The ACLU then devotes an entire chapter to the way in which immunity for America's torturers -- bestowed jointly by President Obama and a judicial branch meekly deferential to his and Bush's claims of state secrecy -- has contaminated and degraded the entire justice system and made the future reintroduction of torture a virtual inevitability:
This Surveillance State, like most other Bush/Obama Terrorism policies, is justified by a never-ending orgy of fear-mongering. But other than the enrichment of the private Security State industry (see here and here).
A separate chapter is devoted to what the ACLU calls "A Massive and Unchecked Surveillance Society." It explains: "Using Patriot Act authority, the Bush Administration started -- and the Obama Administration has continued -- to conduct wholesale 'preventive' surveillance of innocent Americans without judicial review." And "the result is a national surveillance society in which Americans’ right to privacy is under unprecedented siege." But little is known about exactly what is being done by this purely unaccountable hidden government -- what The Washington Post calls "Top Secret America" -- because of this:
Pointing to that core theory of both presidencies, the ACLU dispatches one of the most misleading claims of Obama defenders: that the President's failure to close Guantanamo is due exclusively to Congressional obstructionism; in fact, long before Congress acted at all with regard to that camp, the President announced his intention to continue its core injustice -- indefinite detention -- albeit in a different locale:
During the Bush era, the actions and condemnations of the ACLU received ample positive attention from progressives. That, of course, is no longer true, and this damning report will likely be ignored in most of those circles, just as this truly remarkable comment from the ACLU's Executive Director has been. And, as usual, anyone urging that attention be paid to these facts will be met with demands that eyes be diverted instead to how scary Sarah Palin Christine O'Donnell Michele Bachmann Rick Perry is, and then this will all blissfully fade away in a cloud of partisan electioneering even with the election more than a year away.
Either way, this creeping unchecked authoritarianism marches forward unabated, and is now -- rather than the province of the right-wing GOP -- fully bipartisan consensus. I really don't understand how progressives think they'll be taken seriously the next time there is a GOP President and they try to resurrect their feigned concern for these matters; they'll be every bit as credible as conservatives who pretend to be deficit-warriors and defenders of restrained government only when the other party is in power.Remember when Obama undoing what Bush did and getting back to the Consitution was cool... more-

FBI halts training lecture critical of Muslims
Reacting to revelations that FBI training materials cast mainstream Muslims as likely to be violent, terrorist sympathizers, the agency says it is dropping a lecture that criticizes Islam, the Associated Press reports.
At the Bureau's training ground in Quantico, Virginia, agents are shown a chart contending that the more "devout" a Muslim, the more likely he is to be "violent." Those destructive tendencies cannot be reversed, an FBI instructional presentation adds: "Any war against non-believers is justified" under Muslim law; a "moderating process cannot happen if the Koran continues to be regarded as the unalterable word of Allah." ...
A former al-Qaeda hunter said such briefing could backfire.
"Teaching counterterrorism operatives about obscure aspects of Islam without context, without objectivity, and without covering other non-religious drivers of dangerous behavior is no way to stop actual terrorists," said Robert McFadden, who recently retired from the Navy Criminal Investigative Service.

FBI Islam Policy: Agency Teaches Recruits That Mainstream Muslims Sympathize With Terrorists

The FBI is teaching its counterterrorism agents that “main stream” [sic] American Muslims are likely to be terrorist sympathizers; that the Prophet Mohammed was a “cult leader”; and that the Islamic practice of giving charity is no more than a “funding mechanism for combat.”

Former FBI interrogator Ali Soufan admits CIA is preventing full disclosure of the backstory to War on Terror
A former FBI agent who worked at the heart of America's battle against al-Qaeda has told the BBC he is being prevented from telling the truth as he challenges the back story of 9/11 and what has happened since.
Mr Soufan also argues against the effectiveness of interrogation techniques used by the CIA, such as water boarding.
Ali Soufan has not appeared on camera before, but he has now decided to speak out to counter what he sees as a misleading narrative about the last 10 years.
Mr Soufan has direct, first-hand experience of some of the most heated controversies of the past decade: whether 9/11 could have been prevented and whether tactics like the water boarding of al-Qaeda suspects were effective and justified.
Born in Lebanon, Mr Soufan came to America as a teenager and joined the FBI in the 1990s. As one of the only Arabic speakers he was assigned to early investigations on al-Qaeda.
'I threw up'
When the 9/11 attacks occurred, he was in Yemen investigating the bombing of the USS Cole.
The day after the attacks, he met a CIA officer at the US embassy in Yemen. The officer passed him an envelope.
Inside was a report detailing links between people Mr Soufan had been investigating for the warship bombing and two of the hijackers - who had been living in the US for months.
Mr Soufan says that written requests for this kind of information had been made three times before without any result.
"I think it was probably the worst feeling I have ever experienced in my life," he told BBC Newsnight in an interview.
"It was a combination of frustration, anger, sadness, betrayal. The only thing I recall is I left the office, went across the hall to the bathroom and I just threw up.".......

The Dancing Israelis FBI Report – An Independent Analysis
This analysis of the FBI's report on the Israelis arrested on 9/11 and the ongoing coverup on Israeli involvment into 9/11 is very long, but well worth reading if you have the time and patience.

The FBI documents on the Israelis arrested on the day of 9/11 were partly declassified in 2005. However, there are many parts that are still blanked out and classified until 2030 or 2035.
The Israelis were Sivan Kurzberg, Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner and Omer Gavriel Marmari. These men worked for criminal Dominic Suter, an Israeli who ran a fake moving company that was a likely an intelligence front. Dominic Suter, who is still on the FBI's wanted list for the terror attacks of 9/11 (Osama bin Laden didn't even make the FBI's list for 9/11), fled to Israel after being questioned by the FBI.
Section 5 reveals how the FBI's NS-2C Unit of its "National Security Division" based at FBI Headquarters, Washington, D.C., ordered FBI Newark to stop their investigation of the Israelis.The material that has already been released is sufficient to prove that the Israelis did indeed have foreknowledge of the attacks on the WTC.
That is of course consistent with Israel's capability and history of staging false-flag terror, the two hours' advance warning of the WTC attack transmitted via the Herzliya / New York-based Israeli instant messaging service Odigo, the failure of Benjamin Netanyahu's friend Larry Silverstein and his children to turn up for work that day at the World Trade Center, Netanyahu's advance warning of, and Efraim Halevy's intimate knowledge of, the London 7/7 attacks, the $250,000 "loan" received by Bernard Kerik from Israeli billionaire Eitan Wertheimer together with $236,000 in rent paid by Steven C. Witkoff after Kerik visited Israel from August 26-29, 2001 to meet with Wertheimer and then claimed on September 16, 2001 that a "hijacker's passport" had been "discovered", along with multiple corroborating evidence much too numerous to mention in an introduction.
Not surprisingly, experts from such professions as structural engineers, architects, physicists, mechanical engineers, metallurgical engineering graduates, PhD scientists, fire protection engineers, fire-fighters, electrical design engineers, explosives technicians, etc, may be seen speaking out on the ae911truth channel on YouTube, explaining why they know the government's half-baked conspiracy theory about suicidal Arabs with box cutters crashing two planes and managing to bring down three high-rises is believable only by the uneducated and the uninformed.

Frontline: John O'Neill: The Man who Knew
PBS Frontline details FBI Special Agent John O'Neill's efforts to sound the alarms about al Qaeda's growing reach and threat to the U.S., only to be branded a maverick and roundly ignored. O'Neill left the FBI in the summer of 2001 and took a new job as head of security at the World Trade Center, where he died on September 11th.
The 9/11 Commission's investigation revealed that America's $30 billion intelligence community, spread over more than a dozen agencies, was disorganized, fractured and impaired by organizational and legal restrictions on the sharing of information.
These disclosures directly relate to John O'Neill's story. He came tantalizingly close to possibly uncovering the 9/11 plot. But his investigations into the USS Cole terrorist attack and into Al Qaeda's presence in the United States were both undermined by the CIA and FBI's failure to share information with each other.

And if I may add to that by Mr. O'Neill's own admission, the thwarting of him doing anymore work on this in pursuing Bin Laden by the Bush administration. The Millennium Plot that was thwarted by the work of O'Neill led to the total ignoring of this threat under Bush. I suspect due to their ties to the Saudis. I wonder exactly how much Mr. O'Neill may well have uncovered about the money behind this and how far it actually went up the ladder in his own government. There is so much more to this that we may never know, but one thing we do know is that there was at least one man with the tenacity to do what was necessary to pursue the truth, and he paid for it ironically in the WTC with his life today ten years ago.PBS Frontline details FBI Special Agent John O'Neill's efforts to sound the... more-

New Evidence Links Saudi Arabia to 9/11 Hijackers
SARASOTA — Weeks after terrorists brought down the World Trade Center, FBI agents swarmed into a Sarasota gated community to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a wealthy young Saudi couple who apparently had ties to some of the hijackers.
The couple and their two children abandoned their home abruptly, just a week or so before Sept. 11, leaving behind cars, furniture and food on countertops.
According to one published report, the FBI discovered phone calls between the house and at least two of the hijackers and several other terrorism suspects stretching back a year.
Yet until a Fort Lauderdale website reported the news this week, no mention of the couple has ever appeared publicly — not in the Sept. 11 commission report, nor in FBI briefings to congressional investigators, former Florida Sen. Bob Graham said Friday.

FBI Raids 'Connected' Energy Firm Solyndra
The FBI has confirmed to ABC News that federal agents are conducting a search this morning at the offices of Solyndra, the now-bankrupt California solar power company that received $535 million in federal loans under a green energy program touted by President Obama.
The raid is part of a joint operation between the FBI and the Department of Energy's Office of Inspector General, Public Affairs Specialist Peter D. Lee said Thursday morning. Lee said he could not disclose the reason for the raid because the matter is under seal. Karen Sulier, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy's inspector general's office, confirmed its part in the probe.
Beginning in March, ABC News, in partnership with the iWatch News/the Center for Public Integrity, was first to report on simmering questions about the role political influence may have played Solyndra's selection as the Obama administration's first loan guarantee recipient. Federal auditors had flagged the loan, saying some applicants had benefitted from special treatment.
One of the lead private investors in Solyndra was an Oklahoma billionaire who served as an Obama "bundler," raising money during the 2008 presidential campaign.
The bundler, George Kaiser, has declined to comment. His firm, Argonaut Ventures and its affiliates have been the single largest shareholder of Solyndra, according to SEC filings and other records. The company holds 39 percent of Solyndra's parent company, bankruptcy records filed Tuesday show.
Energy officials have repeatedly denied those allegations, saying the selection process was even handed. Until two weeks ago, the Obama administration held out Solyndra as a model for its green energy program, which was devised to create jobs and spur investment in cleaner sources of energy. President Obama personally visited the Solyndra plant last year, and his Energy Department made it the first to win approval of a federal loan guarantee. The $535 million federal investment enabled the company to build a sprawling manufacturing facility.
Last week, Solyndra abruptly shut its doors, announced it was laying off 1,100 workers, and then filed for bankruptcy. Executives with the company and federal energy officials said the company's failure was the result of intense competition from China.
But questions about the federal support for Solyndra continued to grow. In May, ABC News and iWatch News reported that officials at the Office of Management and Budget had raised concerns about the risks of the Solyndra loan, and that the Energy Department had been forced to restructure the deal.
On Wednesday, ABC News and iWatch News reported that Solyndra had also benefitted from the terms of a loan with the Federal Financing Bank. The extremely low interest rates for its loan were the lowest of any Energy Department recipients.
'The FBI Is Here This Morning'
"The FBI is here this morning executing a search warrant," Solyndra spokesman David Miller told iWatch News Thursday. Asked what records the agency was seeking, Miller said: "I can't talk about that. I don't know."
He said the search took the company by surprise. "We'll cooperate with them and given them whatever they are looking for, but certainly it was a surprise," Miller said. "I came to work this morning and they were here and I've been sorting it out."
About the inspector general's involvement, Miller said, "I don't know if that's true. I've only dealt with the FBI agents who were here on site."
Energy officials continued to maintain their decisions about the company were all above board.
"The Department of Energy conducted exhaustive reviews of Solyndra's technology and business model prior to approving their loan guarantee application," said LaVera,. "Sophisticated, professional private investors, who put more than $1 billion of their own money behind Solyndra, came to the same conclusion as the Department: that Solyndra was an extremely promising company with innovative technology and a very good investment."
Republicans in Congress launched their own investigation into the loan program earlier this year, and ABC News confirmed this week that the senate also has questions about the Solyndra loan.
"How did this company, without maybe the best economic plan, all of a sudden get to the head of the line?" said Rep. Fred Upton, R.-Michigan, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, in an ABC News interview last week. "We want to know who made this decision ... and we're not going to stop until we get those answers."

9/11: Anti-Muslim Children's Coloring Book Publisher Calls FBI After Muslims Call Him
The publisher of an anti-Muslim children’s coloring book about the 9/11 attacks has called the FBI and the police to complain that Muslims, especially Muslim journalists, are calling him. Wayne Bell’s company, Really Big Coloring Books, Inc., “We Shall Never Forget 9/11 Coloring Book — Graphic Coloring Novel,” which “features images of Osama Bin Laden and Islamic terrorists. It also shows American citizens upset by the attacks, including a woman with a cross around her neck. But it shows no Muslim Americans mourning the attacks,” according to CBS News.
“These are people from Al-Jazeera that have called in here numerous times, people from Iranian TV, people from Palestinian Hamas TV,” Bell said, “A lot of people from the Islamic community have called in here and said increasingly negative things prior to the book being made and then after we made the book too, about the book itself.”
The Council on American Islamic Relations has criticized the book as one-sided, only portraying Muslims as either “extremists” or “terrorists. ”
Bell was asked to explain the absence of patriotic Muslim Americans in the book who were also opposed to the attacks.

Israel, FBI and 911- We've got them on the ropes
The FBI spying on independent journalist Justin Raimondo and Antiwar.com has only brought more attention to the issue of the FBI 's classifiying the evidence regarding the Israelis celebrating the events of 911.

"According to a memo stamped “Secret,” marked as “routine,” and dated April 30, 2004, we apparently drew the attention of the feds when we posted a copy of a “terrorist suspect list” [.pdf] which had been supplied by the US government to various corporate and governmental agencies, both here and abroad. These documents – including one posted on the web site of an Italian banking association – contained the names of those on a “watch list,” the product of an FBI operation dubbed “Operation Lookout.” The memo acknowledges the list “was posted on the internet” in “different versions,” but says the FBI “assessment was conducted on the findings discovered on www.antiwar.com.”
The April 30 memo – which was issued to FBI counterrorism offices in New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and San Francisco – is prefaced with the following rather ominous “administrative” note:
“This document contains information obtained under the authority of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), 50 U.S.C., Section 1801. Such FISA derived information shall not be used in any criminal proceeding, including grand jury proceedings …”
After a paragraph of précis detailing the basic facts about Antiwar.com – its mission, personnel, and nonprofit status – the details of several database searches are enumerated. A search of the Universal Index (UNI) for antiwar.com “was negative,” however “a scan of the Electronic Case File (ECF) revealed numerous documents for [redacted] and antiwar.com.” This is apparently an index of documents, “intelligence,” and random rumors picked up by various FBI snoops.
The information revealed about Antiwar.com is, naturally, redacted, although we are given a hint as to the origins of some of the dirt they have on us: “File 65T-HQ-1427774 serial 26, dated 04/14/2004, from the Counterintelligence Unit CD-4E/11869 to the Washington Field Office furnished Washington Field Office with information received by [next four lines redacted].”
The redactions are extensive. The next entry refers to another file in the FBI database and starts out in mid sentence:
“…that he was in possession of a document which was written in Italian. This document specified that [redacted] was a suspect on an FBI list. The document contained[redacted] social security number, date of birth, and two previous addresses. [Redacted] was listed as [redacted] on a list dated 05/22/02. This document can be found at www.antiwar.com/justin/CI-08-02.pdf.”
This almost certainly refers to one of my columns about the mysterious “Urban Movers,” the Israeli employees of a New Jersey moving company who were arrested on 9/11/01 on suspicion they had some connection to the attacks. Five Israeli nationals were arrested that day, and held for over three months, subjected to lie detector tests, and later deported back to Israel. The owner of the company, one Dominick Suter, and his wife, fled to Israel the day before the police raided the company’s office and hauled away cartons of evidence: the Suters are among those listed on the “terrorist suspect list.” That was the angle I pursued in my columns, and it looks like the FBI also took an intense interest in the Suters.
The FBI’s intense interest in this “suspect list” verifies that, as I wrote on several occasions, it is indeed authentic. The “enclosures” accompanying the memo include two pieces written by me on the subject: one a piece I wrote for Chronicles magazine about the New Jersey incident, and another antiwar.com column which they wrongly attribute to some website styling itself as “Pravda” (a site which was never authorized to publish my work). While the FBI and the US government have long denounced the persistent stories [.pdf] of “Israeli art students” and “Urban Movers” conducting covert activities on Israel’s behalf in the US as an “urban myth,” their inclusion of Suter and his spouse on their “Operation Lookout” list and their apparent panic that I publicized this fact directly contradicts their denials.

Official FBI files on Urban Moving Systems and the 9/11 'Dancing Israelis'
"There were a number of reasons I retrieved and posted the 4 page police report from the East Rutherford, NJ P.D. on the 9-11-2001 Dancing Israelis incident. If any 9-11 researchers had seen the report, they failed to make it available for public scrutiny. As a consequence, some individuals have concluded that the Dancing Israelis were an "urban legend", based only on researchers' opinions and a slew of seemingly disparate facts."
The FBI's investigation of the Dancing Israelis is close to 450 pages long. Many sections are blanked out, some pages have been withheld, and it won't be completely declassified until 2030 at the earliest. The report is in 6 sections. Black Panthers and the secret history of gun control
A good article on both sides of the second amendment gun control debate.
Obviously, the 2nd Amendment is going to play very heavily in the 2012 debate with the possibility of a total financial collapse on the horizon, anti-2nd Amendment groups are likely to try and capitalize on that in the unfortunate event that it happens.

It was May 2, 1967, and the Black Panthers’ invasion of the California statehouse launched the modern gun-rights movement. On the west lawn of the state capitol in Sacramento 30 young black men and women [arrived] carrying .357 Magnums, 12-gauge shotguns, and .45-caliber pistols. The 24 men and six women climbed the capitol steps, and one man, Bobby Seale, began to read from a prepared statement. “The time has come for black people to arm themselves against this terror before it is too late.”
Opposition to gun control as what drove the black militants to visit the California capitol with loaded weapons in hand. The Black Panther Party had been formed six months earlier, in Oakland, by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Like many young African Americans, Newton and Seale were frustrated with the failed promise of the civil-rights movement. Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were legal landmarks, but they had yet to deliver equal opportunity. In Newton and Seale’s view, the only tangible outcome of the civil-rights movement had been more violence and oppression, much of it committed by the very entity meant to protect and serve the public: the police.
Inspired by the teachings of Malcolm X, Newton and Seale decided to fight back. Before he was assassinated in 1965, Malcolm X had preached against Martin Luther King Jr.’s brand of nonviolent resistance. Teenage Hacker Breaks Into Norway Shooter’s Email
Hackers have reportedly broken into Norway shooter Anders Behring Breivik's email account and turned the contents over to police in an effort to help their investigation. See, hackers aren't all amoral cybermonsters.
The eight-person Norwegian hacking crew Noira, led by a 17-year-old boy named "Frederik," say they broke into two of Breivik's email accounts after he killed more than 70 people in Norway last month. The group turned over the emails to a freelance journalist Kjetil Stormark who was writing a story about the group; he then turned the emails over to the cops. Noira was also behind the hack of Breivik's Twitter account.
Noira is essentially the Norwegian branch of the hacktivist group Anonymous, and it appears they were motivated by similar activist goals—to help the case against Breivik. Stormak says he's not publishing the emails so as not to jeopardize the investigation (boring), but tells Threatpost "The e-mails show some of the activity and contacts made by the perpetrator in the weeks and months leading up to the terror attacks. The mails also tell a tale about his private life." One thing everyone wnats to know is if Breivik was working alone or as part of an international anti-Muslim terrorist group, as he's claimed.
This could cause some weird legal issues for the cops: Will they be able to use evidence that was so obviously illegally obtained? Also, it's sort of awkward for them to be working with "Frederick" even as he's wanted by the FBI in its international Anonymous manhunt, according to Threatpost. Could be a good buddy cop comedy, though.

'Free Topiary' - from Anonymous to celebrity hacktivist
For the Internet collective known as Anonymous, the lulz are bittersweet this week with the arrest of the hacktivist extraordinaire known as Topiary.
"Topiary" is the online alias of 18-year-old Jake Davis. Authorities claim Davis is a key player in the Anonymous collective. Davis is also accused of association with Lulz Security (LulzSec) - the short lived but stunningly successful offshoot of Anonymous.
Davis appeared at a central London court Monday after London's Metropolitan Police, also known as Scotland Yard, announced Sunday they had charged the 18-year-old Davis with multiple offenses. Davis is being charged with unauthorized access to a computer system and conspiring with others to launch online attacks against the website of the U.K.'s Serious Organized Crime Agency, the British equivalent of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Davis is reported to be the creator of press releases for both Anonymous and Lulz Security. Davis is being described by his fellow hacktivists as the "greatest digital graffiti artist of all time". As such, Davis is quickly becoming an Internet celebrity. The fact that media reports describe Davis as being autistic only contributes to the mystique and air of celebrity surrounding Topiary.
Davis supporters, via the Anonymous collective, have launched an online campaign - Free Topiary - planning protests and collecting donations to pay for legal fees.

Anonymous Fires Back at NATO with FBI Hack, Releases 400MB of Their Data
Despite the recent spate of arrests on their side, Anon released 400MB of NATO data courtesy of big-time cybersecurity firm ManTech last night. This is their way of making good on a promise and reiterating that they "aren't scared anymore".
You'll recall that NATO officially condemned Anonymous early last month. Well, as part of their long attack on ManTech, you'll find a bevy of stolen NATO reports from the past several years, financial charts, and pictures of personnel both on duty and at rest. Pretty big, and this is only a portion of the gig of data they say they're sitting on.
Anonymous effectively called ManTech's $100 million contract with the FBI into very loud question. Indeed, ManTech also have contracts with the likes of the DOJ, NSA, and and NASA. All of whom are at risk now that Anon has gotten inside. They end their release with this:
Dear Government and Law Enforcement, we are repeating this message as we have the suspicion you still do not take us seriously: We are not scared anymore and your threats to arrest us are meaningless. We will continue to demonstrate how you fail at about every aspect of cybersecurity while burning hundreds of millions of dollars that you do not even have.

Ultimate hack: LulzSec may have duped British authorities into arresting innocent man
Following reports on Wednesday that British police had arrested a 19-year-old suspect thought to be the spokesperson of notorious hacker group “LulzSec,” new information suggests authorities may have been duped into arresting an innocent man. According to DailyTech, a hacker by the name of “The Jester” has discovered and published chat logs that suggest “Topiary,” the hacker reportedly arrested by authorities on Wednesday, is still at large. According to the exposed chat, Sweden-born Daniel Ackerman Sandberg — the alleged real LulzSec spokesperson — recently assumed the online identity of another man in an effort to mislead authorities. Sandberg, who has reportedly changed his name numerous times, is also said to have been caught on video speaking Swedish, further suggesting that the Scottish man arrested Wednesday by British authorities was not in fact LulzSec’s spokesperson. White House staffer knew about gun running operation last fall
At least one person in the White House knew about the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives gun-running operation three months before weapons from the botched sting were found at the murder scene of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
That’s what a high-ranking ATF official told Congress on Tuesday.
William Newell, the former ATF special agent in charge of the Phoenix field office, told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that he communicated with Kevin O'Reilly, a staffer on President Obama’s National Security Council, about Operation Fast and Furious in September 2010.
At a June 29, 2011 press conference, Obama told reporters, “As you know, my attorney general has made clear he certainly would not have ordered gun running to pass through into Mexico.”
Obama noted that an investigation conducted by the Justice Department’s inspector-general is still ongoing. “I’m not going to comment on the current investigation. I’ve made very clear my views that that would not be an appropriate step by the ATF, and we’ve got to find out how that happened.
