“Kicks 4 Cranes” is a hauntingly lovely short film by Seattle-based filmmaker Matt Cibelli, a film that’s sure to please both crane lovers and shoe fetishists. Cibelli’s work shifts between narrative and experimental styles with a beguiling sense of simplicity, contrasting beautiful scenes of construction cranes with a bemused audio track of women talking about their collections of shoes.
“Kicks 4 Cranes” is a hypnotic piece of work, and like all good experimental films, in the end its subjects are even more mysterious than before. However, it also evokes considerable attention to the way in which beauty often needs to be constructed and maintained, not unlike a giant office building. And the film does the obverse as well, showing us that a giant, gleaming construction crane against a sky can, in its own way, be as enticing as a pair of fashionable pumps.
This piece includes a number of colorful photographs from the film, as well as the amazingly hypnotic short, “Kicks 4 Cranes.”

Guests of the newly-opened Standard Hotel in New York will get a view of heaven when they ascend the elevator to their rooms and a glimpse of hell on the way back down to street level thanks to Marco Brambilla.
After seeing the director and video artist's work in a gallery last year, boutique hotelier Andre Balazs asked him to create a permanent installation to be displayed on high-definition monitors in the Standard's elevators.
Brambilla responded by creating Civilization, a video mural based on Dante's Divine Comedy that scrolls in synch with the movement of the 18-storey hotel's elevators. "The idea of doing a ‘video mural' had interested me for quite some time and the journey from hell to heaven depicted in this way seemed to be a good fit," he said in a statement about the work.
Produced by Toronto-based Crush, Civilization is comprised of 400 individual channels of looped clips: obscure film and stock footage, Hollywood movie moments and original CG imagery. Brambilla (who is repped for commercials by The Ebeling Group) spent three months researching and cataloguing footage before spending six weeks - working mostly at night - pasting together painterly collages in Flame and ordering them into a narrative journey: hell, lower purgatory, middle purgatory, upper purgatory, heaven, upper heaven and back to lower hell.Guests of the newly-opened Standard Hotel in New York will get a view of heaven when... more

"gridworks2000-anim09" is a reproduction of work originally created while the artist worked in information visualization at Master-List2000.COM. The drawings are recreations from memory. They were drawn individually in both ink on paper and ascii plaintext over the course of 6 months just after the artist was laid-off from the organization. As a part of the severence agreement, the artist was required to destroy all of his personal copies of his work for them.

“Omar-Hot-Pursuit-Search” is short animated experimental art film that is part of the PSST! 3 Film Series. PSST! 3 is a collaborative film project that produces original short films, with each film comprised of three sections produced by three different teams. This is a technique derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game Telephone, which is applied here to the arts of motion graphics, animation and film-making. The first part of the film, “Omar”, is a victorian-sepia-dream in which a child fishes for kite-creatures in the sky, and ends up being lifted to an incredible aerial adventure. “Hot Pursuit” is a thrilling interlude, an aerial view of a bad guy car chase with cops in hot pursuit of the robbers. In “Search”, a boy creates the magical, surreal super-flat universe about which he dreams.

A visual study of Wall Street, New York, USA by filmmaker Amelia Bryne + music video for The Frequency. www.thefrequencymusic.net
"This is a video for The Frequency, an awesome L.A. band. I picked this song because of the title. I made the video with a small camera that I took down to Wall Street in the mornings in October 2008 to see what was happening there with all the news about the financial crisis. There were tourists in red pants taking photos of the stock exchange, women in high heels, sunshine. I edited the video as its own story, and then put it together with the music." - Amelia Bryne www.MISociety.netA visual study of Wall Street, New York, USA by filmmaker Amelia Bryne + music video... more

Cycle of Psychosis is a split screen looping experimental video that uses manipulation of time and space to reveal a cross-city manhunt. A series of low lit and grainy shots builds a suspenseful atmosphere where the pursuit of one character evolves into a psychological investigation.
The music by Erik Zajcew adds a complex element that creates a disturbed and dark mind space.
This received second place in the experimental category at the Boomtown Film and Music Festival.Cycle of Psychosis is a split screen looping experimental video that uses manipulation... more
