Blue Iris is the 2008 color of the year, says Pantone

The supreme overlord of all that is color, Pantone, has deemed Blue Iris or PANTONE 18-3943 the "Color of the Year".

“Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspects of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic.”

"Pantone provides standardized palettes for a number of industries, mainly graphics, fashion textiles and interior design. Not surprisingly, Pantone’s competitors in the area of forecasting are skeptical of its choice, if not the motive behind it."

I as well am a bit unconvinced of that particular shade of blue being the color of the year. I do side with Pantone on it being in the blue family, but with the way things are going in the world right now I picture a much darker blue like PMS 541 Blue. The Blue Iris seems more like a blue we should aim for.

Many may jump to attack the color choice saying that Green should trump Blue based on the whole environmental trend that is occurring. But take a look into "Going Blue" instead of "Going Green" and you will see that there is a increasing concern brewing right below the surface regarding a future water Crisis.

"JWT, the advertising and marketing company, just named blue as one of the top 10 trends for 2008, saying that “blue is the new green,” particularly as it denotes ecological concerns."

While it might seem like green is running the show, with numerous companies changing their logos/image by incorporating green to convey the message that they are environmentally friendly, blue has had a very large role in water cooler talk.

After 8 years of "red" politics in the US, the entire world seemed to embrace the idea of a change to blue. Not only is blue the color of the democratic party, Blue is also the runaway winner when people are asked to associate a color with the words “trust,” “security,” and “reliability.” It's no wonder people like the color blue.

"In a study reported by Joe Hallock of Site Difference Corporation, 35% of women and 57% of men said blue was their favorite color, easily beating out the next most-preferred colors, purple and green."
