so many of us have engaged in sexual activity outside of marriage today, it's very difficult for us to preach abstinence to our young people, and keep a straight face. Even worse, in many ways we have turned our backs on the subject, choosing to pretend that the problem does not exist.so many of us have engaged in sexual activity outside of marriage today, it's... more

The main aspect of the report worth noting is that the woman approached these sexual encounters for themselves, not as a precursor to marriage, or even relationships. Grownup alert: That’s just the way sex on campus often is. (This post is directed to Americans; in much of Europe people already know these things about youthful sex.)
Nonetheless, despite her frankness and her direct approach to sex, the woman’s insecurities occasionally do surface in her “report.” And, she seemed to need alcohol to fuel her sexploits. But her regret is especially real now that American blue noses have gotten a hold of her experience. The main aspect of the report worth noting is that the woman approached these sexual... more

Sunday will be one of the busiest days of the year's wedding calendar with couples hoping the date 10/10/10 will bring them luck.
Some register offices are opening on a Sunday for the first time after couples asked if they could marry on the date.
Manchester Register Office is opening for the only the third time since it started holding weddings in 1837.
Ngaryan Li, who is marrying Steven Higham, said: "I'm of Chinese origin and it's seen as a very good date."
She added: "It means the perfect day."

Sarah (a pseudonym), was in her mid-20s when her husband died in an accident.
Once her grief had begun to subside, one of Sarah's friends introduced her to her brother.
"We took it slowly, but eventually I found myself coming out of the darkness," Sarah, who lives in central Israel and requested anonymity, recalled recently. "Life became sweet again."
In order to marry, the couple, who are not particularly religious, had to register at the stringently religious Rabbinate, the sole government agency with the authority to grant Jewish marriage permits.
No civil marriage exists in Israel and non-Orthodox marriages performed in the country are not recognized by the state.
When Sarah presented the registrar with her late husband's death certificate, he asked if her deceased husband had any children. When she said no, he asked whether her late husband had any brothers. Sarah said yes.
"Then you need to do the halitza ceremony," the registrar told her, she said. "Otherwise you won't be able to marry, ever."

Perusing the Family Research Council’s webpage is always a bonanza for me because there is always something there which can be pointed out as an example of how religious right groups distort studies and current events to push the false “radical homosexual activists are hurting America” narrative.
And today didn’t disappoint. There is a piece, Ten Facts About Counterfeit Marriage, which supposedly gives a point-by-point reason as to why gay marriage is wrong.
Now many of the points are basic arguments with no facts backing them up as to why heterosexual marriage is “pure as the driven snow” and how gays and lesbians want to drive a bunch of tire tracks into this snow.
But when FRC starts spouting studies, the organization gets into trouble in terms of accuracy:
Many homosexuals and their sex partners may sincerely believe they can be good parents. But children are not guinea pigs for grand social experiments in redefining marriage, and should not be placed in settings that are unsuitable for raising children.
Transient relationships: While a high percentage of married couples remain married for up to 20 years or longer, with many remaining wedded for life, the vast majority of homosexual relationships are short-lived and transitory. This has nothing to do with alleged “societal oppression.” A study in the Netherlands , a gay-tolerant nation that has legalized homosexual marriage, found the average duration of a homosexual relationship to be one and a half years.
Serial promiscuity: Studies indicate that while three-quarters or more of married couples remain faithful to each other, homosexual couples typically engage in a shocking degree of promiscuity. The same Dutch study found that “committed” homosexual couples have an average of eight sexual partners (outside of the relationship) per year. Children should not be placed in unstable households with revolving bedroom doors.
But the study FRC is referring to had nothing to do with same-sex marriage or same-sex households with children for a number of reasons.
The study was conducted by one Maria Xiridou of the Amsterdam Municipal Health Service. Her study did not look at gay marriage but was designed to “access the relative contribution of steady and casual partnerships to the incidence of HIV infection among homosexual men in Amsterdam and to determine the effect of increasing sexually risky behaviours among both types of partnerships in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy.”
For this study, Dr. Xiridou received her information from the Amsterdam Cohort Study of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS Among Homosexual Men. To gain this information, researchers studied 1,800 gay men between the years of 1984- 2000.
Same sex marriage was legalized in the Netherlands in 2001, thus making the information irrelevant to points about gay marriage. Information for the Amsterdam Cohort Study is found here.
Furthermore, lesbians were not included in the study and, as far as it is known, there were no questions in the study regarding lgbt households with children.
Now far be it from me to start pointing fingers, but I noticed how cleverly FRC pushed that talking point without actually stating that the couples in the study were married.
Also where would the FRC piece be without a phony panic story about what could happen if same-sex marriage became legal across the country:

Many couples believe in togetherness, which can be a good thing. However, there are dangers to investing jointly that should give even the closest duos pause.
Remember the best-selling book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, by John Gray? The difference in the way men and women view the world has particular applicability to investing.
As many women know, men generally don’t lack confidence. They typically love the “action” of buying and selling stocks. The fact that trading increases costs, which decreases returns, doesn’t dent their enthusiasm for risk taking. I’ve found that male investors tend to seek the “big score,” often unaware of the “big risk” of losing a significant part of their invested capital.
Many women have told me that they find the markets pretty intimidating. Many men don’t admit their fear. They believe they can handle it.
A lot of men consider themselves to be very knowledgeable investors. Women tend to have a different view of their investing knowledge. A 2009 survey found that 73 percent of men professed having “a general knowledge of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds,” compared to only 40 percent of women.
Given these vast differences in attitudes, you have to question the wisdom of men and women investing jointly. Many couples believe in togetherness, which can be a good thing. However, there are... more

BECAUSE - "Marriage" IS a Bad Idea,....and it should have been discarded a long time ago by anyone rational. You don't have to be an atheist to think that some bad habits and crazed customs are recreational activities for NUT CASES. Rational "CIVIL UNIONS" are all ANYONE should be willing to tolerate, let alone actively encourage. Mind you, this is not an attack on "bonding" and legal protections,.....this is inveighing against the whole Judeo- Christian roots and baggage associated with the habit. Time to "Move On. God" out of this cultural land fill.
- God is Imaginary - 50 simple proofs -
- Think about Marriage as described in the Bible
Most Christians consider marriage to be a sacred act created by God in the Bible. For example, on this page you can see Rick Warren stating: "I'm opposed to redefinition of a 5,000 year definition of marriage." At many weddings you will hear a Bible passage like Genesis 2:24 used to show God's view of marriage:
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
There is also the commandment that forbids adultery. If digging deeper, a Christian might selectively pull out other verses from places like Ephesians, as described in this article:
What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?
In doing this, however, the Christian is ignoring the rich tapestry of marriage types condoned by God and the Bible.
For example, there are many examples of polygamy in the Bible, all of them condoned by God. King David, for example, had many wives. Seven of his wives are listed in 1 Chronicles 3:1-5. In Acts 13:22 God says, "'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do." And many other characters in the Bible had two or more wives, including Jacob.
The case of Jacob (described in Genesis chapters 28, 29 and 30) is fascinating because it shows several other attributes of Biblical marriage. For example, Jacob earns his wife as payment for seven years of work done. It is a contract between Jacob and the woman's father – the woman is mere property in a transaction and has no say in the matter.
However, the man that Jacob is working for tricks Jacob by giving him the wrong sister, and corrects the problem by letting Jacob work for another seven years for the second daughter. Now Jacob has two wives.
But the second sister is barren. So the second sister gives Jacob her slave to sleep with and have a child. All of this is done as part of God's plan and with God's active intervention (for example, God makes the second sister barren).
More charming cultural legacy follows at...

With the new school year about to commence many New York area Jewish parents will have to find a way to fund their children's day school tuitions. In my June 10, 2010 article I shared my interview with Mindi Wernick and Malkie Grozalsky in which they speak of having made financial sacrifices to send their children to a Jewish school. In my interview with Nassau County residents Keith and Cindy Hamada, Keith speaks of day school tuition as a form of birth control that limits the sizes of Jewish families.
Although Keith and Cindy belong to an Orthodox synagogue and my wife Shoshana and I belong to a Conservative congregation, I was struck by how similar our levels of observance are, which teaches us that labels don't tell the whole story. With the new school year about to commence many New York area Jewish parents will have... more

Potable water, as it is often said, is life. The lack of it affects all the spheres of human activity - health, social, education, agriculture, politics and economics. The lack of this essential commodity makes life meaningless. Its importance can only be equated to air.
The difficulty in accessing water in Sissala Communities has made young girls and women to ask suitors about the availability of potable water in their communities before accepting their proposals. If the suitor’s community does not have its own water source, they would want to know the distance from the nearest potable water source and if it is far, they would most likely to turn down the proposals.
They would also find out whether the community their lovers are coming from are good farmers and could produce enough food to feed their people.
The accessibility to clean water and food production are the determining factors for winning the love of many a young girl in the area. The reason for this is that the people in the communities are predominately farmers and any time lost in search of water by women will not be tolerated by their husbands, who would need their assistance on the farms.
These revelations came to light at a forum on water and sanitation held in Funsi in the Wa East District of Upper West Region, recently.
Madam Adiata Marifa, a housewife from the Gbantala, told the forum that young men in the village were finding it difficult to get wives to marry because the community does not have potable water source nearby, in spite of numerous attempts by water agencies to provide potable water have failed.
The people have been continuously drinking from unsafe water sources, such as ponds, rivers and streams and during the dry season women in the community have to walk long distance daily basis to fetch water leaving their domestic chores unattended to.
Madam Marifa said many of the women in the community were aged and with young men not getting young girls to marry to replenish the population the future of the community was becoming bleak and appealed to the Government to consider mechanizing water from the Kulun River for the people.
Another woman from Tampaala, Madam Abeta Issahaku, said women spent more hours looking for water from unsafe sources. Besides, one can not go to the pond twice to fetch water because of the distance.
“We are always tired when we return home and sometimes the water we fetch is not always sufficient for cooking let alone bathing. Children suffer a lot because we do not get sufficient water to drink and cook for them. Our men are not helping us to fetch water, they only go to the farm and expect us to come to the farm to help them on their farm work”. She lamented.
Madam Issahaku said women are unable to wash their clothes or clean their surroundings as they have to leave their homes early to go and waste many hours queuing to fetch water. Other community members call people from Tampaala dirty people because they do not bath regularly and also do not wash their clothes frequently.
“We give birth to beautiful and handsome children but as they grow up, they look dirty and are unable to mix with other children. They look inferior before their colleagues from different communities.” Madam Issahaku said.
She said many children are dying in the community as a result of diarrhoeal and other waterborne diseases, adding that the eradication of guinea worm would be a mirage if some communities were still drinking from unwholesome water sources
The testimonies from Chaggu Paani and Jankori Deriyiri communities were not different. Mr Nousah Sobo from Jankori Deriyiri said the people have been drinking from a river and during the dry season the water became muddy and women had to add ash to it for the dirt to settle before they sieve it for drinking.
He said teachers posted to these communities to teach are unable to cope up with the situation and have abandoned the schools. He appealed to the Government and non-governmental organisations in the water sector to find alternative ways of providing potable water for the communities.
ProNet North, a local non-governmental organisation, dedicated to the provision of potable water for communities in the Upper West Region in collaboration with WaterAid Ghana organised the forum.
It was under the “End Water Poverty Campaign” for the often excluded voices, such as women, persons with disability, and children to speak out their minds on how water and sanitation poverty impacts their lives at the local level.
