If we speak about people who shaped informatics / software engineering, we cannot forget "the father of information age", Shannon, who died nearly exactly 10 years ago, on february 24th, 2001. One of his writing was claimed the "Magna Charta of the Information Age" - and probably this essay shaped our present much more than the now 10 years old other "Magna Charta". His master's thesis from MIT is the most influental master's theses ever written, as of today: it's about the application of boolean algebra to digital circuits, so, in short: he invented digital logic.... http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/36479-the-ultimate-machine-by-claude-elwood-shannon-qthe-father-of-information-ageqIf we speak about people who shaped informatics / software engineering, we cannot... more

In part 1 of this two-part video, Stanley Maloy, Dean of the College of Science at San Diego State University, takes us on a tour of the microbiology related exhibits at the festival.
Featured in this episode are the American Society for Microbiology booth "Where the Microbes Are (Everywhere!)" and the members of the Microbial Sciences Initiative at Harvard University. Watch as Maloy introduces us to the power of microbes through demonstrations of biospheres created in a bottle, the bioluminescent bobtail squid, and the many different roles microbes play in the creation of food products. On October 23 2010, MicrobeWorld attended the first annual USA Science and Engineering... more

A robotic suit that gives the wearer superhero-like strength will be used by soldiers in war zones within the next five years, according to the firm behind them.
The XOS2 suit (pronouced "exos") allows the user to carry 11 stone (70kg) without breaking a sweat and punch through four planks of wood at once. Annoyingly, it won't be easy for any budding vigilantes to get their hands on one; it's being developed for the military with two applications in mind. The combat variant will be a waste-down suit designed to help with supporting heaving backpacks, while the logistics version is a full suit intended to be used for carrying supplies and heavy equipment, like tank shells.
Test engineer Rex Jameson, from Raytheon, the company behind the suit said: "If you push at the boards (planks), you are, like, "I'm never going to be able to do that" but then you walk up and do it and away they go."

Until we can train dogs to climb, it's poor chumps like the guys in this video who have to shinny up stomach-churningly high communications towers to fix them whenever there's a problem.
The tower in this particular video is 1768 feet high. That's over 700ft taller than the Eiffel Tower and 300ft taller than the Empire State Building. And there's no reassuringly safe viewing platform at the top.
In order to fix antenna and other gizmo-bits at the very top, a team of engineers take a lift to within 100ft or so from the top and then slowly climb the rest of the way; without ropes and with a petrifying fall to the death should they slip.
Still, gorgeous view.

Weird-looking cars are a dime a dozen. Far less common are weird-looking cars that can also fly AND have approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Indeed, as far as we know, there's only one of those babies: The Terrafugia Transition.
The private aircraft/funky-looking car has been in the news before. But the recent announcement that it's going into production sparked mega-searches on the Web. Almost immediately, online lookups for "terrafugia transition" and "terrafugia transition pictures" both, well, took off.
A popular article from the UK's Daily Telegraph explains that the FAA's special exemption allows the vehicle to function as both a "light aircraft" and a car. Normally, for a plane to meet the "light aircraft" designation, it can weigh no more than 1,200 pounds. The Terrafugia Transition weighs 1,320, due primarily to the number of car-related safety features, like airbags and crumple zones. The "light aircraft" designation is key, because licenses for planes with that label require only 20 hours of flying time. Fewer hoops to jump through means more potential sales.
So, how does the plane/car work? Check out the flying car's official video below. So far, 70 people have placed a deposit. The total retail cost: $194,000. Expensive, but really, can you put a price on skipping commercial flights?

It’s summer time in Southwestern Ontario and as many jovial Canadians venture outdoors after being sheltered from the snow for 6 months, we no doubt feel a sense of release and exhilaration as we venture off into the longer, warmer days that await us this season. However, along with the extended daytime hours, farmer tans and time spent on the patio, summer – for many Ontarians, comes with the trepidation of looming energy bills that tend to increase from cranking up the air conditioners. Sunburns won’t be the only discomfort over June, July and August when electricity bills increase by $200, $400 or more.
Spend your summer miserable and sweating or dig deep into your wallet – not much of a choice if you’re one of the 250 million Americans who live in climates where heat, humidity or both are a catch-22 for three to twelve months a year.
However, a comforting solution may be on the way, thanks to a new technology of filters, coolers and drying agents.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has invented a new air conditioning process with the potential of using 50 percent to 90 percent less energy than today’s top-of-the-line units. It uses membranes, evaporative cooling and liquid desiccants in a way that has never been done before in the centuries-old science of removing heat from the air.
“The idea is to revolutionize cooling, while removing millions of metric tons of carbon from the air,” NREL mechanical engineer Eric Kozubal, co-inventor of the Desiccant-Enhanced eVaporative air conditioner (DEVap), said.
“We’d been working with membranes, evaporative coolers and desiccants. We saw an opportunity to combine them into a single device for a product with unique capabilities.”
