Companies Like Top 10 Produce LLC and Harvestmark are putting technology in place to read the small stickers on produce items by using mobile phones. Once Accessed, these stickers can let consumers use social media to communicate directly with the farmer or to leave reviews about the produce. Also, the sustainability of the growing practices can be considered by consumers who are interested in supporting sustainable agriculture. And, because the produce is traceable, consumers can confirm if the produce is locally grown.
Top 10 Produce only licenses independent producers and limits the amount that any single grower can label under the Top 10 label to 1 million dollars or less per year, to even the playing field between small and large farming operations.
Top 10 uses the Databar codes already used by in-store scanners and Harvestmark has 2d codes unique to Harvestmark.

PCI-Media Impact, a New York-based non-profit with 25 years experience using communications for development, is initiating its sixth year of the My Community program on November 2 with an international training on Entertainment Education and Social Marketing in Lima, Peru.
The 32 selected participants – including radio hosts, journalists, community activists, and professors– representing Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, will participate in a five-day hands-on training and learn how to design, produce and broadcast entertaining radio soap operas that address urgent community needs.
“This year’s training promises to be one of the best,” said Media Impact Programs Director, Sean Southey. “Between staff, community activists and media leaders, and representatives of current My Community coalitions, we will have representatives from leading NGOs and grassroots social movements in Latin America coming together to discuss how to create global changes beginning at the local level.”

The "Farmville app" for Facebook has quickly become the most popular app of all time in Facebook's short history. Over 62 million users - and growing!
My favorite part, one pregnant lady says about her husband, "I was starving ... and he told me I’d have to wait a few more minutes so he could HARVEST HIS RASPBERRIES! I waited ... in the car and waited for his stupid raspberries to be harvested.”
I wonder what this says about our society? We are all stuck at desks, in school, living in cities and our cars - yet, 62 million of us would rather escape to a farm. I've always said, living on a farm would be much easier...I think this obsession solidifies that assumption.

IT'S FUNNY CAUSE ITS TRUE......
The Let-Me-Tell-You-Every-Detail-of-My-Day Bore. "I'm waking up." "I had Wheaties for breakfast." "I'm bored at work." "I'm stuck in traffic." You're kidding! How fascinating! No moment is too mundane for some people to broadcast unsolicited to the world. Just because you have 432 Facebook friends doesn't mean we all want to know when you're waiting for the bus.
The Self-Promoter. OK, so we've probably all posted at least once about some achievement. And sure, maybe your friends really do want to read the fascinating article you wrote about beet farming. But when almost EVERY update is a link to your blog, your poetry reading, your 10k results or your art show, you sound like a bragger or a self-centered careerist.
The Friend-Padder. The average Facebook user has 120 friends on the site. Schmoozers and social butterflies -- you know, the ones who make lifelong pals on the subway -- might reasonably have 300 or 400. But 1,000 "friends?" Unless you're George Clooney or just won the lottery, no one has that many. That's just showing off.
The Town Crier. "Michael Jackson is dead!!!" You heard it from me first! Me, and the 213,000 other people who all saw it on TMZ. These Matt Drudge wannabes are the reason many of us learn of breaking news not from TV or news sites but from online social networks. In their rush to trumpet the news, these people also spread rumors, half-truths and innuendo. No, Jeff Goldblum did not plunge to his death from a New Zealand cliff.
The TMIer. "Brad is heading to Walgreens to buy something for these pesky hemorrhoids." Boundaries of privacy and decorum don't seem to exist for these too-much-information updaters, who unabashedly offer up details about their sex lives, marital troubles and bodily functions. Thanks for sharing.
The Bad Grammarian. "So sad about Fara Fauset but Im so gladd its friday yippe". Yes, I know the punctuation rules are different in the digital world. And, no, no one likes a spelling-Nazi schoolmarm. But you sound like a moron.
The Sympathy-Baiter. "Barbara is feeling sad today." "Man, am I glad that's over." "Jim could really use some good news about now." Like anglers hunting for fish, these sad sacks cast out their hooks -- baited with vague tales of woe -- in the hopes of landing concerned responses. Genuine bad news is one thing, but these manipulative posts are just pleas for attention.
The Lurker. The Peeping Toms of Facebook, these voyeurs are too cautious, or maybe too lazy, to update their status or write on your wall. But once in a while, you'll be talking to them and they'll mention something you posted, so you know they're on your page, hiding in the shadows. It's just a little creepy.
The Crank. These curmudgeons, like the trolls who spew hate in blog comments, never met something they couldn't complain about. "Carl isn't really that impressed with idiots who don't realize how idiotic they are." [Actual status update.] Keep spreading the love.
The Paparazzo. Ever visit your Facebook page and discover that someone's posted a photo of you from last weekend's party -- a photo you didn't authorize and haven't even seen? You'd really rather not have to explain to your mom why you were leering like a drunken hyena and French-kissing a bottle of Jagermeister.
The Obscurist. "If not now then when?" "You'll see..." "Grist for the mill." "John is, small world." "Dave thought he was immune, but no. No, he is not." [Actual status updates, all.] Sorry, but you're not being mysterious -- just nonsensical.
The Chronic Inviter. "Support my cause. Sign my petition. Play Mafia Wars with me. Which 'Star Trek' character are you? Here are the 'Top 5 cars I have personally owned.' Here are '25 Things About Me.' Here's a drink. What drink are you? We're related! I took the 'What President Are You?' quiz and found out I'm Millard Fillmore! What president are you? You probably mean well, but stop. Just stop. I don't care what president I am -- can't we simply be friends? Now excuse me while I go post the link to this story on my Facebook page.IT'S FUNNY CAUSE ITS TRUE......

Few things have changed faster than the way we communicate. Coupled with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or green movement, there has been an explosion of information available about how and what companies and organizations are doing to improve society and the environment.
During the past year, at least three major events have influenced how communications relate to CSR:
1) The new administration in Washington is focused on volunteerism, green-collar jobs, alternative energy and other CSR issues.
2) Bernie Madoff and the “collapse” of Wall Street spotlighted (once again) the need for greater transparency and corporate governance.
3) Consumers are demanding information about what the companies from which we buy our goods and services are doing to have a positive impact on society, improve the environment, and in general “save the world.” Companies are finally starting to be held accountable and responsible for the impact and influence they can have to affect change, and they realize the need to communicate it. From a media and PR perspective, this presents both opportunities and challenges.
Any company can issue a press release talking about all the good they’re doing, and consequently greenwashing — and a lack of authenticity has become almost epidemic. It seems every brand wants to capture the green consumer.
The media challenge: To communicate effectively in ways that a growing, “green-focused” audience, consisting of varied demographics, is responsive to and can trust. Authenticity must absolutely be obvious. The age-old, traditional press release isn’t what it used to be. Yes, there’s still a place for it in modern communications, but it’s become widely accepted that its impact is diminished.
Enter blogs and bloggers, videos, podcasts, and various commentaries … all new and different ways to reach an audience no longer receptive to traditional methods such as press releases. Combine this with issues that people are passionate about, that affect their lives and their children’s lives, such as corporate responsibility and sustainability … and that’s the mix that must be communicated. To address that, successful organizations have begun to realize that the value of delivering their messages, consistently in all different media formats, engages a passionate audience.

We limit the combined total dollar amount of item-labeled produce that any single grower can sell under our two item labels to less than $1 Million US dollars annually. This is our small effort to even the playing field between larger and smaller farms. Research shows that larger farms, particularly those with annual revenues in excess of $1 Million per year have a significant competitive advantage as compared to small family farms. Top 10 Produce LLC will invite socially conscious consumers to play a role by alerting the consumer that our brand provides a strategic advantage in favor of smaller farms, and by reminding buyers that we only license independent growers. 100% of our items have a transparency enabling barcode.
This item level barcode will be scanned by mobile phones to tell the consumer about the farmer, whether the produce is locally grown (including a map showing the location of the farm as compared to their current location based on their cell phone's GPS ), and anything else the consumer is interested to know about that produce item. Consumer reviews of fresh produce will be available to shoppers and chefs alike.
Suggestions are encouraged and welcome, so please share thoughts, concerns, criticisms and questions. We are listening carefully. We limit the combined total dollar amount of item-labeled produce that any single... more

Changes made to Facebook this weekend have ended up confusing some users and offending others.
The site now recommends 'reconnecting' with people you haven't seemingly spoken to (i.e. written on their wall) in a while. All well and good... except when some of them are dead.
It seems Facebook's algorithm understandably can't always tell if somebody has died; if their profile hasn't been deactivated it just assumes they're alive. The problem is that friends of the deceased who can't bring themselves to de-friend their buddy have started getting reminders to get back in touch.
Along with the dead, the algorithm is also recommending ex-boyfriends or girlfriends, ex-friends or those really, really boring people who you don't talk to for a very good reason.Changes made to Facebook this weekend have ended up confusing some users and offending... more

Apparently employees have admitted to wasting on average 40 minutes a week on Twitter & other social networking sites. This survey is going to lead to alarm amongst a lot of employers & confirm their worst suspicions that employees everywhere are not to be trusted.
In reality the figure is probably higher as Morse, the IT services and technology company who commissioned the survey said "When someone is asked for their own use they say around 40 minutes a week, but when asked about their colleagues they say they say up to an hour a day. We have used the lower of those figures rather than the high point,"
Surveys like this don't take into account that Twitter & Facebook could potentially help some people with their work.
What do you think? Are Twitter & Facebook productivity black holes?Apparently employees have admitted to wasting on average 40 minutes a week on Twitter... more

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Facebook as a clever guise; truly, the genius marketing ploy of the 21st century if not of all time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
facebook is as it would lead you to believe, "a social networking site," as we have seen this has potential to be really very misleading (http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/02/18/facebook.reversal/index.html). although, as well as allowing you to keep in touch with your friends, however, they collect information deemed valuable and sell it to third party companies which in turn proceed to advertise and solicit products to you, the individual–a target audience of one. whereas we would normally be organized into a few target audiences for corporations to pursue, instead facebook provides a platform for corporations to "pigeonhole" the individual into "niche markets" at the same time to maximize profit while reducing ad placement campaign failures losses and expenditures.
these arguments, including but not limited to the previous, are shallow and vacuous in light of what is really going on, i.e. the willingness in participation of individuals to voluntarily submit private information that can be recorded and stored for later use in favor of the interested parties. whether it be primarily third party small business groups and corporations or ultimately the government (as all of our average time spent and position of mouse clicks are also documented and can be viewed by D.A.R.P.A. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA) holding anything you say or do can be used against you in the court of law (see also: http://current.com/items/91135668_facebook-poke-leads-to-woman-s-arrest.htm) as well as digitally documenting a paper trail tied to your name local access point, address, mail, e-mail, phone number banking account and credit cards etc.
we've most definitely entered an age of accountability, where the individual is responsible for their transactions and/ or interactions as well as whatever else may transpire on the internet. where upon certain occasions it has caused certain individuals to lose their jobs or otherwise prevented them from getting one. pending the abolition of the net neutrality act(source available: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality), the internet is more or less a democratic medium in that it can either be used for or against the private individual whom so ever over indulges themselves in it.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------... more
