Fabio Capello called time on David Beckham's England career on live TV, apparently before the footballer was told.
When asked if Beckham would be part of the squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers, Capello answered:
"I say thank you very much for helping me at the World Cup but he is probably, little bit old."
After the interview, ITV cut back to the the studio where match pundit, former England striker Les Ferdinand, said: "I'm not sure if he's spoken to David already.
"I would hate to think he (Beckham) is seeing that and thinking, 'well that's the end of my England career'.
A spokesman for Beckham later said: "There has been no discussion of retirement. He will always be available for his country, when fit and, if needed, he will be there."
After the game, Capello said Beckham would get one more chance to play for his country.
"He will play one friendly to say bye bye," the Italian confirmed.
England went on to beat Hungary 2-1 after captain Steven Gerrard scored twice.

World Cup legends Brazil are going home earlier than expected after the Netherlands knocked them out of this year's tournament in a gripping 2-1 Quarter Final.
A goal from Robinho in the tenth minute had Brazil up by 1-0 at half time but in the second half, the reinvigorated Netherlands team took advantage of a Felipe Melo own girl in the 53rd minute to make it 2-1 with 68 minutes on the clock.
73 minutes into the game, a frustrated Melo was given the red card after appearing to stamp on Dutch winger Arjen Robben's leg. Brazil, down to ten men, looked surprisingly vulnerable compared to the superior Netherlands.

As South Africa hosts the 2010 World Cup, the focus is on many of the continent's brightest stars in soccer, including Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Inter Milan's Samuel Eto'o. In Football's Lost Boys, Current TV correspondent Mariana van Zeller explores the dark side to the sport's global popularity.
As more and more money flows into professional European football leagues, the demand for young West African players has skyrocketed -- and so has the number of unlicensed agents, illegitimate football academies, and shady middlemen looking to exploit these players. For a very small percentage of these West African youngsters, their dreams of playing professionally in Europe come true.
The rest face a litany of horrors: deadly Mediterranean crossings, broken promises, vanishing agents, brutal living conditions, and families torn apart. It's estimated that 20,000 young African players are now stranded in Europe. Many more never even make it that far and remain stuck in transit, in port towns across Africa.
Football's Lost Boys premieres Monday 12th July at 10pm on Current TV (Sky channel 183, Virgin media 155)

Jeremy Hunt the culture secretary has apologised saying in a statement "I know that fan unrest played no part in the terrible events of April 1989 and I apologise to Liverpool fans and the families of those killed and injured in the Hillsborough disaster if my comments caused any offence." after his previous comments sounded like he was saying hooliganism caused the tragic Hillsborough disaster. "He was quoted as saying that he was "incredibly encouraged by the example set by the England fans. I mean, not a single arrest for a football-related offense, and the terrible problems that we had in Heysel and Hillsborough in the Eighties seem now to be behind us".-Evening Standard
"A total of 96 fans died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster. After a public inquiry, new safety measures were introduced at football grounds around Britain. Some fans have said bad ticket allocation contributed to the disaster."-BBC

In Miami, two contestants face off to get points. The thief's job is to collect the food around the course and get it to the safety line. The food points are based on location and weight. The police contestant earns points by shooting paint balls at the thief behind the gun line. He has the option to run across the course and pick up the bat to beat the thief. The cop can make a tackle to earn his final points. This is considered an arrest. The thief has the opportunity to pick from two boxes. One box has a bag of cocaine in which the thief loses points, and the other is a donut receipt. The receipt makes the cop run back to the gun line and eat the donut. He can't leave until he finishes it. The thief must have been arrested in order to play and the cop must be some kind of law enforcement figure (security, cop, bail bonds, military, bouncer). Update: Isner's done it! The American clinches the set win on 70-68
A first-round match between France's Nicholas Mahut and America's John Isner, that started off normally, soon turned into a marathon, record-breaking 10-hour battle of wits and stamina; a game the International Tennis Federation has suggested is the longest official tennis match in history.
Both men, looking broken by the time play was stopped due to low light yesterday evening, laboured on throughout the day in the 5th set of their Wimbledon clash. The first four sets were standard enough - 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 - but it was the 5th that earnt them a standing ovation and several newspaper front pages today. At just after 9pm, when the weary, battleworn pair limped off court, the score stood at 59-59. They returned today at 3.30pm to play on until a win is eventually found. At time of writing, they're still drawing even.
"Nothing like this will every happen again, ever," said an exhausted Isner.
Mahut added: "We're fighting like we never have before. We'll come back tomorrow and see who is going to win this match. Everyone wants to see the end."
Brilliantly, whoever does win will go on to play Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands in the next round, who was involved in another lenghythy game with Santiago Giraldo. Though the score was 'only' 16-14, the pair played for four hours and six minutes.

When Nuzhat Gul says her work takes her on to male turf she means literal turf on golf courses. The only woman in all of India to manage the care and grooming of a golf course, she says other women should find openings in the country's boom in building golf courses.
Her father is a retired agrostologist, which means he studied grasses. And in her childhood she loved playing with boys.
Maybe that helps explain Nuzhat Gul's confidence as the first female turf manager of the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.
At 35, Gul is the first woman to look after the 18-hole golf course.
She holds this historic post for historic reasons. In 1999, as India and Pakistan started fighting on the hills of Kargil, some 200 kilometers from Srinagar, Western countries issued advisories to its citizens. The U.S. turf manager of Royal Springs duly left.
No other qualified turf professionals were available when the job came her way in 2002. She wound up taking what she describes as a job involving lots of physical labor.
"It is definitely not a white-collar job but a challenging 24-hour job,'" said Gul.
Some years back when she attended a course in turf management at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, she was the only woman in a class of 64. She stood apart for other reasons as well. "I was the only woman, from a rural background and a developing country," recalled the soft-spoken Gul.
For Gul it was a long way from her village in southern Kashmir, where women who venture beyond homemaking are in more typically female professions such as teaching.

By Max Leonard, le cool LondonWord on the street is there’s some sort of major sporting occasion starting imminently. Personally, I try not to form strong emotional attachments to England (I support Spurs, which takes up all the enthusiasm I can muster for habitually disappointing teams wearing white). So I’m going to take advantage of our metropolis – the most cosmopolitan in the world – and watch it with foreign fans instead. Here, in no particular order, are some picks:
1. Hard Rock Café 150 Old Park Lane, W1K 1QZ
My choice for England’s opening match. Like a Continental forward flinging himself to the turf under the faintest of touches, it may look as if I’m cheating, but, I figure that you have to watch England somewhere, and it may as well be in a US stronghold. Go, eat fries and burgers, and talk knowledgeably about ‘soccer’ while the Yanks attempt to win a game – something they failed to do in 2006.
2. Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix35-47 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6LA
Bethnal Green’s Rich Mix showed some pretty lively African Nations Cup games back in January, and hopefully the World Cup will see the same atmosphere. For 25 nights there’ll be bands from London’s African communities, DJs and football on a 10’x15’ screen.
3. Camino 3 Varnishers Yard, N1 9FD
Spain are a good bet to go all the way, and you won’t be disappointed if you pick this King’s Cross bar for the duration. BBC Radio 5 will be broadcasting live from Camino during Spain games, and £80 buys you a well-placed table, 12 beers and paella for four. There’ll also be a giant screen in the yard.
4. Bincho 16 Old Compton Street
This Japanese restaurant in Soho will be showing Japan’s matches on screens in the bar and, for every goal Japan score, they’ll be giving punters a free glass of warm sake. Back of the net.
5. Bar Italia 22 Frith Street, W1D 4RP
I thought about a lesser team for the final pick (step forward Slovenia, whose countrymen will be colonising The Colonies pub in St James for three games), but Bar Italia is an institution. It will be absolutely packed with London’s Italian community, and, if Italy make a good showing, emotions will run high as the tournament progresses.
Honourable mention number one goes to Wahaca. The upmarket Mexican will give free food to those wearing the Mexico shirt – and, if you stand on the terrace at their Canary Wharf restaurant, I’m reliably informed that giant public screens will be in full view. So eyes and stomachs both win.
And, finally, honourable mention number two goes to Jetlag. Still relatively new to Fitzrovia, it’s nevertheless already made a big impression. In the downstairs (departure?) lounge, you can relax on chaise longues, watch on an HD projector and choose from a dizzying array of World Cup-themed beer and street food, including Brazilian coxinhas, Greek souvlaki, Japanese Asahi and Kiwi Steinlager Pure. There’s a £25 minimum spend but, with their around-the-world-ticket cocktail package (4 for £25), that shouldn’t be difficult.
