The Senate Evisceration of Roe v. Wade: Hyde on Steroids

NOW (National Organization for Women) warns that the Senate will vote on an amendment similar to Stupak-Pitts that would prevent millions of women from obtaining insurance coverage for abortion under their version of health care reform, S1796. Is that the bill number or the year they intend to regress to?

This comes on the heals of the passed house Stupak-Pitts, anti-abortion amendment and the more recent mammogram media blitz tactic that blamed the White House for an independent private sector task force recommendation. Reportedly, Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) and Bob Casey (R-Penn.) may offer a version of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment to be attached to the Senate bill. That means, in all likelihood, if the Senate adopts this harmful amendment, it will remain in the final Senate-House conference bill and become law. Alternatively, a modified variation of Stupak-Pitts could be incorporated into the bill. Either way, millions of women lose -- big time.

Please Take Action NOW!

The Stupak-Pitts amendment explained:

* The ban on abortion coverage in insurance would apply to both the proposed public option and to private health insurance plans sold in the new regional health insurance exchanges. It is estimated that some 36 million uninsured persons would be purchasing insurance policies through new exchanges and would be eligible for federal affordability subsidies.
* Health insurers may not sell plans that cover abortion to customers who are paying without a subsidy, if even just one person who is receiving the federal affordability credits (the subsidy) were to purchase a plan. In other words, even if you are paying 100 percent of your insurance costs, abortion coverage would not be available in your plan if anyone with affordability credits joins the same plan.
* Women may purchase a separate abortion "rider" for coverage, though many doubt that these riders would be offered by the insurance companies.
* Small companies (fewer than 100 employees) would also likely purchase health insurance through the exchange, but if any of their employees received affordability credits no abortion coverage could be included.
* Eighty-seven percent of employer-based insurance plans now cover abortion services, but if employers withdraw coverage and send their employees to the health insurance exchanges, those employees would likely lose abortion coverage under these new prohibitions.

There may be a modified version of this harmful amendment that is included in the Senate health care reform bill that will be debated next week. We want to make sure that Stupak-Pitts language is not used and that no variation of this harmful amendment is passed. Please send a message to your senators that you oppose any restrictions on insurance coverage of abortion. Thank you for all the work you do for women's rights.

'Hit The Bitch' Anti-Violence PSA Stirs Controversy

The intentions behind it may have been noble, but a Danish public service announcement about violence against women called "Hit The Bitch" has people asking just what those behind it were thinking.

Made by a Danish advocacy group as a web campaign (www.hitthebitch.dk), the site allows you to use your computer's mouse to move a gigantic hand so that it repeatedly strikes a female model in the face. The site then rates each hit on a scale beginning at "100% pussy" and ending at "100% gangsta." As you hit the woman her face begins to show bruises, and once enough blows are struck and the user reaches "100% gangsta," the woman falls down and the phrase "100% IDIOT!" appears on the screen. It then shows her sobbing and grabbing her neck in agony on the floor. The spot's message about violence is then presented in Danish while mournful music plays in the background.

The response from the handful of sites that have written about the PSA has been one of discomfort. The PSA "takes things to a a disturbing level," writes Nick McMaster at Newser. Meanwhile, Tana Ganeva of Alternet has accused the PSA of having gone "very, very wrong":

Seriously though, this seems like the end result of some people sitting around a table trying to figure out how to make domestic violence edgy and attention-grabbing. Are we really so inured to the standard imagery of wide-eyed kids cowering in the background, or the bruised faces of women?
Ganeva isn't totally dismissive of the PSA, however, and concludes her article by suggesting that since domestic violence is rarely discussed in the mainstream media, the makers of the spot may be on to something in their approach: "even though it's pretty fucking tone deaf and horrifying, are they on the right track by trying to be aggressively controversial?"

The confusion that the PSA causes for the user -- is this raising awareness to the severity of the problem, or is it unintentionally trivializing the issue -- was captured by Tim Nudd at Adweek: "Perhaps you're supposed to feel guilty, like a real-life abuser might, for continuing to hit the woman just to see what happens next? Who knows. Maybe something's getting lost in translation from the Danish," Nudd writes.

Perhaps the best way to decide is to visit the site and experience it for yourself, should you feel it's not too unpleasant to do so.

PeaceKeeper Campaign Asks Celebrity Make-Up Artist to Help Fight Violence Against Women

PeaceKeeper’s campaign, “Make-Up Artists For Peace” asked some of the countries leading celebrity make-up artists to donate their favorite make-up tip in support of PeaceKeeper’s work to end violence against women. Recently, we asked Sam Fine, celebrity make-up artist for women like Tyra Banks, Brandy, Aretha Franklin, Halle Berry, Alek Wek, Naomi Campbell, Destiny’s Child, and more. Here is what he suggests:

Use foundation to achieve a second skin appearance
After applying foundation (either liquid or cream), take a facial tissue and separate each layer. Using one layer, gently blot, removing any excess oil. What you're left with is skin that looks perfect without the mask-like appearance of foundation.

Use two foundation formulas – liquid and crème – to achieve a flawless complexion
Using liquid foundation and tinted moisturizer is great, but they don't have the ability to cover dark marks or heavy discoloration. Fine suggests using a stick foundation along with your existing foundation in select areas where more coverage is needed. Now you'll be able to hide blemishes without feeling like you're wearing a face full of foundation!

Build beautiful lashes
Begin by wiping the excess off the wand/brush and applying a thin coat of waterproof mascara. Go on to do something else - get dressed or make a cup of coffee. Because waterproof mascara dries quicker, when you return to apply your second coat, you'll notice each lash stands out and attracts mascara like never before!

Create the perfect brow
Fine suggests using two pencils to create the perfect brow; one in a shade lighter than the natural brow color and one a bit darker than the natural brow color. First, using the lighter pencil to softly define and fill, serving as a guideline for shape, then return with the darker pencil to deepen the color and define the shape. This helps to insure that you'll have a beautiful brow that doesn't look drawn on or fake.
