hanks to some careful planning and loving thoughtfulness from fiancé Benjamin Millepied, Natalie Portman’s engagement ring embodies much of the same eco-friendliness by which the Oscar-nominated actress lives her life.
Created by jewelry designer Jamie Wolf, Portman’s custom-designed ring is made of recycled platinum and its diamonds are certified as conflict-free, reports People.
“Ben was exceptionally thoughtful and dedicated and patient to make sure we had everything right,” Wolf told InStyle. “We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie.”
Active in environmental causes since she was a child, Portman is also a strict vegan.
Earlier this week, she was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her turn as a psychologically traumatized ballerina in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. She met Millepied, a dance choreographer, on the set of the film.

Wolf, whose ring-work includes Anne Hathaway and Julia Roberts as clients, is a former dancer for the New York City ballet and a longtime friend of Millipied’s.
Stylist estimates the value of Portman’s ring to be $35,000.
Ashley Mendel Fox, a designer and vintage gem expert in New York City, told Stylist that the ring reflects a trend of “placing antique stones in modern settings for a couple's romantic version of something old for their wedding day.”hanks to some careful planning and loving thoughtfulness from fiancé Benjamin... more

Eco fabrics and brands have been hanging around in the fashion world for a couple of years, but critics waived it off as a fad from the jump. I wonder if those critics are the same people that called Hip-Hop a fad in the '80s? But I digress...anyway, brands like Diesel, Burberry, H&M, and Christian Dior attended the Interstoff Asia Essential exhibition last week in Hong Kong to learn more about "eco fabrics, safe dyeing processes, and good working conditions"Eco fabrics and brands have been hanging around in the fashion world for a couple of... more

The weather and climate have a profound influence on our lives everywhere. Lives and livelihoods are disrupted in the path of storms and rising sea levels, retreating glaciers, intensifying droughts and floods, and food and water scarcity.
The Health and Climate Foundation has put together a contemporary art project that explores that relationship between climate and society.
Coinciding with the World Climate Conference 3 in Geneva, which runs from 31 August—4 September 2009, the exhibition is intended to provoke us to think about how we are affected by the environment, how it transforms us, and how we live with it.The weather and climate have a profound influence on our lives everywhere. Thermal images taken of some of the UK and Europe's famous buildings show that many of them are less than eco-friendly.
The Houses of Parliament lose more heat than Buckingham Palace, the Reichstag, Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly, costing taxpayers £7,191 a year in wasted energy.
The Welsh Assembly leaks just £95.98 a year, Buckingham Palace loses £1,038, the Reichstag loses £599.25 and the Scottish Parliament leaks £463.40.
The least green landmark was Manchester Piccadilly, which loses £18,217.Thermal images taken of some of the UK and Europe's famous buildings show that... more

This nifty "green" patented invention hopes to be the alternative and eco friendly option when we're gobbing down greasy dough pies.
There's seems like a lot of room for college students to take some on campus action here...

The Ferry Dock at Road Town Tortola was a buzz of activities this morning when the world’s fastest eco-boat, Earthrace arrived for a day’s visit.
Earthrace, which runs on 100% biodiesel, is the first boat in the world to use hemp composite. This is visible on the floor of the helm. Hemp is renewable, unlike carbon and Kevlar, and is strong and versatile enough for medium impact protection.
Earthrace has smashed the world speed record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, completing the journey in 60 days, 23 hours 49 mins, and knocking almost 14 days off the previous record.

Pupils at a Scottish school have decided to take the controversial issue of plastic carrier bag usage into their own hands by banning them from their school.
The youngsters have even begun to design and produce their own eco-friendly bags, meaning there is now no excuse for pupils to bring in plastic bags.
The children were inspired to take action after reading a newspaper story about a whale which had washed up on the shore of the Isle of Mull, and was discovered to have ingested 23 plastic carrier bags. They were so appalled by what had happened that they were spurred into action.Pupils at a Scottish school have decided to take the controversial issue of plastic... more

Vintage fabric as eco-friendly fashion
Retro purses made from vintage car upholstery fabric are cool and green!
Asha Blake, KTLA News
Kim White found a way to make some green by sewing green; use vintage car upholstery fabric that was just sitting in a warehouse. White bought the entire warehouse, which was full of unused fabric from the 70's and 80's. What was made to sit on years ago now fits neatly under your arm...as a handbag. KTLA's Asha Blake reports.

'Most buildings are designed to shed rain, and as such are built with hard, impenetrable roofing surfaces. As a result, rainwater bounces off and collects as runoff, picking up impurities—including infectious bacteria from animal waste as well as harmful pesticides and fertilizers—on the way to municipal storm sewers, which in turn eventually empty out into local bodies of water.
Minimizing this run-off means that more impurities will remain in local soils where they can be broken down more easily into their constituent elements than if they are concentrated downstream. In order to achieve this goal, landscape architects have developed so-called “green roofs,” which utilize living plant matter and soil on top of a building in order to absorb, collect and reuse rainwater while preventing run-off. Many buildings employing green roofs are able to find abundant uses for the water they collect, from watering exterior plantings at ground level to flushing toilets inside.'
How cool would it be if major cities, like NY, Boston, London, had gardens on all the rooftops? Think about all of the benefits from environmental, to fresh produce being available at food pantries. Work release programs could maintain the gardens, not to mention the therapeutic effect gardening has on the soul!'Most buildings are designed to shed rain, and as such are built with hard,... more
