The highway from percocet to heroin.
Hardly anyone starts getting high with the intention of becoming a full-blown heroin addict. The chicken-versus-egg approach of blaming marijuana as “the gateway drug” could ramble on forever, as could defining alcohol and nicotine as “drugs”. http://wp.me/p1RkpB-1The highway from percocet to heroin.

The two week protest at the White House was put on hold today because of Hurricane Irene and the clean up effort. Actually, Irene's presence at this very historical time for the climate justice movement is one more indication of why President Obama must say NO to the Keystone XL pipeline. The State Dept's recent report which reeks of corporate influence and lobbying only reiterates the perseverence we all must have now in fighting this continuation of an addiction that is killing us.
No report by the State Dept. can hide the reality of what we now see taking place around the globe due to human influence. The only way we the people will secure a sustainable healthy future for our children and theirs is to keep fighting this fight because it is right.
President Obama, you still have the final say. Do you vote to go forward which signifies clean energy, clean water and moral courage? Or do you vote with the status quo which signifies pollution, tipping points and climate catastrophe?
This is the fourth post I am making in solidarity with those who risk arrest in Washington DC in standing up for all that is positive about our future. We need to do this now.
Please join me in supporting those who are speaking for us and those species that cannot speak for themselves.

It's day 3 of the two week sit-in which will be the beginning of the movement of the people to stop this senseless destructive path we are on as a species. This is about more than a long piece of metal winding its way through our country. This is about the global repercussions of continuing to be addicted to that which is killing us and the ecosystems that sustain life on this planet.
And while I too know that to go "cold turkey" would be just as much a catastrophe, we must now work together to make those in government understand that to continue on this path without adequate transition is even more catastrophic. But yes, I know the score and the odds just as those sitting in Washington DC do. However, this is about the survival of civilization as we know it and that is simply the reality of it all. This is a moral imperative.
The link to the thread above was the first post in what I hope will be a series over the next two weeks to virtually protest this unnecessary pipeline and to stand in solidarity with those who risk arrest in trying to make President Obama understand that a YES to this will also affect the world his children will live in.
So once again, please use this thread to comment NO, or any other encouragement you wish to convey to those sitting in to stand up for us that we are with them in spirit.
If you truly love your planet and wish to preserve it, this is the time to make it known.
They want it all but they won't get it without a fight! It's day 3 of the two week sit-in which will be the beginning of the movement of... more

http://www.alternet.org/drugs/152102/a_radical_new_definition_of_addiction_creates_a_big_storm/
This article from The Fix (Jennifer Matesa and Jed Bickman report on the new definition of addiction from the American Society of Addiction Medicine via Alternet tells of this powerful lobby's new view of addiction. According to the lobby addicts can't stop being addicts. This is a blanket statement of devestating consequences to those struggling with substance and behaviorial abuse and those who treat them. Why the ASAM would also claim addiction is a "disease" when it is not, and then in the same breath claim it is in essence brain damage, but "there is no need to scan the brain to determine if a person is an addict" is to put it bluntly, insane and dangerous. The book Sick Like U.S., lays out how the pharma. and their lobby in colllusion with psychiatric groups and research funded by them, push disorders and diseases in order to push the same pills that cause the very addictive pills they push, like oxycotin. There are now pills for asthma that are addictive and you cannot go off cold turkey without severe side effects. The more dangerous statement of "addicts can't not be addicts" only chases people away from treatment of anykind. These kinds of statements belay the fact that each person is an individual, unique and that there is always a way to change self destructive behaviors and heal. Many in the field of therapy will tell you of miraculous events of change and transformation that no one outside the individual thought possible. These kinds of edicts from those who seek to make gross profits from the suffering of others only chase people away from even the most benign forms of help that often do serious good. The comments are interesting. When the ASAM is willing to recognize greed, and the need for power as addiction perhaps then we can listen to them. When they begin to put their power towards better access, mental health parity, and dollars for on the ground counselors, one on one than we can listen. Trust is key in therapy, this organization stands in the way.http://www.alternet.org/drugs/152102/a_radical_new_definition_of_addiction_creates_a_bi... more

We're taking a look at some of the most popular stories from the Current community, and we've rounded up some highlights to share. Check them out and add your two cents:
9/11 First Responders Not Invited to 10th Anniversary Memorial CeremonySubmitted by EthicalVegan
The first responders will always remember risking their lives on that painful September 11th. However, these brave men and women were not invited to this year's commemoration ceremony. Mayor Bloomberg's office said given the space constraints, the memorial is more accommodating to the victims' families.
"John Feal, founder of an advocacy group for the police officers, firefighters, civilian volunteers and others who worked at ground zero, assailed the response, saying Bloomberg "lives in his own world."
"The best of the best that this country offered 10 years ago are being neglected and denied their rightful place," Feal said.
Denise Villamia, a first responder who worked at ground zero for several months, cried over the phone as she recalled her "totally heartbroken" reaction to the news that she could not attend the memorial service.
"I'm crying because it's really a big betrayal on the part of the city, to rob me from my way to pay homage and to find that comfort and healing," she said. "I feel that I have been robbed of my way to pay tribute."
Here's a few opinions from our community on the anniversary ceremony:
demsbeans527: "Wait aren't the first responders victims as well? If I recall, many of them lost colleagues when those towers came down, on the very same anniversary date."
Lairderg: "Invite them; let everyone see what some people are willing to do for their fellow human beings. We have a distorted idea of heroes sometimes, especially when people idolize the rich for doing nothing but having a lot of gold junk, and having these brave people there would cause us to pause and rework our ideas about who's really important. Clue: those who help, not those who step on everybody to get to the top."
QuietPlease: "Then MAKE room. Let a few politicians and other 'dignitaries' watch it on tv. I can't imagine a harder slap in the face to people who had selflessly put themselves in harm's way."
Addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling is a brain diseaseSubmitted by Vierotchka
According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, addiction to gambling, sex, alcohol, drugs are clearly not just a behavorial problem, but a chronic disease of the brain.
“The disease is about brains, not drugs. It’s about underlying neurology, not outward actions,” said Michael Miller, past president of the ASAM who oversaw the crafting of the society’s new definition, in a statement.
“This is the first time ASAM has taken an official position that addiction is not solely related to problematic substance use,” a statement from the society notes."
The association’s new definition of addiction can be read in its entirety at the ASAM website.
Walmart warns on US weaknessSubmitted by KB723
The struggling US economy continues to put strain on Walmart’s domestic sales. The biggest retail company stated its customers are becoming more dependent on government assistance.
"We remain concerned about the economic pressure on our customers and the uncertain impact it can have on their shopping behaviour,” Bill Simon, chief executive of Walmart’s US business, said. “With this volatility, it is as important as ever to deliver on Walmart’s one-stop shopping promise for broad assortment and every day low prices.”
The community strongly voiced their thoughts on the Walmart business model:
dugdog47: "Nice to hear walmart is losing money. The have been shipping jobs out of the country for years. Funny how they blame the economy, when they are partly to blame for our hard times. I won't even let my tires touch a walmart parking lot, much less shop there. BOYCOTT WALMART AMERICAN THEY ARE AMERICAN TRAITORS."
gypsysailor: "Well I've got a warning back for WalMart. Stop your sleezy business practices by running out the competition, jacking your prices after they leave and removing brand choices and subsituting 'Great Value' brands and maybe your sales will increase. Oh yeah, just a note about history. Montgomery Ward went of business because of a lack of customer service. You are headed that way too."
attilatheblond: "The irony of a corporation that pays so little that many employees have to rely on government programs it has been said they help employees learn to file for such help) whining about the lower income people not shopping is pretty damned amazing. Sam's kids can't connect dots I reckon."

Addiction is “not simply a behavioral problem involving too much alcohol, drugs, gambling or sex,” the American Society of Addiction Medicine declared this week. Instead, the society notes, “Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.”
In other words, addiction is not just about the actof raising a bottle to the lips, drawing deeply on a cigarette or bingeing guiltily in chocolate bars in private. There just might be something amiss in your head that compels you to behave that way.
“The disease is about brains, not drugs. It’s about underlying neurology, not outward actions,” said Michael Miller, past president of the ASAM who oversaw the crafting of the society’s new definition, in a statement.

Tanning releases opiods, the same addictive chemicals in morphine and heroin. Frequent tanners experience withdrawl when they don't get these opiods, just like drug users!
Most tanners report mood enhancement, relaxation and socialization while soaking up the sun. But tanorexics become very competitive about tanning, and may actually hate their skin and view it as untolerably pale, in the same way anorexics view themselves as hatefully fat even when they're starving. Tanorexics experience the most serious withdrawl symptoms, which include intense anxiety, nausea, and jitters. Since UV light from the sun and tanning beds creates a feeling of euphoria in the brain, it's also likely tanners feel depressed when they are removed from their lights for too long.
Since any tan at all is evidence of sun damage, and tanners continue to ignore medical risks, this has led many dermatologists to push that UV light tanning addiction be recognized as a substance abuse disorder. And just like any substance abuse order, we already have celebrity posterchildren. Wikipedia says "notable figures known to have suffered from tanorexia are Christine Swanson, Jordan Cohen, the British celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal and the cast of the MTV reality show Jersey Shore."

Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller investigates the story behind the dramatic spike in drug abuse over the course of the last decade and along the way uncovers a disturbing new trend: an alarming escalation among addicts from prescription drugs to heroin, a cheaper and more potent alternative to OxyContin that's all too readily available on the streets.
