The British government's tough spending cuts will push 600,000 more children into “absolute poverty,” peaking at 3.1 million by 2013, Institute for Fiscal Studies has warned.
IFS, Britain's chief public finance think-tank, revealed that in 2010, 2.5 million children and 2.1 million working-age parents were living in absolute poverty, warning more people would find themselves in poverty in the next two years.
By 2013, 3.1 million children together with 2.5 million working-age parents and four million adults with no children would live in absolute poverty, IFS predicted.
The report, which was funded by Joseph Rowntree Foundation, also forecasted that by 2020 child poverty would be record high.
"Absolute and relative child poverty are forecast to be 23% and 24% in 2020-21 respectively. These compare with the targets of 5% and 10%, set out in the Child Poverty Act (2010).
"This would be the highest rate of absolute child poverty since 2001/02 and the highest rate of relative child poverty since 1999/2000," IFS report read.
Furthermore, the think-tank also reported that by 2013, the "squeezed middle" with middle incomes would fall by 7%, which would be “the largest three-year fall in median income since 1974-77.”
Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group, accused the coalition ministers of being in denial, as their legacy threatens to be the worst poverty record of any government for a generation.
"They risk damaging childhoods and children's life chances, as well as our national economic wellbeing from wasted potential and social costs spiral. It would be a catastrophic failure in public policy and political leadership," Garnham said.
Liam Bryne, Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, said, "David Cameron promised us he would not increase child poverty. Now we have the truth. The Tory-led Government's decision to cut too far and too fast this year will condemn hundreds of thousands more children to grow up poor."
Universities Minister David Willetts blamed the former government for the country's economic crisis, insisting Britain is not as well as we thought.
"We have tried to do the things that help, but you can't ignore the basic rules of economics that when you inherit a situation where the economy has shrunk by 7% there isn't the money there."The British government's tough spending cuts will push 600,000 more children into... more

The number of jobless in Britain increased by 114,000 people to 2.57 million between June and August, setting an 8.1 percent rate increase or a 17-year high record.
The figures published by the Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of unemployed British youths between 16 and 24 years of old also reached a record high of 991,000, a rate of 21.3 percent.
Meanwhile, the total jobless figures for 16 and 17-year-olds rose by 3,000 to 205,000, and long-term job losses increased by 60,000 to 867,000.
The ONS figures also showed that the rate of people who lost jobs and claiming benefits increased by 17,500 to reach 1.6 million, which is the highest level since 2010.
Brendan Barber, the general secretary of Trade Union Congress (TUC), condemned the coalition government's economic strategies.
"These are terrible figures. The government's austerity measures have turned unemployment into a full-blown crisis - with job losses not seen since the darkest days of the recession”, Barber said.
"Worryingly, this is not simply the result of eurozone troubles. This unemployment crisis is state-sponsored and areas like the North East are paying a heavy price, with over one in 10 people out of work."
Financial experts stressed that ONS report proved Britain has been dealing with a crippling economy.
Howard Archer, IHS Global Insight's top economist, said that there would be no getting away from the disappointing set of labour market data.
"It is evident that persistent economic weakness, lower business confidence and mounting public sector job cuts are combining to take an increasing toll on jobs. Meanwhile, ongoing muted wage growth is maintaining the serious squeeze on consumers' purchasing power," he added.
John Salt, director of jobsite Totaljobs, declared that women were badly hit by the country's economic downturn, and that “with deficit reduction priority number one, we can expect further public sector job cuts, which affect women disproportionately.”The number of jobless in Britain increased by 114,000 people to 2.57 million between... more

Exclusive: The army's top lawyer during the Iraq war tells Channel 4 News his superiors blocked him when he tried to make British forces treat prisoners in a lawful way, writes Callum Macrae.
Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty describes him as "a human rights hero and a military hero as well. A man of principle and a credit to both the legal profession and the corps of officers in the British Army."
One imagines that Lt Col Nicholas Mercer's former superiors in the Ministry of Defence might choose different words.
Lt Col Mercer was the commander legal of the British land forces that invaded Iraq at the start of the war in 2003. He was, in other words, the army's top lawyer in Iraq. A successful and well-regarded career officer, it was his job to make sure British troops stayed within the law.
But Lt Col Mercer's efforts to do that job were to cost him his dear. And in an exclusive interview with Channel 4 News he describes how he was blocked, harassed and mocked by his superiors in the MoD as he tried to make sure British forces treated prisoners in a lawful and humane way.
When he said hooding of prisoners was unlawful and must stop, he was told it was a legitimate part of "UK doctrine". But it turned out he was right.
When he said that prisoners were entitled to protection under the European Convention of Human Rights, the MoD said he was wrong. They stopped him from raising his concerns and refused to implement procedures he proposed. But again it has turned out he was right and the MoD was wrong in law.

A failed asylum seeker fell from the seventh floor of a Nottingham tower block after being taunted by a crowd of people, an inquest has heard.
Osman Rasul Mohammed, 27, an Iraqi Kurd, had been in Britain for almost 10 years when an application to stay in the country was rejected.
The inquest in Nottingham heard he climbed on to the railing of a balcony in a distressed state in 2010.
Coroner Maureen Casey said a "baying" crowd below called on him to jump.
The inquest heard Mr Mohammed died at Clifford Court in Radford on 25 July last year after he became very distressed about his immigration status.
'Horrific scene'
Mr Mohammed had originally applied for political asylum but that failed because he could not prove he had a legal right to stay.
His second attempt to stay was based on his children, who have British citizenship, but this also failed.
Friends said that in the weeks before his death he had tried to discuss his case with immigration officials. He had also heard his legal funding was going to be cut.
The inquest at Nottingham's Council House heard Mr Mohammed had cannabis in his system and appeared to be praying while on the balcony.
A neighbour and police spent more than two hours trying to persuade him to get help but he suddenly fell as taunts were shouted from below.
The Nottingham coroner said it was "an horrific scene with a crowd baying for the vulnerable man to jump".
Miss Casey said she could not record a verdict of suicide because it could not be proven he had jumped to his death.
But she said the issues over his legal status were not for the inquest hearing.
She recorded an open verdict.

A man who was stabbed after standing up to a gang abusing a pregnant woman and a pensioner on a bus in east London said he would "do it again".
Tim Smits, 32, was stabbed in the stomach and leg and punched when he went to the aid of the two women on the number 488 bus on Wednesday morning.
The Australian graphic designer said he was "shocked" at being attacked but added: "I don't regret what I did".
Police said three suspects ran off after the attack in Parnell Road.
The victim was attacked on a bus travelling between Dalston and Bromley-by-Bow just before 11:00 BST after remonstrating with two men and a woman, police said.
The suspects, aged between 16 and 20, got off the bus through the emergency exit and ran away.
Mr Smits, who moved to London 18 months ago, said: "They were harassing a few people onboard the bus.
"I sort of drew the line when they decided to start picking on some elderly women with their shopping trolleys.
"I pulled these guys up on their manners and said 'what's going on... would you speak to your grandmother like that'.
"The response was 'who you talking to, who you talking to, shut up shut up, I'll spit in your face'."
Mr Smits said he decided to confront them verbally and not to leave his seat but one of the suspects came over and stood over him.
"Then he threatened my life and I said 'really? in front of all those witnesses on the bus in the broad daylight you want to do that with witnesses'.
"That's when he really scared me by saying 'I don't care - I'll mess you up in front of all these people'."
Mr Smits said he was hit in the head several times before he managed to pin his attacker's arms for a few seconds.
He said the attacker's friend grabbed him from behind and he was stabbed in the stomach and then his leg.
'Incredibly proud'
Mr Smits, who is now recovering at home, said he wished the bus driver "had done more".
He said his family was "incredibly proud" of him.
"I don't regret what I did. I would do it again definitely," he added.
Police said the first suspect was a black man, about 6ft (1.83m) tall, skinny and had the front of his hair sticking up and the back in plaits.
The second male suspect was white, about 5ft 10in (1.78m) tall, stocky and was wearing a red T-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms and beanie hat.
The woman suspect, who was also white, was about 5ft 3in (1.6m) tall, was wearing white leggings and had dark-brown long curly hair and black rimmed glasses.A man who was stabbed after standing up to a gang abusing a pregnant woman and a... more

GM Freeze today described Defra's decision to approve a GM wheat trial at Rothamsted Research as "a big mistake and premature".
The consent [1], issued today, includes provision to prevent the GM wheat crossing with couch grass and to stop wood pigeon feeding on the crop.
The group opposed the application during a public consultation in the summer including [2]:
*The lack of market for GM wheat anywhere on the planet means it is a waste of time and money (some GBP1.28 million).
*Serious doubts about whether the GM wheat will work as stated.
*Lack of any data on potential health effects.
*Presence of an antibiotic resistant marker gene against European Medicines Agency advice.
*Risk of cross-contamination with other wheat crops and some grasses already problematic as arable weeds.
*Unknown impacts on predator and parasites populations, which already provide some control for aphid infestations.
*Unknown impacts on bird species, which feed on aphids as part of their diet.
*The potential for development of aphids desensitised to the alarm chemical after being continually subjected to the GM deterrent over time so that they do not respond to it when it is constantly produced by the wheat plants 24 hours a day 7 days per week.
GM Freeze asked Ministers to hold a public consultation on the use of synthetic animal genes in GM crops, as one of the key genes in the GM wheat "has most similarity to that from cow (Bos taurus)" according to the applicant.
Commenting Pete Riley of GM Freeze said
"It is clear from the authorisation letter that the Government's scientific advisors have concerns about the possibility of the GM wheat crossing with couch grass, a major arable weed, which could cause long-term problems for farmers if this wheat was ever grown on a commercial scale.
"There are also concerns about wild birds carrying the GM seeds off site, but there is no provision to deal with small birds, such a sparrows, or small mammals doing this.
"The key question Ministers need to answer is why they are funding research into GM wheat for which there is no market in the UK, Europe or anywhere else when other areas of proven, less risky agricultural research, such as agroecology, are crying out for additional funds.
The decision to approve an open-air trial of GM wheat is a big mistake and premature given the serious lack of information in the application. [3] We need to know far more about the alarm chemicals involved and the formation of wheat-couch grass crosses before we start genetically modifying a staple crop."

The world's largest sperm bank has started turning down redheaded donors because there is too little demand for their sperm.
Ole Schou, Cryos's director, said that there had been a surge in donations in recent years, allowing the facility to become much more picky about its donors.
"There are too many redheads in relation to demand," he told told Danish newspaper Ekstrabladet. "I do not think you chose a redhead, unless the partner - for example, the sterile male - has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads.
And that's perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case."
Mr Schou said the only reliable demand for sperm from redheaded donors from Ireland, where he said it sold “like hot cakes”.

The announcement is likely to occur at the Liberal Democrat conference tomorrow.
The government began surveying opinion on the issue earlier this year and was due to take some action this summer.
However, the issue was curbed, with the government saying it would delay on making a commitment to same sex marriage until the fall.
It now appears that legislation will be brought in to secure marriage equality for all couples. Gay marriage is effectively legal in the UK, but under the label of "civil partnership" and not "marriage."
