“I believe in Jus Animalium, the rights of beasts, and Jus Herbarum, the rights of plants.
The right to exist as they have always existed, to live and let live.”
- John Aspinall, referring to historical 19th century animal rights activism
Jus Animalium Culture Apparel (JACA) is an apparel line with a purpose. It was created to help animal shelters care for those millions of unwanted and homeless pets that enter their doors every year, and to send a message reminding you to have respect and care for your companion animals.
Every month or so, JACA chooses one shelter to donate 5% of their sales to - this month it’s Cat Care Society – and holds a second promotion for another shelter. (In January, JACA is donating $5 from every sale of their American Pit Bull tee to Midwest Rescue, which fosters, trains and adopts out dogs, as well as works to destroy anti-pit myths.) They’re hoping to up their donation amounts as their sales increase…they’ve just started out!

When I was a kid, I always wanted a cool nickname. In fact, I was one of those kids that tried to force a nickname out of desperation…until I realized that was dumb and, luckily, stopped before anyone made fun of me for it. (Thank God.) So, my entire life, I’ve been either Jennifer, Jenny or Jen. I’m still either Jennifer (work), Jenny (family) or Jen (friends) everywhere I go.
But at least I get three names out of my given one. Black, I’m noticing, gets nothing but itself.

Every year LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School holds a canned food drive around the holidays to benefit those facing a tough holiday season.
This year’s canned food drive happens to be today, with our city streets filled with snow, several more cm continuing to fall, with city crews out trying to clear the existing snow from the roads, and with the sidewalks and walkways still icy and bumpy in many neighborhood homes! I’ll be driving some of the kids around and it’ll be interesting to see them fight the elements in their quest to collect food for the needy.
The plan is to get as many volunteers as possible to chauffeur the LaSalle High students from door-to-door in the neighborhood to collect non-perishable food items. They then bring everything back to the school gym and an “all-hands on deck” sorting of the collected goods takes place.
Neighbors know what to expect. The kids do this every year. And a few weeks ago, as always, the LaSalle High students mailed out flyers to everyone in the borough to advise them of the date and time they could expect a ring at the door by smiling students eagerly anticipating donations!
I’ll be tweeting about what I see tonight, so follow me @VigilantFutures!
Visit the LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School website and learn about their events: http://lcchs.lbpsb.qc.ca/

This year I’m going to buy at least one person clothing for Christmas (or whichever holiday they happen to celebrate). To keep myself from going crazy, I created a little list of guidelines I should follow – guidelines that will make it easier for me to determine what to buy, and how it might be received by the lucky giftee. And because I think everyone should take a chance on a brave, scary, awesome gift, I’m sharing that list with you.

Here is my hypothesis: We are in a transition. The eco-fashion industry was only created a few years ago, max. Before that – there were designers who happened to engage in fair trade and/or sustainable fabrics… Now, there is an industry surrounding these designers.
Here is my fear: There will be some kind of fast-eco-fashion movement. Why would that be bad? It sounds like a good thing, right? Well consider this...

People don’t understand how I can buy clothing online. How does one determine how something will fit, or feel, or look if they haven’t tried it on in a poorly-lit dressing room with three of their closest friends ready to scrutinize it as they prance around barefoot?
I find buying clothing online easier, actually, than buying in a standard store. In fact, I have a feeling that most women would prefer it, too, if there wasn’t a stigma against it. So I’m going to attempt to convert some of you with my awesome online-buying logic.

This environmental bag by Green Woven Earth is fantastic because of several things. The first reason is because it's made out of a type of grass called buri, which is a palm grass coming from the Philippines that's extremely strong and durable. It was being used well before World War II for bags, mats and hats. After loom weaving was invented in the 70's, buri (also known as butan). Buri is mostly common in Asian countries. Secondly, since this bag is natural, it's made out of a sustainable source that's 100% biodegradable and will decompose when disposed of.
These are reusable eco-friendly bags that can be used anywhere, from going out with your friends to going for a picnic, doing your groceries, going to the gym, to the beach and even to the farmers' market. The tote bags are so strong that they will last a long time.
Green Woven Earth has several different styles, sizes and colors for all tastes (natural color, pink, blue, green and any mix of these), make sure to get at least one reusable bag because we've managed to get a coupon code and pass the discount to you! "Children's clothing store Gymboree has lots of cute Halloween costumes for sale this week, but the cotton in those costumes may be harvested under conditions worthy of a horror movie.
Almost 2,000 Change.org readers have already taken action to tell Gymboree and Abercrombie & Fitch to join the many other major clothing companies that have spoken out against the widespread forced labor of children in Uzbekistan's cotton industry. Abercombie & Fitch has since responded stating they have a policy not to source cotton from Uzbekistan because of these egregious human rights abuses.
But Gymboree remains scarily unmoved.
Even as many of you joined a national call-in day to Gymboree two weeks ago, the company remained silent on this critical issue. Many of you have also used Twitter to spread the word and communicated your concern on Gymboree's Facebook page.
Recently, the International Labor Rights Forum posted photographs of children working in Uzbekistan's cotton fields during the current cotton harvest on Gymboree's Facebook wall, so that the company could actually see some of the faces of the millions of children forced to leave school and work in the fields. Unfortunately, Gymboree swiftly removed the photographs and swept the reality faced by these children under the rug, while continuing its silence on the abuse. The photograph featured in this post is among those removed by Gymboree, and you can view more of them online here: http://laborrightsblog.typepad.com/international_labor_right/2010/10/the-photographs-gymboree-doesnt-want-you-to-see.html "

A seaside city in Italy is planning to ban miniskirts and other revealing clothing to improve what the mayor calls standards of public decency.
Castellammare di Stabia is trying to be the latest location in Italy to make use of new powers to crack down on what is deemed to be anti-social behaviour.
Mayor Luigi Bobbio said the regulations would help "restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil co-existence".
Offenders would face fines of between 25 ($35) and 500 euros ($696).
You know, the only time I have a problem with mini skirts or hot pants is when they are worn by anyone under the age of 18, maybe an age limit might be more moral and helpful than an all out ban.
what do you think?

More info and 25% off coupon code here: http://www.ecobold.com/tie-products/
These tie products by Rumpel Silk Skin are incredible. The owner, Spring Garrett, makes all kinds of things out of recycled ties. We have reviewed three tie products: her tie wallet, neck pocket and the back purse. But she also makes quite a few other things such as wine holder, tie skirt, a little snake toy, pouches and bags, cell phone pockets, and even a tie pillow!
Here's a little bit of history on the ties she uses: silk ties are beautiful examples of textiles at their finest. In their original purpose ties are worn by men as a signal to the world. These ties say something about the wearer…what they do, what they like, how they feel. Now these ties communicate something else that the wearer of Rumpelsilkskin creations desires and delights in making the most of what we have.
Rumpelsilkskin’s garments and accessories are a fun and easy way to add zest to a simple outfit. Wear them over a plain colored knit top with jeans or dress pants and you have an outfit that won’t soon be forgotten. You’ll get many compliments as people recognize the form of the ties but have never seen them worn that way before.
The shape of the ties and their fabrics inspire the creation of a wide variety of items from garments and pillows to pouches and wallets.
I invite you to explore these fun and unique creations and see how beautiful going "green" can be.
