In the south region of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the border of Brazil and Paraguay, the most populous indigenous nation of the country silently struggle for its territory, trying to contain the advance of its powerful enemies.
Expelled from their lands because of the continuous process of colonization, more than 40,000 Guarani Kaiowá live nowadays in less than 1% of their original territory. Over their lands there are now thousands of hectares of sugarcane planted by multinational enterprises that, in agreement with the government, show ethanol to the world as an environment friendly and “clean” fuel.
Without the lands and the forests, the Guarani Kaiowá have been coexisting for years with a malnutrition epidemic that reach their children. With no alternative of subsistence, adults and kids are exploited in the cane fields in exhausting working days. In the production line of the “clean” fuel, the Federal Public Prosecutor constantly sues the owners of the plants because of the child labor and the slave labor found there.
Amid the delirium of the green gold fever (the way people call sugarcane), indigenous leadership that face the imposed power many times find as their fate the death ordered by the big farmers. In the south region of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the border of Brazil and Paraguay, the... more

A couple of things about hemp make it ideal as a sustainable biofuel. First of all, industrial hemp is not a food crop. Second, it flourishes in sub-quality soil with a minimal amount of water or fertilizer. The UConn research team found that 97 percent of the virgin hemp seed oil they tested converted to biodiesel, and this high efficiency of conversion offers good potential for commercial production. The team also found that hemp seed biodiesel could be used at lower temperatures than other biodiesels currently in use.http://cleantechnica.com/2010/10/08/fill-er-up-with-hemp-biodiesel/A couple of things about hemp make it ideal as a sustainable biofuel. This documentary talks about getting America off oil and on biodiesel.
Josh Tickell, (activist, environmentalist and the director of this film), promotes sustainability, health and green living.
He examines our dependence on oil, its monopoly and its influential power on our politics through lobbyism.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upTCSSkxlxE&feature=player_embedded
He also mentions the Iraq War as driven by the oil and the 9/11 tragedy that acted as a catalytic event for it.
He wants Biodiesel that comes from algae, from trees, garbage, cooked oil, solar and wind power to be the main source of energy.
He mentions the argument that biodiesel and ethanol, respectively coming from soy and corn, would compete with our food sources leading to food shortages and raising prices, therefore he suggests biodiesel that comes from algae farms instead which should harm no one.
That is correct and I couldn't agree more with him but what he does not mention is the other huge issue with these food crops and that is GMO.
Genetically engineered plants like corn, soy and canola, are one of the most terrible threats to our humanity and planet and that should be the first reason to be mentioned to dismiss this kind of biodiesel.
Companies like Monsanto are certainly expanding their power trying to push this false alternative energy.
Also, he never mentions HEMP as the greatest, most promising form of biofuel and also the least promoted.
I am definitely on the same page with Josh Tickell and his film when it comes to the elimination of our oil dependency and advice everyone to watch it.
A while ago, I grew tired to see temporary moratoriums and created this petition, the one petition that can change our WORLD, asking our government to eliminate oil, coal and gas altogether and forever.
The price to pay for these energy sources is too high, too many deaths, too much sickness, too much control and our Freedom and our choice as citizens and consumers is long GONE.
Take it back!
Please, sign this Petition and support alternative, safe, renewable energy sources now. http://environment.change.org/petitions/view/no_more_drill_baby_drill
No more waiting, no more killing, no more "Drill, baby, drill".
Thank you.

Biofuels are an increasingly admired source of alternative energy in times of unstable gas prices.
Production of biofuels, however, is quite slow -- about an hour to produce a few hundred milliliters in a laboratory, which is not efficient, especially when demand is high. That is why researchers at University of Missouri’s Agricultural Engineering department are working on a unique way to speed up the production process to mere minutes, allowing supply to meet that high demand.

And so now the green movement is being marketed to men.
Or so Audi pretends in their Superbowl ad for their TDI Diesel (which can be converted to a biodiesel if you have a station in your home town).
Ya know, I like that Audi makes TDI's. I do.
I hate this ad.
While on the surface it almost looks like a PSA that educates about the basic environmental practices in re: to plastics, battery recycling, composting, Styrofoam and water usage; after viewing it I walked away with the odd association of feeling constricted and constrained by doing all of those small daily practices for the environment. What's up with police state over monitoring my every move? (At least I would have gotten a laugh if they had broken in on a sex seen for some un-green sex practices...that's SuperBowl Sunday appropriate, no?)
Frankly, I walked away with an anti-green feeling and irritation towards anyone between me and my ability to do the basic little things I enjoy in life (like eating, and grocery shopping, and hot-tubbing). Look Audi, go ahead and make your cars, but don't go and F up all the work that so many environmental organizations have been developing to promote and educate that small changes in every day life can be easy to do and can make a difference!
The need for liberation and freedom imprinted in the man's DNA (this we have all been taught by car commercials) was finally accomplished wby breaking out of the line and driving the open road in Audi's "green" car. Awesome. So this wasn't about being green, this was just about a need for speed, and escape from the entrapment of family (perhaps I'm being harsh, perhaps this is really a pro-marriage ad....maybe the real underlying message is If you only had a woman to deal with all of those domestic chores you wouldn't get stuck in silly entrapments and have more opportunity to roam the open road...)
Bah. Enough over analyzing. It's kind of sad that I feel the need to dig deep into this ad to find some underlying messaging. But I offer this act of mindsturbation as a favor to Audi; otherwise all that would be left to say is, hey look, there goes Audi greenwashing (c'mon guys, driving a car is just plain wasteful and harmful to the environment). So do us a favor, stick to selling your cars via the messaging about freedom and liberation that comes with having a car. Leave the environmental messaging to people who..well...care.
Believe me, we'll respect you for it in the morning.

Living in Berkeley, California, I take it for granted that I have access to high quality eco friendly biodiesel fuel at our local Biofuel Oasis. But in Hawaii, only two islands use this alternative fuel (Oahu and Maui), and only Maui can lay claim to having the only biodiesel eco-friendly rental car agency. So without further adieu..here's a little glimpse into the bio diesel Bio Beetle world in Maui.
As soon as I arrived, I knew I wasn't at Avis. The hint, Shaun Stenshol, the owner of Bio-Beetle, picked me up at luggage claim, and mentioned that he hoped I wasn't allergic to cats, as there are a lot in his lot. He went on to explain that there is ferrel cat problem on the island, and that he and his partner have spayed all but two of the 70 cats who have staked a claim on his property. I'm a cat lover, so was syked to see the friendly crew, and instantly knew that I was with people who were living a way of life, not just a job.
Shaun explains how he came up with the idea...
And then discusses their holistic approach to Eco-business...
Want more biodiesel? Shaun chats for a few moments about biodiesel politics on Maui...
So there you have it~ Bio Beetle Maui! I didn't grab a boogy board, or a cooler, but I did borrow a hiking book.
It seems fitting to close with a quote that is posted on their site:
"If the success or failure of this planet and of human beings depended on how I am and what I do,
How would I be? What would I do?"

"The Philippines rice farming town of Tabontabon has taken the bamboo transportation craze to new heights with bamboo taxis. The taxis, commissioned by Tabontabon mayor Rustico Balderian, are made out of 90% bamboo and run on coconut biodiesel.
Balderian designed the taxis as a replacement to the dominant--and dangerous--form of transportation in town, the motorcycle. Five or six people sometimes cram onto a single motorcycle, upping the chances for an accident. Balderian's ECO taxis provide a cheap alternative for townspeople.
The ECO 1 taxi seats 20 people, runs on one gallon of biodiesel fuel for eight hours, and is covered in a Filipino woven mat. ECO 2 seats eight passengers, runs on a gallon of biofuel for eight hours, and has a stereo with a sound system. Both vehicles are locally made--bamboo is indigenous to the Philippines, and local youth help with car production. Next up: a third ECO taxi to wander the streets. Balderian hasn't revealed if or how he plans to monetize his ECO taxis."
