The biggest musical flop too date, that lasted a run of only five shows back in 1988, is being revived.
Carrie the Musical (as in horror movie Carrie, as in the one you're thinking of, as in 'who the hell made this into a musical in the first place?') is being brought back to the stage by producers Jeffrey Seller and Kevin McCollum. It all kicks off next month.
It's remake time, kids. This time getting the do-over treatment is an absolute classic which stands up to the test of time and should be left ALONE. I'm talking of course about My Fair Lady.
And to add insult to injury, playing Audrey Hepburn's role of Eliza Doolittle will be none of than Keira 'I'm a Bounty Hunter' Knightly. This screams all kinds of wrong to me.It's remake time, kids. This time getting the do-over treatment is an absolute... more

"The quirky low-budget comedy film "Little Miss Sunshine" and the 1989 Laura Esquivel novel "Like Water for Chocolate" are this year's choices to be adapted as stage musicals at the annual Sundance Institute Theatre Lab at White Oak in Yulee, Fla., the institute is expected to announce on Tuesday.
"Little Miss Sunshine" -- based on the film that premiered at Sundance in 2006 and netted a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for its young star, Abigail Breslin -- has music and lyrics by William Finn and direction by James Lapine. Finn and Lapine are frequent collaborators, perhaps best known for "Falsettos."

Jorge Carreon blogs for Examiner.com how Hollywood inspired Broadway again to bring a popular comedy to the stage. But, are audiences going to stand and cheer for “Bring It On” as a musical? "For all its Broadway success, “Urinetown” surely had the worst title in the history of the American musical.
And thus, after achieving fame and a small measure of fortune from the unlikely success of a show about a dystopia where citizens are forced to pay to pee, the creators of “Urinetown” are desperately trying to top themselves. What could possibly be a more impossibly awful topic for a musical? Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann think they have the answer with a show that has its first major production this fall at Chicago’s American Theater Company: “Yeast Nation.” “I really can’t justify or defend it,” Kotis says over coffee. “But ‘yeast’ is such an interesting word. It’s an outcast word. It’s not sexy. It’s not vulgar. There is such richness in that.”
There is?
And if you thought the title was strange, consider the premise.
“Yeast Nation” is set 4 billion years ago. All of the characters are single-cell organisms—or, if you prefer, yeasts. They all live at the bottom of the sea. They all eat only salt. And they are all named Jan.
Make you wanna sing and dance? Make you wanna lay down your hard-earned money?
“The show is very odd,” Kotis says, scratching his brow and cheerfully offering up a crashingly self-evident understatement. “You’re gonna know pretty soon if you’re happy to be there, or very unhappy.”
He searches for the right metaphor. Hollmann peers at his partner.
“It’s kind of like blue cheese,” Kotis says.""For all its Broadway success, “Urinetown” surely had the worst title in the... more

"Following in the recent footsteps of Green Day and Duncan Sheik, singer Regina Spektor is making the transition from rock star to stage artist in the new musical production "Beauty," which is expected to open in 2011.
The Russian-born Spektor, whose latest alt-rock album "Far" was released earlier this year, currently is writing the music for the show, collaborating with playwright Tina Landau, whose one-act play "Beauty" provides the inspiration for the production.
Stuart Oken, who is one of the producers, told Culture Monster that there will likely be between 10 to 15 original songs in the musical.
"Regina's kind of fresh voice is elusive. There are plenty of theater composers, but we wanted a pop rock flavor -- though it's really hard to call Regina that," said Oken on the phone from his office in Chicago.
"She's a complete musician who is classically trained. She is surprising at every turn."
"Beauty," which is loosely based on the "Sleeping Beauty" tale, is a musical that takes place in two different time periods. The first half hews closely to Landau's original play, which is set 1,000 years in the past. The second part of the musical brings us closer to the present day, according to Oken.
He declined to elaborate anymore on the plot or to discuss casting.
Producers are aiming to bring the musical to Broadway near the end of the 2011-12 season. They are also planning a tryout run at a major regional theater, most likely in 2011.
The book for the musical is being written by Landau, with lyrics by Michael Korie. (Landau is currently directing the Broadway run of "Superior Donuts" by Tracy Letts.)
The one-act "Beauty" had its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2003, according to a company spokeswoman.

"Lord Lloyd-Webber's latest Saturday night talent show will search for a girl to play Dorothy and a dog to play Toto in The Wizard Of Oz, the BBC says.
Winners of the programme will star in a West End production of the musical.
It follows BBC One's I'd Do Anything, Any Dream Will Do and How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? which also found musical stars.
The new programme, also called The Wizard Of Oz, will again be presented by Graham Norton.
"I can't wait to work with the BBC again in the hunt for Dorothy - an iconic role of course made famous by a young Judy Garland in the film in 1939," he added.
"But, as a cat man myself, however, I approach casting Toto with considerable trepidation."
The search for Dorothy will begin with auditions across the UK in early 2010 with the programme airing later in the year.
