Newly-released FBI memo from 1950 confirms "flying saucers" crashing in New Mexico

It's unclear whether this memo is a hoax, but it has just appeared on the FBI's "vault" website, devoted to once-classified documents that have become public. The brief memo contains information from an Air Force informant about "flying saucers."

In the memo, FBI agent Guy Hottel records what an "investigator for the Air Forces" (whose name is blacked out) told him about what is popularly called "the Roswell incident." Hottel writes:

Three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico . . . they were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter . . . Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall, dressed in a metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots.

The informant speculates that the saucers were found in New Mexico because the US government had a "high powered radar set up" there, and "it is believed that the radar interferes with the controlling mechanism of the saucers."

This memo seems to confirm what many believed happened at Roswell, which includes flying saucers crashing and alien autopsies (at left, you can see a 1947 FBI memo about Roswell). But it's important to remember that even if the memo is authentic, it is simply the record of what one informant said to another. We don't know who this Air Force investigator is, nor do we know whether he's reporting what other people told him, or if he witnessed the saucers himself. He could be simply reporting a rumor. Over at the International Business Times, Jesse Emspack calls the memo part of a 50-year-old hoax, and explains how exactly this authentic FBI document is just the last part of a long paper trail created by a fake UFO sighting. Secret UFO X-Files Released By British Government

Thousands of UFO sightings and an "alien abductions" are detailed in the close-encounter documents released by the National Archives today.To the wannabe Mulder and Scullys out there we should point out that the intelligence papers on a reported UFO sighting known as the "Rendlesham incident" have gone missing.The missing files relate to a report of mysterious lights from US servicemen at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk in 1980.The disappearance came to light with today's release of 8,000 previously classified documents on UFOs.Officials found a "huge" gap where defence intelligence files relating to the case should be, the papers show.Photographs and sketches of UFOs made by members of the public are included, as well as their eyewitness reports.Among the documents is testimony from an airline pilot and his son who say they spent five minutes watching an object made up of three circles fly past their garden in Hellingly, East Sussex.The pilot reported it to Air Traffic Control in West Drayton, and an official labelled his sighting as one by "a credible witness".But another defence official later wrote a memo saying the report "contains nothing of air defence significance".More attention is given to the crew of an RAF Tornado who encountered an object the size of a C130 Hercules transport aircraft while flying over the North Sea in 1990.The pilot describes flying at Mach 0.8 but being overtaken by an aircraft the like of which he had never seen before.He talks about lights and even "an engine area" but the files also show how a possible explanation emerges - a Russian rocket booster was re-entering the earth's atmosphere on that same night.Another file released reveals six small "flying saucers" were found by members of the public in locations across southern England in 1967. Four police forces and the army were mobilised before it emerged the incident was a rag-day hoax by engineering students from Farnborough Technical College.So if you want to know what kind of little green man secretes the UK government has been keeping from you now is the time to have a look - the files are only available free on the website for a month.

The Inland Sea pt. 1

"This is gonna be a carousel ride..."

Welcome to the first instalment of The Inland Sea: An Australian Odyssey. Over the coming weeks and months we shall visit a number of locations throughout Australia. This first episode is an introduction to what is to come and it sets up the premise of our ten-week marathon through the outback.

Our trip started in Melbourne on November 28, 2008. The first interviews were done in Aldinga Arts EcoVillage, south of Adelaide, one day the following week. From there we headed north, all the way to Darwin, via Uluru. After Darwin we travelled west, to Port Hedland before cutting through the desert to Carnarvon. From here on, we more or less followed the coastline back to Melbourne. We returned on February 7, 2009, perhaps better known as Black Saturday.

We visited a number of ecovillages and housing co-ops, including Somerville Ecovillage near Perth, and the Pinakarri community in Fremantle. Some of these communities were successful and longstanding projects. Others were in different stages of the process of being established; of beginning to build homes; and, of being accepted and acknowledged by their local councils. A couple of people we met had tried to build an ecovillage, but at some stage in the process, and for different reasons, their projects had crumbled and no longer existed.

In the west, we also visited Prince Leonard I and his micronation, the Hutt River Province. Prince Leonard has claimed sovereignty since 1970, and has not paid any tax to Australia since his secession. Despite only having about 20-30 full-time residents in his self-declared state, His Royal Highness claims to have more than 13,000 citizens worldwide.

There will also be episodes of other stories and interviews we picked up along our way. We'll talk to an old lady of the outback, encounter some wildlife, go scouting for UFOs, talk to visual artist Dida Sundet about her work on the road, and ponder the trials and tribulations of the project..
