The actor Sean Penn has flown to Cuba to chase what would be the biggest scoop of his career as a part-time journalist: an interview with Fidel Castro.
The Oscar winner, who last year bagged interviews with Raúl Castro and Hugo Chávez, is reportedly on assignment for Vanity Fair in his quest to meet Cuba's former president.
In a sign of Havana's approval the communist party newspaper Granma covered Penn's visit yesterday to the Island of Youth, where he visited a gallery and met artists.
According to the online magazine tmz.com Penn hopes to ask Fidel about Cuba's evolving relationship with the Obama administration. The actor Sean Penn has flown to Cuba to chase what would be the biggest scoop of his... more

According to the magazine, the photographer’s relationship with the first family goes back to 2004, when Barack Obama was running for the U.S. Senate. She shot his family at the campaign headquarters, long before he was in the running for the presidency." (..)
"The celebrity photographer has been in the news of late due to financial problems. Art Capital Group sued Leibovitz for failing to meet deadlines on a $24 million loan, which she needed to in order to deal with a “dire financial condition” stemming from her mortgage obligations, tax liens and unpaid bills.

He almost became a member of the Palin family, but Levi Johnston – who fathered former Gov. Sarah Palin's grandchild with her daughter Bristol – isn't holding back when it comes to spilling the Alaska clan's secrets.
"There was a lot of talk of divorce in that house ... times when Sarah and Todd would mention it and sound pretty serious," says Johnston, who turns 19 this year. (Last month, the couple denied Internet rumors of a pending divorce.)
But that wasn't all. In a wide-ranging interview with Vanity Fair in its October issue, out nationally Sept. 8, the teen says that the onetime vice-presidential nominee's frequent self-description as a "hockey mom" who put family above career was far from the truth.
"Even before she was nominated, there wasn't much parenting in that house," he says. "Sarah doesn't cook, Todd doesn't cook – the kids would do it all themselves: cook, clean, do the laundry, and get ready for school. Most of the time Bristol would help her youngest sister with her homework, and I'd barbecue chicken or steak on the grill."
Talk of Quitting
Palin often complained that her job as governor was "too hard," according to Johnston, and after spending a couple weeks of being gloomy about losing the vice presidency, she focused on making money instead of the needs of Alaskans.
"Sarah was sad for a while. She walked around the house pouting," Johnston says. "A week or two after she got back she started talking about how nice it would be to quit and write a book or do a show and make 'triple the money.' She would blatantly say, 'I want to just take this money and quit being governor.' "
Palin resigned from her post as governor of Alaska in July.
The bid for the White House went to the head of the woman from Wasilla, Johnston adds, saying Palin would say things like, "I brought everything to the table" and "the majority of people were out there voting because of me!" "She definitely thought she was running for president," he says.
Palin's ambition for higher office also affected the family's plans for Bristol and Johnston's baby, he says. The governor suggested that she and husband Todd could adopt her daughter's baby and keep his real parentage a secret.
"That way, she said, Bristol and I didn't have to worry about anything," Johnston says. "Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging – she wouldn't give up. She would say, 'So, are you gonna let me adopt him?' I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn't want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid."He almost became a member of the Palin family, but Levi Johnston – who fathered... more
Former Governor Sarah Palin, claiming to be a staunch advocate of family values, is in reality a negligent parent. In an interview for Vanity Fair Magazine, Levi Johnston, father of Sarah Palin's first grandchild, paints an ugly portrait of Sarah Palin. According to Johnston the Palins were absentee parents, leaving the children to fend for themselves. At home, Sarah Palin was moody, demanding, lazy, and spoke constantly of hating her position as Governor of Alaska.

After it took the top spot at the box office this weekend and enjoyed relatively good reviews to boot, everyone wants to talk about The Hangover. (The reviews are justified. We didn’t run one, for which I blame E3, but it’s a great comedy.) Some folks are persistently calling it a sleeper hit, which is absurd; as Jeff Wells points, out, it’s just a hit. Period. Todd Phillips took a mediocre script, seriously reworked it and worked with his producers to secure a solid, cheap trio to headline the project. The result is gold. But is it also true? Nikki Finke claims to have the scoop on the ‘real’ Hangover story. But that’s not even as interesting as what happened between script and screen. After it took the top spot at the box office this weekend and enjoyed relatively good... more

Directed and produced by Matt Tyrnauer, a Vanity Fair correspondent, “Valentino” has been quietly selling out engagements in art houses across the country. After seven weeks of release, the film, now playing in 28 locations, has sold $736,755 in tickets – a very good showing for the embattled genre...
... The results are notable because Mr. Tyrnauer, a first-time filmmaker, turned down distribution offers from established companies - he’s not saying which ones – in favor of going it alone. The DIY-route in general is one that more filmmakers are pursuing as the specialty business shrinks...
The results are notable because Mr. Tyrnauer, a first-time filmmaker, turned down distribution offers from established companies - he’s not saying which ones – in favor of going it alone. The DIY-route in general is one that more filmmakers are pursuing as the specialty business shrinks.
Publishers have noticed and are releasing at least two new books on the subject: “The Reel Truth” by Reed Martin and the tentatively titled “A Practical Guide to the New World of DIY, Web and Hybrid Distribution for Filmmakers” by Jon Reiss.
Details on The Reel Truth are below in the reply section.

For the first time in three years, Vanity Fair won't print a "green" issue dedicated to the environment, The Independent reports.
Conde Nast, the publisher of Vanity Fair, claims that environmental issues are so ingrained in the news that a dedicated issue is unnecessary. Perhaps, but some fear that with the global economy in meltdown, people aren't as worried about the environment as they were during the boom years.
We agree that a dedicated issue to the environment is unnecessary. We'd rather see it peppered in along with all the other coverage. Just like Earth Day provides one day to think about the environment, and then 364 other days to ignore it, a single issue dedicated to green topics makes it seem niche and limited. For the first time in three years, Vanity Fair won't print a "green" issue dedicated... more

Inside the April issue of Vanity Fair, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel and Paul Rudd spoof a 2006 cover with Tom Ford, Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. But with bodysuits. What a cop-out.
Is it funny that the guys (and Annie Leibovitz, who shot both images) spoofed the shot? Sure. But it would have been funnier if the guys were actually naked. Who made this decision? Why bodysuits? It's understandable to try and create a "pale" skin tone for the purposes of recreating the original photograph properly, but Leibovitz is a whiz with lighting. Is the world not ready for Jonah Hill's ass? As for Jason Segel, he already did full-frontal nudity in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. We saw Seth Rogen's bare buttocks in Knocked Up. Why is it that naked woman can appear on the cover of Vanity Fair, yet none of these dudes can expose their bellies? Is it because they're not thin?
Of course, this issue just reflects the problems with nudity in our society in general. When I went to see Friday The 13th, the theater was crowded with men and women, but after the third time a female actress was shown topless, some girl behind me yelled out, "How come we can't see no huevos?"Inside the April issue of Vanity Fair, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel and Paul... more
