Muntazer Al Zaidi, the reporter who threw his shoes at President Bush and called him a “dog,” has allegedly written Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki an apology for embarrassing him. “Zaidi said in his letter that his big ugly act cannot be excused,” said Maliki’s media adviser. Zaidi apparently added, “But I remember in the summer of 2005, I interviewed your Excellency and you told me, ‘Come in, this is your house.’ And so I appeal to your fatherly feelings to forgive me.” Zaidi’s brother doubted that he actually apologized. “This information is absolutely not true. This is a lie. Muntazer is my brother and I know him very well. He does not apologize," he said. It’s unclear, exactly, how Zaidi’s contrition will affect his newfound celebrity in the Middle East. Since the incident, more than 1,000 lawyers have supposedly volunteered to defend him, an Egyptian man offered him his 20-year-old daughter as a bride, and shoemakers across the Middle East have claimed that they were the makers of the famous shoes.Muntazer Al Zaidi, the reporter who threw his shoes at President Bush and called him a... more

BAGHDAD – President George W. Bush says the Iraq war is not over.
Bush appeared at a Baghdad news conference Sunday with Iraq's prime minister and said there is more work to be done with the war now in its sixth year.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said his country is making progress on every front.
The two leaders participated in a ceremonial signing of a new U.S.-Iraqi security agreement. Bush said the agreement puts Iraq on solid footing — now and in the future.
Not everyone was happy with Bush's visit.
A man at the news conference threw his shoes at Bush and was dragged out by security officials. The president, who ducked to avoid being hit, joked about the incident and calmly took questions.
BAGHDAD (AP) — His legacy forever linked to an unpopular war, President George W. Bush flew under intense security to Iraq on Sunday where he called the nearly six-year conflict hard but necessary to protect the United States and give Iraqis hope. "The war is not over," he declared.
Bush was reminded of the intense opposition to his policies when a man threw two shoes at him — one after another — during a news conference with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Bush ducked both throws, and neither man was hit.
"All I can report is a size 10," Bush joked.

I am so sick of this guy taking care of the rich. Good f****g riddance.
excerpt:
Congress wanted to guarantee that the $700 billion financial bailout would limit the eye-popping pay of Wall Street executives, so lawmakers included a mechanism for reviewing executive compensation and penalizing firms that break the rules.
But at the last minute, the Bush administration insisted on a one-sentence change to the provision, congressional aides said. The change stipulated that the penalty would apply only to firms that received bailout funds by selling troubled assets to the government in an auction, which was the way the Treasury Department had said it planned to use the money.
Now, however, the small change looks more like a giant loophole, according to lawmakers and legal experts. In a reversal, the Bush administration has not used auctions for any of the $335 billion committed so far from the rescue package, nor does it plan to use them in the future. Lawmakers and legal experts say the change has effectively repealed the only enforcement mechanism in the law dealing with lavish pay for top executives.I am so sick of this guy taking care of the rich. A surprise visit by US President George Bush to Iraq has been overshadowed by an incident in which two shoes were thrown at him during a news conference.
An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush “a dog” and threw his footwear, just missing the president.
The soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture.
During the trip, Mr Bush and Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki signed the new security agreement between their countries.
The pact calls for US troops to leave Iraq in 2011 - eight years after the 2003 invasion that has in part defined the Bush presidency.
Speaking just over five weeks before he hands over power to Barack Obama, Mr Bush also said the war in Iraq was not over and more work remained to be done.
His previously unannounced visit came a day after US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told US troops the Iraq mission was in its “endgame”.

President Bush made a farewell visit Sunday to Baghdad, Iraq, where he met with Iraqi leaders and was targeted by an angry Iraqi man, who jumped up and threw shoes at Bush during a news conference.
Among Muslims, throwing shoes at someone, or sitting so that the bottom of a shoe faces another person, is considered an insult.
The man was dragged out screaming after throwing the shoes. Bush ducked, and the shoes, thrown one at a time, sailed past his head during the news conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in his palace in the heavily fortified Green Zone.
As the man continued to scream from another room, Bush said: “That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know.”
Bush had been lauding the conclusion of the security pact with Iraq as journalists looked on.
Bush landed at Baghdad International Airport on Sunday and traveled by helicopter to meet with President Jalal Talabani and his two vice presidents at Talabani’s palace outside the Green Zone.
It marked the first time he has been outside the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad without being on a military base.
The visit was Bush’s fourth since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.President Bush made a farewell visit Sunday to Baghdad, Iraq, where he met with Iraqi... more

Sally McDonough, a spokeswoman for the first lady, confirmed the ornament would not be displayed. "It's inappropriate and it's not being hung," she said. She said that when asked about the issue yesterday, the White House tree decorations were not complete. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A federal judge ordered the release of five Guantanamo Bay detainees Thursday, saying the government failed to show that they were "enemy combatants."
Judge Richard Leon issued the order in the case of six detainees who were challenging their detention after the Supreme Court ruled in June that all Guantanamo detainees could fight their detentions.
On Thursday, Leon ruled that five of the six should be released because the government failed to show by a preponderance of evidence that any of them, other than one man identified as bin Saeed, had planned to travel to Afghanistan to take up arms against the United States and its allies, as the government claimed.
Claims by a single source against five of the men brought up questions of credibility, reliability and corroboration, the judge said.
However, the government had provided sufficient evidence against the sixth man, the judge ruled.
The men are Algerians who lived in Bosnia when they were arrested in 2002. Initially, the U.S. government claimed that they were suspects in a plot to blow up the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo.
Later, the government dropped those claims and said the men were plotting to go to Afghanistan and fight against the U.S. and coalition troops there.WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A federal judge ordered the release of five Guantanamo Bay... more

WASHINGTON – A federal judge on Thursday ordered the release of five Algerians held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the continued detention of a sixth in a major blow to the Bush administration's strategy to keep terror suspects locked up without charges.
In the first case of its kind, U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon said the government's evidence linking the five Algerians to al-Qaida was not credible as it came from a single, unidentified source. Therefore, he said, the five could not be held indefinitely as enemy combatants, and should be released immediately.
"To allow enemy combatancy to rest on so thin a reed would be inconsistent with this court's obligation," Leon told the crowded courtroom.
As a result, he said, "the court must and will grant their petitions and order their release."
As for the sixth Algerian, Belkacem Bensayah, Leon said there was enough reason to believe he was close to an al-Qaida operative and had sought to help others travel to Afghanistan to join the terrorists' fight against the United States and its allies.
One of the men to be released is Lakhdar Boumediene, whose landmark Supreme Court case last summer gave the Guantanamo detainees the right to challenge their imprisonment.
The Algerians' attorneys said they would appeal Bensayah's detention but hugged each other and colleagues in congratulations after Leon's ruling.
"It's a relief," said attorney Robert C. Kirsch.
