July 2nd marked forty years since the death of Jim Morrison of heart failure at the age of 27. A brilliant mind lost so young whose music was truly ahead of its time. So I thought those who remembered the music and who wanted to listen could contribute music, memories or news about him to this thread to commemorate one of the geniuses of music.

It was all about the Mona Lisa. That’s all I wanted to see in Paris – that Mona Lisa smile. Everything else would be incidental. I was bound to see the Eiffel Tower, I was bound to cross the Seine, and oh yeah, I had to pay a visit to Jim Morrison. I owed to my roots and the boys back at the bar. I had stopped by to pay my respects to Sartre and Beckett at the Montparnasse Cemetery. Now on this muggy August afternoon I was seeking out the Lizard King Himself.
I came prepared for my visit to the Pere LaChaise, as prepared as I was willing to be prepared, I had my camera and a bottle of wine. Unfortunately I didn’t heed the advice of the information I received online. My journey at Pere Lachaise began at the south end of the cemetery – everything was going to be uphill from there. It would have been all downhill had I started from the north end. That seems to be par for the course for me. I’m good at the research I just can’t be bothered with the follow through. I know the easy way, I just refuse to accept it.

The soon-to-retire governor of Florida may pardon Jim Morrison for exposing himself on stage at an infamous 1969 Miami concert. Charlie Crist, who is leaving his post in two months, said he is considering a posthumous pardon of the Doors frontman, who was sentenced to jail in 41 years ago for exposing himself and swearing at the crowd."Stay tuned," Crist told US site The Hill this week. "It's something I'm willing to look into in the time I have left."The Doors' performance at Miami's Dinner Key auditorium, on 1 March 1969, is one of the most notorious concerts in American rock'n'roll history. Morrison, a native of Florida, arrived at the oversold gig wasted, after drinking en route from LA to Florida that day - all fired up from a provocative play he had seen in LA the night before. He antagonised the crowd, and recordings certainly prove that he was using some colourful language on stage. He also took off his shirt and he asked if the audience wanted to "see his cock", but to this day it's still unclear if he did actually, show the audience his...morrison.His behaviour spurred a stage invasion and he ended up getting into a fight with the promoter. Morrison and his lawyers had hoped to turn the trial into a First Amendment battle, and he claimed in several later interviews that the trial was a sham.Morrison was ultimately cleared on charges of lascivious behaviour and, bizarrely, drunkenness, but he was convicted of profanity and indecent exposure. Sentenced to six months in prison and a $500 fine. His lawyers were appealing the sentence when Morrison died in Paris in 1971, which meant that he never served any prison time. After losing his Senate bid last week to Republican candidate Marco Rubio, the governor has until January to issue a pardon. His final meeting with Florida's board of executive clemency will take place on 9 December, the day before what would have been Morrison's 68th birthday. "Anything," Crist promised, "is possible." Musical Musings with Paul Bourgeois
Make it a part of your Monday morning.
Performers are insane. It takes a madman to want to stand up in front of people and somehow find a sense of self-worth from doing that. The performer is as insane as the audience drives them. They are as insane as the media wants to make them. We, the audience, are lemmings, making super lemmings out of performers. We equip them with our own self destruction, and then we drive them off the cliff so we don’t have to jump ourselves.Musical Musings with Paul Bourgeois Make it a part of your Monday morning.... more
There remains a lingering fascination with the singer who Rolling Stone magazine once posthumously featured on its cover with the saucy tagline, “He’s Hot. He’s Sexy. He’s Dead.” Almost 40 years after a heart attack in a Paris bathtub sealed his immortality, Jim Morrison continues to claim a pole position in the rock and roll pantheon as simply too cool for school, fated to crash and burn in a blaze of brilliance and excess.
For those unfamiliar with The Doors and the Morrison mythology, the American Masters airing of “When You’re Strange” is not a bad place to start, but it’s certainly not ideal. For fans of the group and its music, the concert footage featured is indeed worthwhile and captivating, but a deeper sense of the band and its history is missing.

“When You’re Strange” is a perfectly adequate documentary about the Doors. Unfortunately, it doesn’t add anything to the Doors canon, nor does it take advantage of opportunities to do so.
And while it will likely interest -- perhaps even fascinate -- people unfamiliar with singer/songwriter Jim Morrison and the Doors, well read fans of the group will probably be disappointed. For them it will be the same old same old again.
The only fresh thing in the movie is some footage of HWY, a film written by Morrison and shot by the group’s long-time still photographer, Paul Ferrara. But there are just brief snatches of it, mostly at the beginning, with absolutely no explanation for what it is or how it came about.“When You’re Strange” is a perfectly adequate documentary about the... more

Noel Gallagher of Oasis has admitted to spending over £1 million on drugs before 1998 when he decided to quit because it is "bad for your health," however, he goes on to say "I look at Chris Martin, who says he has never taken drugs in his life, and I think he is an idiot. Doing drugs is the most beautiful thing about being in a rock band."
Seems interesting that a musician would be in support of something that has killed so many of the greatest musicians in the world (Jon Bonham, Billie Holiday, Gram Parsons, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix, Rick James, Jim Morrison, Ike Turner, Dee Dee Ramone, Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson (?!?)... just to name a FEW)... I would think an artist would steer away from publicity in favor of drugs out of respect.
Or was it the drugs that made those artists so great?... Hmm... Expanding the mind...Noel Gallagher of Oasis has admitted to spending over £1 million on drugs before... more
