HBO has picked up the boxing drama that is loosely based on Mike Tyson‘s early life. British actor John Boyega, star of the hit film ‘Attack The Block,’ has been cast in the lead role of Spike Lee‘s ‘Da Brick.’
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Boyega will play Donnie, who, after his release from juvenlie detention on his 18th birthday begins an exploration of what it means to be a man for himself and those around him.
Milauna Jemai (NCIS) will play Lynette, Donnie’s mother, with him he reconnects with following a 14-month separation.
Julito McCullum (The Wire) will play Kevin, Donnie’s best friend and the one person he can’t leave behind, no matter how much he may want to.
Kamahl “Naiqui” Palmer (Gossip Girl) is set as Malik, the moral center of Donnie’s tight group of friends who is looking for direction between his middle-class upbringing and the harder realities of his environment.
Da Brick is described as a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in a supposedly post-racial America.

'Treme' actor Showers found dead, authorities say
By the CNN Wire Staff
August 25, 2011 12:30 p.m. EDT
Michael Showers played Capt. John Guidry on the acclaimed HBO series, "Treme."
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
His body is found floating in the Mississippi River in New Orleans
Police recover it and hand it over to the coroner
HBO's acclaimed 'Treme' is by the creator of 'The Wire'
.
(CNN) -- Actor Michael Showers, who made several appearances in the HBO series "Treme," was found dead Wednesday in Louisiana, a Port of New Orleans official told CNN Thursday.
His body was spotted floating in the Mississippi River near St. Louis Street in New Orleans, said Chris Bonura, communications director for the port.
Harbor police responded and retrieved the body, he said. It has been handed over to the coroner for investigation, he added.
The coroner's office did not immediately respond to CNN questions about the incident.
Showers played Capt. John Guidry on the acclaimed HBO series, which was created by David Simon following his cult classic "The Wire."
Simon hailed him as "a fine actor who contributed his talents to our drama in the warmest and most professional way.
"We enjoyed his work -- and working with him. Going forward, we're going to miss having him as part of our production. All of which seems of little import in light of the loss of a man's whole life, and what that loss truly means to him, his family, his friends. Our respect and condolences go to them, especially," Simon said in a statement on behalf of the show.
HBO is owned by Time Warner, the parent company of CNN.

The 'Social Network' director wants Daniels to play a prominent news anchor in his new series, 'More As the Story Develops'
Veteran actor Jeff Daniels is currently in talks to star in Aaron Sorkin's new HBO pilot, tentatively titled More As the Story Develops.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is set behind the scenes of a nightly cable news show and will follow a similar format to Sorkin's previous shows, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Sports Night.
Deadline reports that if all goes according to plan, Daniels will play news anchor Will McCallister, a famous television figure with Anderson Cooper- or Brian Williams-like prominence. He is intelligent and talented, but also happens to be very difficult to work with.
To learn more about the world he plans to recreate, Sorkin has recently spent time with newsmen Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews. Sorkin's new project will be his first for cable television, as all of his previous television shows -- Sports Night, The West Wing, and Studio 60 -- aired on broadcast networks.

Earlier today,10 March 2011, The Wire actress Felicia "Snoop" Pearson was arrested as part of a large-scale drug raid in Baltimore and surrounding counties.
Comments from David Simon, The Wire creator and executive producer--provided through an HBO spokesperson:
First of all, Felicia's entitled to the presumption of innocence. And I would note that a previous, but recent drug arrest that targeted her was later found to be unwarranted and the charges were dropped. Nonetheless, I'm certainly sad at the news today. This young lady has, from her earliest moments, had one of the hardest lives imaginable. And whatever good fortune came from her role in The Wire seems, in retrospect, limited to that project. She worked hard as an actor and was entirely professional, but the entertainment industry as a whole does not offer a great many roles for those who can portray people from the other America. There are, in fact, relatively few stories told about the other America.
Beyond that, I am waiting to see whether the charges against Felicia relate to heroin or marijuana. Obviously, the former would be, to my mind, a far more serious matter. And further, I am waiting to see if the charges or statement of facts offered by the government reflect any involvement with acts of violence, which would of course be of much greater concern.
In an essay published two years ago in Time magazine, the writers of The Wire made the argument that we believe the war on drugs has devolved into a war on the underclass, that in places like West and East Baltimore, where the drug economy is now the only factory still hiring and where the educational system is so crippled that the vast majority of children are trained only for the corners, a legal campaign to imprison our most vulnerable and damaged citizens is little more than amoral. And we said then that if asked to serve on any jury considering a non-violent drug offense, we would move to nullify that jury's verdict and vote to acquit. Regardless of the defendant, I still believe such a course of action would be just in any case in which drug offenses—absent proof of violent acts—are alleged.
Both our Constitution and our common law guarantee that we will be judged by our peers. But in truth, there are now two Americas, politically and economically distinct. I, for one, do not qualify as a peer to Felicia Pearson. The opportunities and experiences of her life do not correspond in any way with my own, and her America is different from my own. I am therefore ill-equipped to be her judge in this matter.

With so many TV shows from The Good Wife to 30 Rock taking recent shots at Aaron Sorkin, we almost forgot about Sorkin's own TV-tackling show, an HBO pilot he wrote about the Keith Olbermann–like host of a cable news channel.
The Daily got its hands on the still-untitled script, which Sorkin researched by spending time with Olbermann before the newsman ditched MSNBC for Current; here, the Olbermann stand-in is named "Will McAllister," and he's a network-taunting liberal who likes the ladies.
In fact, the show opens with McAllister returning from a sexy St. Lucia vacation with ESPN's Erin Andrews, only to find — in a twist that will surprise no one who has watched an Aaron Sorkin show before — that his show's new executive producer is his former love Mackensie McHale. (Apparently, this pilot will have more grunted "Macs" and "Mcs" than a dinner rush at McDonald's.) [Daily]Feb. 17, 2011
