These folks so have it together. The Space Shuttle is a flying brick designed in 1975 by the lowest bidder on a US Government contract...once they fire the engines for landing, this thing is coming down....period.
No pressure. Look at how calm all this is.
What you don't see here are the rest of the teams. Each person in this room has a bunch of people assigned to them. This room only holds the "lead controllers".
Personal soapbox. Yup, it looks easy. Nothing to it. Anyone can do it. It's all "automated". Why are we bothering? That's the general thinking until one of these antiquated, budget-gutted things lands "hard" (crashes). These folks so have it together. The Space Shuttle is a flying brick designed in 1975... more

The Space Shuttle Endeavor returned safely from a record breaking 16 day mission to the International Space Station. “Wheels stop,” were the words of Dominic L. Gorie, the commander, as the shuttle rolled to a safe stop at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
He said the end of the long mission was bittersweet. “The orbiter’s really been performing really marvelously this whole flight,” he said late Tuesday.
The shuttle delivered the first section of Japan’s large Kibo laboratory, an 18,500-pound storage compartment. The main laboratory, a unit the size of a bus, is scheduled to arrive in May aboard the shuttle Discovery. The Endeavour also ferried up a 12-foot, 3,400-pound Canadian Space Agency robot called Dextre, which is to perform maintenance outside the station.
“There really isn’t anymore a U.S. space flight program or a Russian space flight program,” Dr. Griffin, the NASA administrator said. “There is a world space flight program centered around the space station.”

A spacewalk is the most coveted assignment for any astronaut. So just imagine spending several months training for the single most important mission of your career, only to get so sick in orbit that you're pulled from the assignment. Ouch. That's exactly what's happening to German astronaut Hans Schlegel aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis. NASA will not say what's ailing the astronaut, but it's enough to delay the delivery of Europe's long overdue science laboratory to the International Space Station by a day. Until then, enjoy this sweet video of the shuttle doing a back flip... and it's shot by a satellite.A spacewalk is the most coveted assignment for any astronaut. So just imagine... more

The Japanese have designed an origami spaceplane they expect will be capable of surviving the flight from the International Space Station to the Earth's surface. Apparently the paper glider has been treated to withstand intense heat (understatement) and wind speeds of Mach 7 -- about 8,600 km/hr.
"A large spacecraft such as the Space Shuttle can reach speeds of up to Mach 20 (over 15,200 mph) when it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, and friction with the air heats the outer surface to extreme temperatures. The much lighter origami aircraft, which the researchers claim will come down more slowly, is not expected to burn up on re-entry."

DirectTV is offering satellite service on the Space Station...and a 42" flat screen to watch it on.
So, lets review....you grow up dreaming of becoming an astronaut. You study hard, go to an expensive University, get a PhD in Fluid Dynamics. You land the $30k job as an astronaut and spend 3 years behind a desk waiting to be assigned. You finally get the call and spend the next 2 years training for your flight. Eventually, you get to live your dream....you are strapped into a rocket built by the lowest bidder on a US government contract, you risk your life to live your dream. You get into space...one of only a few humans ever to have the experience. You have the view of a lifetime! You are living your dream!
and now, you can keep up with how Cameron is doing on Dancing With The Stars... in HD!DirectTV is offering satellite service on the Space Station...and a 42" flat... more

Aaron Koblin composited FAA data for 24 hours of Air Traffic over the United States into a beautiful and strange animation.
With a killer sound track and an eery futuristic feel this Current TV worthy.
Graphical representations of hard text based data is something which we are going to see more and more of as the internet sprints through development at its dizzying speed.
Check out Aarons site here....

The Sun provides a little over one-kilowatt (1,000 watts) of power per square meter here on Earth, less so as we move away from the equator, and more so as we move out into space. The technology currently exists and the collateral industries provides great opportunity for promoting economic commerce. Solar Energy provides more power in one day, than ALL of the oil and coal reserves in the world will ever provide. The Sun provides a little over one-kilowatt (1,000 watts) of power per square meter... more

So the space shuttle flies up to the space station, plugs in new solar panels and zap!, the russian computers start to fail. "Your fault!" screams the Russians. Not so fast, comrade. Seems those computers were about to die anyway.
Note to Russian computer contractor:
1-connectors don't do well wet.
2- don't send a continuous OFF command to all parts of a triple redundant computer system and expect it to stay running.
3- try it before you fly itSo the space shuttle flies up to the space station, plugs in new solar panels and... more
