The battle for Jack Kerouac's estate

Hmmmm...I wonder what Jack would say?

The only people for me’, Jack Kerouac famously wrote in On The Road, the book that made his name, ‘are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous Roman candles...’

For Kerouac, the candle burned out all too quickly. When Kerouac died in 1968 at the age of 47, he was a broken alcoholic, his literary reputation so depleted he was unable even to find a paperback publisher for his last novel, Vanity of Duluoz. Unsure of what value to put on his estate, the bank valued it at a nominal $1. Over the years, it would rise to an estimated $20m.

When Kerouac died, he left everything to the woman he had loved most throughout his live - his mother, Gabrielle. When she died five years later, she in turn left everything to Kerouac’s third wife, Stella Sampas - setting in train the events that led to Stella’s family managing the Kerouac estate for the past 19 years.

Now that legacy has been sensationally called into question, with a ruling by a Florida court that the will that Gabrielle signed, leaving everything to her daughter in law, was, in fact, a forgery.

The ruling appears to bring to a close a bitter legal feud that has run for the past 15 years, featuring a colourful cast of characters including the daughter that Kerouac spent much of his life disowning, the nephew who until recently was living in the front seat of a Dodge pick-up in a California junkyard, the author of ‘a critical biography’ of Kerouac, and the retired antiques dealer who has overseen the transformation of Kerouac’s into one of the most valuable commodities in the world of American letters.

Just how valuable was demonstrated in 2001, when the original Teletype roll of On The Road was sold at Christie’s to James Isray, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts football team, for $2.43m - a world record for a literary manuscript.

On The Road was the book that came to define the beat generation, an exhilarating amphetamine-fuelled account of Kerouac’s furious travels back and forth across America in search of enlightenment and kicks.

Published in 1957, the book made Kerouac a literary sensation, but also proved his undoing. While he produced eight more books, he was never able to cope with the burden of being ‘king of the Beats’, and overwhelmed by alcoholism, he withdrew from public life, living with his mother, firstly in his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts and then in Florida.Hmmmm...I wonder what Jack would say? Elimination

The complete imprisonment of ones self, to be held grounded. To have and make your own choices in the daily dream of life, you have chosen confinement. Oh what a wise choice my friend, to what effort are we trying to intake? Effort? why, no. But as a moral, but as a discipline. The one of Responsibility. The one of Self respect. The one who holds class, yet one who is real and not like anyone you have ever met in your life. The great feeling of the aura, the spiritual guidance of nature. The word of god is a controlling contradiction, with a sexes atmosphere. 10 fingers,10 toes, 2 eyes, 2 nostrils, 2 arms, 2 legs, 2 ears. ONE mouth, that comes with ONE mind, ONE heart, and ONE body. Your audacity to use your one and only mouth to speak with filth, to use so useless. And to use your one and only mind with such disgust, molding it to be pathetic. And your one and only heart, for which you use it as an illusion to lurer all of the lost souls for which hearts your have stolen. And sadly your one and only body for which you use as an ordainment, yes a Christmas tree ordainment for someone to use once a year then to compensate for dirt or dust. No need to tell you that, no. Everyone lives their own life i believe, when you start to choose your own life, that’s where you go wrong. The dream is only getting shorter, and the generations are only getting worse, with bad music, scenes and clicks, sports and weather, movies and singers, and freedom. The chance to be free in life is close to none, where age didn't matter, where someone could actually have a life without a phone or a computer, where money didn't matter, and as long as it taste good counted. Step right up folks don't be shy another class act to go along with the 6,706,993,152 people in this god forsaken beautiful battle field, of jealously, enlightenment, compassion, absurdness, love, hate, crime, birth, conformity, and realism. To be the dealer in life, one must search for lean pockets and candy wrappers. These are my walls, and my inspirations, and my view out of my 4 inch proof windows. Being safe is a hazard, being wrong is only right, and diving deep into the ocean can only mean a shark attack. My goals are endless but this world is not. This world of systems and organization is the only meaning to life anymore. Follow the system, do what your told, and stand in line with the others. We are owned, by this system. How does it feel to be owned? How does it feel to be tested on? There is a greater and more intelligent world watching us, observing us. Trial and error is their method. We've gone to far with the ignorant leaders and the desperate followers and now we "the project" "the players in the game" "the rats in the cage" "the ants on the hill" have to sit back and watch our homes and lives, come to flame, bursting in a fire, then flooded by water. Our own homes that we have done nothing to harm intentionally just listen and do what we're told by the OH MIGHTY LEADERS. Thank you, thank you so much to everyone contributing to the deaths of your future children's, your doing a wonderful job. Beauty is everywhere around you, put down your pathetic front. Elimination is the game. Go forth and eliminate your self.
