Lion + Tiger = LIGER! Freckles was rescued from a failed backyard sanctuary in mississippi Dec 2008. 16 year old Freckles is one of the oldest Ligers around but she is one of the most recent arrivals to Big Cat Rescue. At the time of her rescue we could see a big hole in her jowl, and feared that it would lead to her demise, but she was in such bad shape that we just couldn't risk knocking her out to get a better look. Being a cranky old cat, she wasn't about to let us get a good look any other way either. She was given antibiotics in case it was just an injury, but now that she has become more calm in her new setting we can see that the problem stems from several broken teeth. Caged cats will often break off their teeth trying to chew their way out of their prison cells and when she was left behind to die in Mississippi she probably did just that.

"The record for giant pumpkins was broken this month with one farmer growing a hefty gourd that weighed more than the average cow.
The record breaker, wider than the average human arm span, was grown in Jackson Township, Ohio and officially weighed in at 1,725 pounds at the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers annual weigh-off earlier this month. The behemoth squash (of a variety of pumpkin called the Atlantic Giant) was grown by school teacher Christy Harp.
Harp said that she nursed her pumpkin to its whopping size by "pulling all the weeds and being out in the patch lots of hours," according to worldrecordsacademy.org."

Powell warned of ‘terror-industrial complex’ in 2007 interview
When MSNBC's Keith Olbermann welcomed three former members of Monty Python to Countdown on Wednesday, his biggest surprise was a question from Terry Gilliam, "How come that Colin Powell interview about the terror-industrial complex didn't become a bigger story?"
Olbermann was taken aback by the question, but by the next day he had uncovered Powell's September 12, 2007 interview with GQ Magazine. Powell's apology in that interview for his use of faulty intelligence prior to the Iraq War grabbed the headlines at the time, but he also delivered a far less-noticed warning against what Olbermann now calls "an entire aspect of the nexus of politics and terror."
"What is the greatest threat facing us now?" Powell asked. "People will say it’s terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. ... The only thing that can really destroy us is us. We shouldn’t do it to ourselves, and we shouldn’t use fear for political purposes—scaring people to death so they will vote for you, or scaring people to death so that we create a terror-industrial complex."
Observers had been expessing concern about the rise of the homeland security industry for several years prior to Powell's remarks. Tim Shorrock's groundbreaking 2005 article, "The Spy Who Billed Me," revealed how "the government has outsourced everything from spy satellites to covert operations -- and well-connected companies are cashing in." A blog inspired by the article has continued to pursue the subject.
A March 2007 Vanity Fair article on homeland security contractor SAIC and Raw Story's May 2007 expose of a questionable anthrax vaccine maker with Bush administration connections explored other aspects of the emerging terror-industrial complex in the months immediately before the Powell interview. The subject has drawn less attention in the last few years, but the rediscovery of Powell's warning may put it back in the spotlight.

They hold sick children hostage as they force parents to bankrupt themselves in the desperate scramble to pay for medical care.
The sick do not have a choice. Medical care is not a consumable good. We can choose to buy a used car or a new car, shop at a boutique or a thrift store, but there is no choice between illness and health. And any debate about health care must acknowledge that the for-profit health care industry is the problem and must be destroyed.
This is an industry that hires doctors and analysts to deny care to patients in order to increase profits. It is an industry that causes half of all bankruptcies.
Now it's Let's Make a Deal with hospital lobbyists.
First, the President was caught with his principles down, cutting a scuzzy back-room deal with pharmaceutical lobbyist Billy Tauzin to limit drug price savings to just 2% over 10 years (see attached, "Obama on Drugs: 98% Cheney?"), the New York Times today reports that another deal was sealed by lobbyist Chip Kahn of the American Hospital Association.
Here are the numbers they don't want you to see: Hospitals will be allowed to hike their prices and revenues by six trillion dollars ($5,853 billion) over the next ten years, only $155 billion less than they had projected before the Obama "reform."
In all, the Obama back-room deal will "reduce" our $26 trillion total hospital bill over the next decade by one-half of one percent.
Once again, the lobbyists got the gold mine, the public got the shaft.
