I was perusing Current.com, and came across a post on how to decipher and spot Jay-Z's Illuminati messages and Satan Worship 101. I wanted to learn so I read it. Its discussion of hidden meanings reminded me of my favorite TV show LOST.
"Did you notice all those references to polar bears?" "Why do those numbers keep showing up all over the island?" "What is the smoke monster?"
The questions can start to be answered, if you re-watch episodes and apply what you've learned from supplementary sites like Lostpedia. All the connections and foreshadowing have made this an excellent television program.
In fantasy it makes sense to search for hidden messages, because the world of fiction is entirely created by an author. It's problematic when you apply this same methodology to reality, because no one person gives reality inherent meaning.
When you listen for hidden messages, to find out whether or not Jay-Z is in the illuminati, you'll probably find them, because you are dedicated to finding inherent meaning, where underlying meaning doesn't exist.
Conspiracy theorists attach themselves to conspiracies, because they are looking for answers. They think they can find meaning on the back of the dollar bill, which is a lot easier than dealing with the fact that there might not be any inherent meaning.
Making that plunge, into an existential world, isn't as scary as they think. When we realize there is no essential meaning to anything, we are then free to create our own... and party to Jay-Z records without feeling like we're being brainwashed by the illuminati.

So everyone knows that I am totally hilarious, as well as a brilliant writer. Not everyone is aware that I'm also one of the coolest dudes who works for the internet. How does one measure coolness? Aside from impeccable style (I can assure you that I do wear Chuck Taylors and ironic sweaters) you are cool based on what music you listen to.
I've visited Brooklyn Vegan and I listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic. I've heard tons of cool dude jams. So this is my playlist of great songs from this year.
1. The Gossip - Heavy Cross
I saw naked posters of Beth Ditto on the streets of London, when I was doing a quick stint at the offices of Current UK. I was all like "wow they are much more tolerant in England to let her be a sex symbol." I realized that statement made me seem like a sexist body fascist, so when someone handed The Gossip's album to me, I gave an earnest listen. Then I was all like "I now understand why she's a sex symbol." It's a disco album played with punk rock instruments. Plus it's produced by Rick Rubin. I liked it so much that I tweeted about it.
2. Baaba Maal - Television
Baaba Maal is a Senegalese superstar, who has crafted this beautiful song. It packs a simple guitar riff with lots of percussive shakers, and the women singing things in French that I can almost understand. I believe "Télévision" translates to "TV" in anglais. I wonder if all Senegalese TV is as surreal as this.
3. IMS - Yo Digo Baila
I love this Instituto Mexicano del Sonido track. Techno basslines accented by tuba samples, kills it every time. A few months ago I wrote about rebajadas, a genre of slowed-down Cumbias in Northern Mexico. I emailed IMS to ask if he thought my correlation to Houton's Chopp'd and Screwed was accurate. He wrote back saying that I was totally wrong. He was really nice about it though.
4. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind
So here's the part of my cool dude list, where I laud mainstream rap music, as if to tell my compatriots that hip hop is cool for hipsters to like. But you already knew that this is one of the best tracks of the year. Perhaps you don't have those same nostalgic feelings that I have for New York, but surely you can agree that this is the best anthem for the piano since Bennie and The Jets. If that doesn't get you, did you know there are allegations that Jay-Z is a freemason planning a New World Order?
5. Chairlift - Bruises
6. Matt & Kim - Daylight
Okay so I put both these songs on my 2009 list, but I feel like a real jerk because they both came out in 2008. As a consolation I did listen to them in 2009 also.
7. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home
Maybe it's just because I live in Los Angeles, but this is the most buzzed about band in these parts. There are like nine hundred members in this band. This song sounds like a party at my parent's non-existent cabin in the foothills of Mount Shasta. Everyone showed up in a great mood with instruments, and whiskey. I tried to see these guys on Halloween, but we ended up waiting too long for Macaroni and Cheese sandwiches, and missed 95% of their set. There's always 2010.
8. Sleigh Bells - Ring Ring
Dude, you're clipping. That's what happens when you record louder than the recording device can record. Sleigh Bells doesn't give a shit. The lady-part of this duo was a teen popstar-turned-teacher. The dude was in a hardcore band. This song is so addictive. I guess its those rappy vocals over that Funkadelic sample. I think this band will get huge in 2010. I mean they were able to get industry bigwigs watch them perform late at night in Bushwick.
9. Fanfarlo - Harold T. Wilkins, Or How To Wait For A Very Long Time
Oh snap upon further research this jam came out in 2008 too. I'm beginning to look like a not very cool dude.
10. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
Clearly Brian Wilson cloned himself, and sent this clone to infiltrate the Brooklyn music scene. Grizzly Bear is the result. Thank you for this track, science.
11. SALEM x Gucci Mane - Round One
This dark ethereal remix of dope rap, is sublime. I listened to it so many times. If I were writing a dramatic promo for this track this would be the copy: “In 1999 people used to make jokes about electroclash/gangsta rap remixes. In 2009 people stopped joking.”
12. Phoenix - 1901
I know that Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is on everyone's "best of list." To make this "best of list" different I made sure to put their second most popular song, so as to increase my indie credibility. But this song is still really good.
13. The xx - Islands
This is one of those songs that was playing everywhere I went, and it took me months to realize that it was the xx. Now that I figured it out, I know why they will become superstars.
14. Woods - Rain On
This is cinematic music, even if you aren't making a movie. You can listen to this song on your iPod walking down a rainy street, and feel like your life is somehow more meaningful. I mean it's not any more meaningful, it'll just seem that way, and perception is 9/10ths of the law.
15. Fool’s Gold - Surprise Hotel
Which white band performing African pop do you like the best? My answer is LA based Fool's Gold, because they know how to party a lot better than those stuffy Columbia grads, Vampire Weekend.
16. Dan Deacon - Snookered
I used to say that Dan Deacon is what would happen to me if I let myself go. That's not entirely true. Though I would be more fat and bald, I still wouldn't be able to make beautiful music from broken children's instruments. This eight-minute behemoth builds in a way you wouldn't necessarily expect from the man behind Crystal Cat.
17. Kid British - Sunny Days
This song sounds like it was recorded by Electric Light Orchestra, if they knew how to rap. The lyrics are about a dude who is sad, but you wouldn't know that by the upbeat nature of this jam. Why not get the whole album, and impress all your stateside friends.
That's my list. I'd like to wish a happy new year to cool dudes and ladies everywhere. So everyone knows that I am totally hilarious, as well as a brilliant writer. Not... more

I think it's very hard to mediate rap and comedy. Biz Markie was able to do it in the eighties, but today hundreds of terrible comedians are becoming awful rappers. So it's very special when you get to see a hilarious comedian, rapping with an incredible musician.
Last night Alicia Keyes appeared on the Colbert Report, to sing her rendition of Empire State of Mind, the track made famous on Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3. Jay-Z wasn't there to sing his verse, so Colbert sang his own lyrics.
The line that most speaks to me is:
Still hit the City / Time Square keep it real / Hard Rock Cafe for the appetizer deal
I'm a sucker for the nachos they offer at Hard Rock Cafe. Last Christmas Eve I spent $25 USD on the Hard Rock Nachos in Cartagena, Colombia.
Is $25 too much to pay for nachos that taste equally mediocre in Times Square as they do in South America? No. Frequenting Hard Rock cafes at the other end of the world connects you to your brethren in every suburb in the United States.
Stephen Colbert represents an emerging subgenre of hip hop: Pan-globalist-suburban-consumer raps.I think it's very hard to mediate rap and comedy. Biz Markie was able to do it in... more

Lots of legitimate rappers fight for the title of the best rapper alive. Historically Jay-Z has held the title, but Lil Wayne is now fighting for that claim. I, however, am thoroughly unconcerned with who is the best rapper alive (that title will always go to Old Dirty Bastard in my mind.) I'm more interested in who holds the definitive title of worst rapper alive.
YouTube searches reveal that hundreds of people are eligible to hold this title.
Is the worst rapper alive MC 'raps about Snakes on a Plane'?
[youtube sCVutW7ryxY]
Is the worst rapper alive MC 'but you know what'?
[youtube jcPYrADEo08]
Is the worst rapper alive MC 'there's no way you're going to sit through this whole video?'
[youtube Aae_HL6OenA]
Is it the worst rapper alive MC 'I'm the best man, I did it?'
[youtube bHpw6CzprNY]
Or is the worst rapper alive MC 'I'm bad, but I'm also seven and really cute?'
[youtube niBaPKmJLjQ]
You decide, who is the worst rapper alive? Let me know in the comments below.

My favorite day of the year is the day that Coachella releases its lineup. I like it more than the actual concert (because I am an idealist.) Today the lineup was released, and it's making my heart skip a beat. (I also just drank lots of coffee, so that could also be the reason.)
I think this is one of the best lineups I've seen in years. The key to a good billing is simple. You need:
Bands you have no interest in seeing.
Bands that you want to see in all font sizes.
You don't want to like all the bands. If you want to see every band, you'll end up feeling disappointed because you've missed sets. This also provides an important gap in your schedule. For example, I don't care about Public Image Ltd, which means when they perform, I can buy a churro.
Bands billed at different font sizes means they'll play at different times. So you can actually see them perform. If you really wanted to see Muse and DJ Tiësto you'd probably be out of luck, because they will be going on at the same time.
I am excited to see these bands:
Friday: Jay-Z! The Specials! Grizzly Bear! Sleigh Bells! Calle 13! Wale!
Saturday: MGMT! Hot Chip! Gossip! Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes!
Sunday: Pavement! Thom Yorke! Phoenix! Sly and the Family Stone! Matt & Kim! Rusko!
Who are you looking forward to?
Check out Friday's act Passion Pit, on their Embedded Tour Stop.

Josh Heller from Online Comedy went to Fever Ray last night at the Fonda in LA. This is his recap and some YouTube clips from the show. —SNK
Last night I went to the Music Box at the Fonda to see the most anticipated show of the year. That may be a subjective claim, because my friend convinced me to buy tickets six months in advance, he was sure this show would sell out. He ended up forgetting a ticket, and bought one at the door.
We edged our way towards the stage, for the last ten minutes of Nosaj Thing's set. I wish we got their earlier because I'm a sucker for the ethereal dancey bleeps and bloops that come out of people's computers. Instead, I was splitting a #3 at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. The curtains closed after his set, and the house lights went on. Strange mood-setting ambient sounds trickled out of the speakers. My friend said it sounded like we were about to be attacked by The Smoke Monster from LOST.
Fortunately we didn't get attacked by any monsters, just a parade of drunk girls, who apologized for being so annoying.
The tempo of the hypnotic music moved faster, then the curtains finally opened. The audience was blasted with fog, air-conditioning, and the scent of patchouli. It smelled like a used-record store inside of a Wal-Mart. Smoke filled the space. The men standing in front of synthesizers and percussion, wore tall hats and Age of Enlightenment make-up. They looked like they've been haunting Versailles since the 1680s. Fever Ray, née Karin Dreijer Andersson, entered the stage dressed inside of what looked like a buffalo.
[youtube WLlZldIELn4]
Lasers formed a virtual tent above the crowd, as she started her hour long set. The light show was very impressive. The lighting changed for each song during the performance. At one point antique lamps illuminated on beat, making you feel like you were at Disney's Haunted Mansion. The coolest laser effects acted like an iTunes visualizer.
I'm very happy that I didn't arrive at the concert in a time machine. If you had time-traveled from Colonial Massachusetts you'd be sure that you were witnessing a Pagan ritual. At some point Fever Ray took off her buffalo, and the spotlight shined on to this spooky lady, who vaguely resembled the witch from Army of Darkness.
During the performance she moved her hands into the shape of a triangle. I'm sure this led conspiracy theorists to say she was a mason and a member of the illuminati. It led me to say "HOV" and presume that she was in fact Jay-Z.
[youtube 4vQjP0mDVw]
She played her entire album, and I didn't even get bored until the last two songs. Which is very impressive, because at most shows I'm bored after the first few minutes. Fever Ray played an excellent show that outstandingly translated the eeriness of her album on to the stage.
It would suck though, if you thought you were going to a Sugar Ray concert.Josh Heller from Online Comedy went to Fever Ray last night at the Fonda in LA. This... more

Today on Current Music:
+ Dead Man's Bones—aka Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields—announced their upcoming tour dates with a suitably creepy ad. The album was recorded with the help of a children's choir, and on tour there will be local groups adding the choral parts into the stage show. There's also going to be a talent show instead of opening bands. Why would I make something like this up?
+ The Dead Weather—aka Jack White's latest project—will play a free gig on Wednesday at an LA record store owned by White.
+ Dead by Sunrise—aka Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and friends—offer a peek behind the scenes of their album, out October 13.
+ Song I am most looking forward to on Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3: "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)." The album also features collaborations with Rihanna, Kanye West, Timbaland, Drake and more. Can we get a sticker like the kind they put on organic fruit for organic sounds? FRESH! No Auto-Tune was harmed in the making of this record!
