Pharmacy Mistakenly Gives Pregnant Woman Abortion Pill

She is six weeks pregnant and when she went to the pharmacy to pick up an antibiotic her doctor had prescribed, the pharmacist gave her an abortion drug by mistake.
Mareena Silva might lose her unborn child because of the prescription drug error, which occurred last Thursday.
"I took it because I thought it was mine," Silva said.
Silva said the pharmacist at the Ft. Lupton Safeway gave her the prescription of methotrexate. Methotrexate is used in chemotherapy regimens to treat cancer, but it is also used to terminate early-stage pregnancies.
After she took it, Silva was nauseated.
"I came back and I looked at the bottle and it wasn't my name," she said.
The methotrexate was intended for a 59-year-old woman with the exact same last name as Silva's and a similar first name.
"My doctor immediately told me to try and make myself vomit to see if I could get the medicine to come back up," Silva said.
Silva was then rushed to Platte Valley Medical Center where they gave her charcoal to absorb the drug.
"For all this to happen now is really overwhelming," said Silva. "This is my first child, so it's really difficult to deal with."
When 7NEWS asked, Safeway admitted its pharmacy mixed up prescriptions.
In a statement to 7NEWS, Safeway said, "Safeway's first concern is the health of our patients. When the pharmacist became aware of what happened, he worked with the patient and with her physicians to minimize any possible health consequences to the patient and her unborn child. We have extended our sincere apologies to the customer, and offered to pay any medical expenses incurred as a result of a prescription error. We are also very concerned about how this happened and we are conducting a full and complete investigation. Safeway has pharmacy systems and processes in place to prevent this kind of occurrence. We have a well-earned reputation for reliably and safely filling prescriptions, and we will continue to work diligently to ensure our procedures and policies are being followed at each of our pharmacies."
Silva isn't so convinced.
"Sorry's not going to cut it. I'm going to have to deal with this for a long time," Silva said. "My baby could have deformities. There's a lot that goes with it."
Doctors are checking Silva's bloodwork to make sure her hormone levels are OK. She could miscarry, carry the child to full-term with severe birth defects or she could have a happy, healthy baby.
7NEWS checked and it is common practice at Walgreens and other pharmacies to ask for your address when issuing prescription medication just in case names are similar.

Little girl shot in the throat by brother, then goes to school with a bandage

A nine-year-old girl was 'accidentally' shot by her brother but kept it quiet until the following day when a teacher at her school realised what had happened.
The two children had been left home alone in Wisconsin, when they heard a dog barking and thought someone was trying to break into their home. They went to get a 9mm handgun from a room in the house, Green Bay police said.
The girl’s older brother, who is aged between 11 and 12, shot her just below the throat - apparently by mistake - while handling the gun, but then tried to hide the wound by bandaging it while their father was still out at work.

The children’s mother does not live at the home, police said.
Their father drove them to school on Friday morning seemingly unaware of what had happened, but a teacher noticed the girl was feeling unwell and called an ambulance and the police.

The girl told the teacher at Elmore Elementary 'my brother shot me last night’, said Jim Runge, of Green Bay Police Department.
‘The teacher felt something was wrong, could see something was not right with the girl (and) started questioning her. (She) initially denied (and) said she was fine,’ he added.

It was the two kids, they heard noise outside, heard the dog barking, so the girl knew where the gun was in dad's room, went and got it.

‘At some point she either handed it to her brother or he grabbed it and then a shot (went) off and struck her in the chest, just below the throat. And it exited her back, just behind the shoulder.
‘I've seen the pictures of the wound and to me it's just amazing that this little girl is going to go home tomorrow or the next day.'
The bullet, which exited through her shoulder, did not hit any of her vital organs and she did not require surgery.
The girl is expected to leave hospital in the next few days.
Amanda Brooker, of Green Bay Area Public School District, said: ‘A fourth-grader arrived at school (and) was not looking well. (The) teacher noticed, brought her down to the main office (and) realised she was seriously injured.’
Child Protective Services will help police in the investigation, who must decide whether to charge the father with any offences, reported television station WLUK FOX 11.
No charges had been made in connection with the incident as of Friday evening.

Cop shooting of unarmed Bronx man is at least 2nd US case involving pistol-mounted flashlight

The shooting of an innocent, unarmed elderly Bronx man by a cop who was trying to turn on a pistol-mounted flashlight is at least the second accidental police shooting in the US involving that same flashlight model.
But unlike Saturday’s shooting of 76-year-old Jose Colon — who survived a cop’s bullet to the stomach — an unarmed Texas man died Oct. 13 under what reportedly were strikingly similar circumstances involving the Surefire X300 flashlight.
The family of that dead man, suspected drug dealer Michael Anthony Alcala, is now suing the city of Plano for negligence in the shooting, where a cop claimed he inadvertently fired instead of turning on the flashlight as intended.
A New York firearms expert today criticized the use of pistol-mounted flashlights, saying they complicate what is already a stressful situation for cops pointing guns.
"A handgun should be a handgun, and a flashlight should be a flashlight," said firearms instructor Kenneth Cooper, who was an expert witness for one of the NYPD officers acquitted for the 1999 shooting of unarmed Bronx man Amadou Diallou.
"When you put a flashlight on a weapon system, there are numerous things that you have to manipulate, and under stress, things are more difficult," Cooper said. "I don’t like flashlights on guns, I never did. I personally don’t see the necessity . . . a flashlight to me is an unnecessary hazard."
Derek McDonald, Surefire’s vice president of marketing, said the Plano shooting was the first time time the company had heard a claim that one of its flashlights played a role in a cop firing his gun accidentally until The Post notified him of the Colon case. McDonald also noted that Surefire has sold such products since the late 1980s.
"Our product is safe, has been proven safe," McDonald said. "Used in a safe manner, it doesn’t lead to accidents. It prevents misidentification and saves police lives."
Colon was shot during a drug raid early Saturday in his Soundview apartment when Emergency Services Officer Andrew McCormack tried to turn on the Surefire X300 flashlight mounted underneath the barrel of his Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, and instead pulled the gun’s trigger, sources said.
The light is turned on by pushing one of two switches in front of the trigger guard.
Colon was unarmed and not charged with a crime. But cops busted his 41-year-old son, Alberto, for heroin possession.
The elderly Colon, who once worked for state Sen. Ruben Diaz as a supervisor in a home-attendant program, was recovering yesterday in Jacobi Hospital, where he had been visited Saturday by both Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Kelly had no immediate comment when asked whether the NYPD will continue using the weapon.
In the Texas case, an undercover narcotics police sergeant drew his pistol on drug suspect Alcala in a dark parking lot on Oct. 13, and tried to turn on his Surefire X300 flashlight on, according to a story in the Dallas Morning News.
But instead of turning on the light, the cop accidentally fired the gun, killing Alcala.
Plano police have said they don’t believe the flashlight was a problem
