"The Bush administration frequently repeats the Clinton-Rubin policy position that "a strong dollar is in our national interest." By any measure, though, the dollar has weakened steadily under this administration's policies. The impression is that the "strong dollar" phrase is a throw-away, or worse, cover for a weak-dollar policy."

Maureen Torrey, an 11th-generation farmer in the rural town of Elba, N.Y., has been losing sleep. Just as rows of cabbage and winter squash stand ready for harvest on her 11,000 acre farm, she can't find enough workers to bring in the crops. She needs about 350 workers and is 70 short of that number. "I wake up at 3:30 in the morning and my mind doesn't shut off," she says.
The problem, she says, is fear. Torrey Farms, a 14-crop vegetable farm located an hour east of Buffalo, has been raided twice since last October, when she says immigration officials kicked in the doors of workers' housing and apprehended 34. In August, officials arrested seven workers and 14 more fled the area. Amid continued talk of a federal crackdown on undocumented immigrants, she's afraid still more of her workforce will flee to less hostile terrain. With a population of about 9,000, the town of Elba, "Onion Capital of the World" to locals, may not have the manpower to replace them.

I was recently told by a young couple that they felt that there were instances where torture should be used. They expressed the view that if the torturing of one or even ten individuals can save thousands, then it should be condoned.
I asked them if they were aware of the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They said that they were. I told them that thousands of Americans died to make those documents and the concepts behind them. I continued that millions of Americans since then had been bloodied, myself included, to see to it that those documents are preserved in tact today. If you deny one individual his right to Habeus Corpus (to know with what he is charged) or send him out of the country to be tortured, you shred those documents and their precepts. If one individuals rights can be forfeited, then any individuals rights can be forfeited. If the people no longer have these rights then we are no longer free.I was recently told by a young couple that they felt that there were instances where... more

"The peak of world oil production, long predicted by Houston geo-physicist M. King Hubbert, is here. A recent study for the German-based Energy Watch Group states that oil production has peaked and predicts production continuing to fall by 50% by the year 2030. It's a graphic picture of 'extreme shortages" leading to wars and social breakdown."
Excellent post by the Existentialist Cowboy whose blog I can only highly recommend.

Another chunk of bad news for the music business, which further brings to mind other industries transformed by the mighty internet. When was the last time you used a travel agent? Bought a magazine? A map? Used WebMD instead of calling a doctor/nurse? Picked up the Yellow pages?
I don't mean to sound alarmist, just raising the idea that the music business is not the only industry which will be transformed by the web. They all will... eventually.Another chunk of bad news for the music business, which further brings to mind other... more

The international community had pushed for stronger sanctions against the burmese junta. Japan cuts millions of dollars in aid. big frickin deal. I think sanctions will force the country into deeper isolation and further threaten the livelihood of its citizens. Many of whom have been locked up after the protests. Plus, just because the EU, Japan, and the US decided to impose new sanctions, embargos, whatever... We are basically handing over the influence and power to countries like China and India to step in and fill the void in Burma, thus further lifting China's role as a developing world power.
So is this really a move forward to pushing for change or just a pacified attempt to keep the order of world politics moving right along?

The hard truth is that $53,000 a year doesn't cut it anymore in the Bay Area. Tens of thousands of working families in the region, even those with what many would consider decent-paying jobs, find a modestly comfortable standard of living is out of their reach.
A family of four in the Bay Area with two working adults must earn $77,069, equaling an hourly wage of $18.53, just to pay for basic necessities, a study released today calculates. The hard truth is that $53,000 a year doesn't cut it anymore in the Bay Area.... more
