Aside from its rain and coffee, Seattle, Washington is known for many things subversive, from Grunge music to the activist driven WTO riots. This region of America raised the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee. Today, there is a culture here that is only represented anonymously in the reclaimed public spaces of the city. Images dot the urban landscape in the typical street mediums that are used across the globe; spray paint, stickers, paste-ups, stencils, wheatpasting, posters, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing, installations, post-graffiti, mosaic tiling, murals, wood-blocking, LED art, reverse-graffiti and yard bombing.
You will see that these are not commercial enterprises or vandalism graffiti, but individual creative statements... something we can all relate to. Street art as a medium has been popularized internationally by the likes of Shepard Fairey, Banksy, D*Face, Paul Insect, Swoon, Twist, Neck face, Faile, Space Invader and WK Interact. It can take on many purposes and sometimes involves activism, phenomenology, repetition, attention capture, culture jamming, direct action, guerrilla messaging, propaganda, subvertising, decoration and territory claiming.
The following is a small window into this temporary world that's constantly being revised in a flux of new symbols. It's a snapshot of work on the Seattle streets over about a 3 year period, a visual capsule in time, not a comprehensive representation of Seattle street art and the people involved over the years. Some of the work only existed for a day before it was written over by other artists or removed by the city... a reminder that nothing is permanent, and control is an illusion in the chaos of a city. Enjoy.

< Previous: The Economic Benefits of... | Excited About My New Book Project March 15, 2011 : 4:28 PMFrom the press release:
(New York, March 15, 2011) -- Al Gore, the Nobel Prize winning and #1 bestselling author of An Inconvenient Truth and The Assault on Reason, will write a new yet-to-be- titled book on the political, social and economic forces that are shaping what America and the world will become in ensuing decades. From demographics to democracy, Gore plans to explore what he calls the drivers of global change, framing the international conversation about the future in fresh and provocative ways. Gore’s book is the first acquisition for Jon Meacham, Executive V.P., Executive Editor, since joining Random House this year, and is currently scheduled to be published in 2012. Susan Kamil, Publisher of Random House, announced the deal from the author’s agent Andrew Wylie of The Wylie Agency for World English, German and Spanish languages, first serial, audio, and e-book publication rights. Terms were not disclosed.
Of the acquisition, Jon Meacham said, “No one has done more to raise global awareness about climate change. Now, from social media to political extremism, Gore is turning his attention to an even broader array of issues. He has always discerned trends and truths before much of the rest of the world, and it will be an honor to work with him on this thoughtful, singular look over the horizon.” Commenting on the new book, Mr. Gore stated, “I am delighted to be working with Jon Meacham and Random House on my next book. With this new work, I hope to help start a conversation about the large-scale drivers of change that are defining and shaping our future—from the rapid development and integration of radically new technologies to the planet-changing impact of the climate crisis, to poverty, globalization, and the democratization of knowledge accompanying the emergence of a ubiquitous Internet linking ever more intelligent devices.”
Ms. Kamil said, “I’m ecstatic to have Al Gore on the Random House list. Random House has a tradition of publishing provocative non-fiction that contributes to the national dialogue. Mr. Gore’s book is a welcome addition to our list.”
Former Vice President Al Gore is currently the chairman of both Current TV and Generation Investment Management. He is a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Gore is on the board of Apple is the Chairman of the Alliance of Climate Protection. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976 and the U.S. Senate in 1984 and 1990, and served eight years as Vice President of the United States, from 1993 to 2001.
The Random House Publishing Group is a division of Random House, the world's largest trade-book publisher, whose parent company is Bertelsmann AG.

Phil Carlo, author of "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer," had his book optioned for a film adaptation by producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura.
After the option ran out, Bonaventura attempted to make the claim for another two weeks to pull together funding. And that's when Carlo discovered who would play one of the most feared mafia hitmen ever:
Channing Tatum.
The author quickly pulled out of the option simply due to Tatum.

Michael Pollan, author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food" recently wrote an article for the Huff Post on inspiring more Americans to grow their own food. He cites First Lady Michelle Obama's move to plant a kitchen garden at the White House serves as an example not seen since the days of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Pollan, who has written extensively about food cultivation from modern industrial agriculture to organic farms to modern hunting and gathering, says that more and more people are interested in growing their own food. However, many of the skills and local knowledge about food production have been lost or "bred out of modern life" and rediscovering them is the real task at hand. He outlines specific policy moves that could encourage people to grow their own food such as :
* Provide grants to towns and cities to build year-round indoor farmers' markets.
* Make food-safety regulations sensitive to scale and marketplace, so that small producers selling direct off the farm or at a farmers' market are not regulated as onerously as a multinational food manufacturer.
* Urge The U.S.D.A. to establish a Local Meat-Inspectors Corps to serve and support the local food processors that remain.
* Establish a Strategic Grain Reserve to prevent huge swings in commodity prices.
* Create incentives for hospitals and universities receiving federal funds to buy fresh local produce which would vastly expand regional agriculture and improve the diet of the millions of people these institutions feed.
I'm a big fan of Pollan. His chapter on mushroom gathering has inspired me to eat more fungi and become a mushroom hunter in my spare time. Food is so in right now.Michael Pollan, author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense... more

I saw Current's interview with Russel Brand and decided to get his new book. I wrote a review on the book, here's an excerpt to entice you.
His memoir, like the title denotes, weaves in and out of sexual escapades and drug addiction whimsically. Many of his stories, if looked through a different lens, would seem depraved and abject. But he’s able to distill these anecdotes to their comedic core. At one point, I casually glazed over a moment of pedophilia without realizing the egregious nature of what occured. A tutor molested him...

Marybeth Hamilton's In Search of the Blues recasts the elevation of the raw, "primitive" blues sound as a form of American orientalism. Hamilton deconstructs the myth of the solitary Delta-blues drifter, but ultimately focuses on the collectors and musicologists who idealized that lonesome figure. In the process, she opens up critical questions that are too often taken for granted when discussing the music's origins.

After this year's Frankfurt Book Fair closed up shop, a reporter called Rowohlt Verlag in Hamburg to find out if a book in its catalogue called "Ich Nicht" had found an English-language publisher.
The answer was no. The woman from the foreign rights department said it was a shame.
Agreed. Published in Germany 13 months ago, "Ich Nicht" is a memoir by the late Joachim Fest, author of the best-known German study of Hitler and a co-publisher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. It describes his father, his family and growing up in Nazi Germany. After this year's Frankfurt Book Fair closed up shop, a reporter called Rowohlt... more

"It wasn't a reckless obsession with liquor, drugs and gunplay that made the late Hunter S. Thompson the undisputed king of Gonzo journalism, his wife says. Instead, it was old-fashioned principles such as working hard and telling the truth, enlivened by the glee Thompson took from learning and from being right.
In her new book, "The Gonzo Way: A Celebration of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson," Thompson says her husband built his career with a tireless dedication to the craft of reporting, a keen awareness of his own shortcomings and his personal blend of patriotism: loving his country while mistrusting authority."

Arcamax.com will send a chapter a day from a classic book to your inbox, although, if you're looking for newer titles, you may want to hit the library or a bookstore. The avaliable titles from this service are all public domain and old.
Set up your computer to read your email aloud with a text-to-speech app, and you've got a book on tape of sorts. A very creepy, lifeless book on tape.

Even though it was first published in 1918, The Elements of Style, by William Strunk, Jr., still is considered by many to be the bedrock upon which all proper writing is created. The fine folks at bartleby.com, a great resource for all of you writers out there, have it on their site--for free. It's short, sweet, and to the point, like all good writing.
Still, the number one rule in my book is to write in a way that will make sense to your audience. Clarity trumps the rules. Take Winston Churchill's legendary response to being called out for ending a sentence with a preposition. As one version goes, he wrote, "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put."
I couldn't have said it better--or worse--if I tried.Even though it was first published in 1918, The Elements of Style, by William Strunk,... more

My favorite part:
"The Secret Service was teaching Cheney how to drive to evade terrorists by executing a 'J-turn.' Cheney, who had not driven a car in about two years, jammed the Chevy Camaro into reverse, hit the accelerator until he was going about 40 miles an hour, then slammed on the brakes in order to spin the car a full 180 degrees. Bohrer had mounted a camera on the windshield to record Cheney's face. The veep was expressionless throughout. 'It was as if he was taking a Sunday drive.'"
Lesson to terrorists: Be prepared for a Ronin-style car chase if you think you want to even get CLOSE to Cheney's car.My favorite part:
