So what's Activision's idea of a "greatest hit"? IGN has the first bits of the track listing from one of the publisher's seventeen Guitar Hero games for 2009, Guitar Hero Greatest Hits.
The following eight tracks out of the 48 songs (all masters, ripped from Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rock's the 80s, and Guitar Hero III) have been confirmed:
"Barracuda" by Heart
"I Love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
"I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister
"Killer Queen" by Queen
"Killing in the Name" by Rage Against The Machine
"Nothin' But A Good Time" by Poison
"Them Bones" by Alice in Chains
"Through the Fire and Flames" by Dragonforce
The tracks have been adapted for the four instrument set up, including the Expert+ drum mode that debuts in this month's Guitar Hero: Metallica. The game will also feature new "around the world" venues, including "The Amazon Rain Forest," "The Polar Ice Caps," and "The Grand Canyon."
Now on to the bad (bordering on idiotic) news: while the game will feature support for GH Tunes (including the ability to download user-created tracks), you won't be able to use any of your existing Guitar Hero World Tour downloadable content with Greatest Hits. Furthermore, there will be no way to transfer the Greatest Hits songs for play in World Tour (a la the Rock Band 1 to Rock Band 2 transition).
Guitar Hero Greatest Hits is scheduled for a June release; it has an MSRP of $59.99 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and $49.99 and $39.99 for Wii and PlayStation 2 respectively. Yup.

"Gibson Guitar's patent infringement suit against Activision has been dismissed by a U.S. District Court in California in a ruling that describing the action as "bordering on the frivolous."
Gibson launched the lawsuit against Activision in early 2008 over claims that Guitar Hero violated a patent for a "virtual reality music system." Prior to the suit, Gibson had sent a letter to Activision complaining about the violation and demanding compensation, which Activision declined to offer. In fact, instead of making a deal to avoid legal expenses, Activision strongly denied the claim and filed a counter-suit of its own seeking a summary dismissal, saying it would "confront this and any other efforts by Gibson to wrongfully interfere with Activision's relationship with its customers and its consumers.""Gibson Guitar's patent infringement suit against Activision has been... more

Lynyrd Skynyrd might not be the world's most intellectual rock band, but at least they can spell their own name. Which is more than we can say for whoever designed the cover for the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica game.
Rolling Stone caught the grammatical gaffe while checking out the game's cover art, which proudly displays the names of all the hard-rocking artists that grace the game's soundtrack. While bands like Judas Priest and Samhain enjoyed correct spelling, just off to the left of the "Hero" is the hitherto unknown band "Lynyrd Skynrd," whom we presume is some sort of Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band, minus a Y.
Guitar Hero: Metallica is the second game in the series to be based on the music of one particular group, following last year's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. No word yet on whether or not Guitar Hero publisher Activision plans on fixing the spelling error before the game launches on March 29, but we certainly hope they do. Haven't Skynyrd fans suffered enough?

Funny in a not so funny way ............! j/k
Comedian Zack Scott gives us a great demo of some of the features of Microsoft's new automatic songwriting program.
Microsoft Songsmith is a computer program, recently released from the trial phase, which automatically generates music, using a computer code that will accompany a sang vocal track, or several other inputs. This software could allow songwriters or musicans to create quick notes of song ideas, from even just a very rough vocal track as Mr. Scott here shows us !!!Funny in a not so funny way ............! j/k

Guitar Hero + Nes emulator = frickin' awesomeness.
Kent Hansen and Andreas Pedersen have created 'D-Pad Hero' which is a NES emulation game that plays Guitar Hero on an the original old-skool Nintendo console.
There's only four tracks at the moment, but me thinks there's gotta be more goodness on its way. The tracks so far are “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, “Harder Better Faster Stronger,” “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “The Swing Of Things.”Guitar Hero + Nes emulator = frickin' awesomeness.

Whats Next? Polka Band?!
Activision's DJ Hero, a widely-rumored music game supported by a turntable peripheral, is set to release this year, says CEO Bobby Kotick.
Speaking at the Davos World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Kotick responded to CNBC reporters' questions about innovation in the games business by touting the upcoming product.
"We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year, which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively, spin discs and mix on," he explained, although he offered no further detail on released dates or any other related information.Whats Next? Polka Band?!

Finally, after months of rumours, rock legends Metallica have revealed the tracklist for their sponsered version of Guitar Hero, the creatively titled, Guitar Hero: Metallica.
The game is to be packed with 49 songs, 28 of which are Metallica originals, with the other 21 being by artists who have toured with or influenced the band.
Metallica also revealed that the game will have a hardcore 'Expert+' setting as well as feature a host of classic venues such as the L.A. Forum, Tushino Airfield and London's Hammersmith Odeon.

The tongue-and-cheekiness of the research aside, musicians have actually hurt themselves head-banging. A 15-year-old drummer in his neighborhood band suffered an aneurysm in his cervical vertebral artery, according to a 1991 case report in the journal Pediatric Neurosurgery, and Evanescence guitarist Terry Balsamo had a stroke three years ago that his docs blamed on his head-banging tendencies.

Despite the fact that rock video games are still flying off shelves this holiday season, analysts have begun to wonder whether the market for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band has reached its peak. In November, sales from Guitar Hero games were down 19 percent from the previous November, while Rock Band experienced a 65 percent increase thanks to supply constraints that stifled its sales last year.
Insiders believe part of the problem is that the franchises’ seemingly never-ending assembly line of new games is starting to exhaust consumers: World Tour is the sixth title in the Guitar Hero franchise since 2005 and a Metallica-inspired game is due out next year. Plus, the high cost of the full band kit for both GH and RB might turn off some consumers who are concerned about the recession. “I think the entire genre is definitely reaching its peak. With Guitar Hero, there’s been so many releases. Every couple of months there’s something new on this thing, and after a point consumers start to wonder what’s going on here,” said video game market analyst Jesse Divnich.Despite the fact that rock video games are still flying off shelves this holiday... more

While it’s not exactly a secret that Neversoft is planning to release a Metallica themed Guitar Hero title, it’s never really been fully confirmed. That is, not until this weekend when Metallica confirmed it themselves.
"Yes, we know, it's the worst kept secret in rock-n-roll but we're here now to finally confirm that there will indeed be an all-Metallica Guitar Hero game released in the first half of 2009," the band writes on their website. "Guitar Hero Metallica allows you to play as us in either single instrument or band career game modes in your choice of some famous settings (Tushino Airfield anyone?) or new venues with in the round staging."
The band even took the time to share some details about the track listing and an innovative new piece of hardware. "Included are 28 Metallica songs along with a few from some of our buddies like as Alice in Chains, the Foo Fighters, Slayer, Machine Head and Queen. There is also an all new Expert+ difficulty setting featuring two bass drum kick pedals, along with all the gameplay modes from Guitar Hero World Tour."
That’s all the band had to offer, but it definitely sounds promising. To conclude, the band says, "Over the next few months, we're going to be updating you with track listings, more features, of course how and when you can get the game, and some cool previews of the game right here on the site. As you've heard us say before, keep checking back for more details!"While it’s not exactly a secret that Neversoft is planning to release a... more

Despite the fact that Activision has yet to officially acknowledge the existence of DJ Hero, it appears we've already moved into the artist announcements phase. BigShot reports (via Kotaku) that popular Dutch DJ Tiesto will contribute music to the game, a fact Tiesto himself announced in his newsletter.
"We are proud to announce that Tiesto has teamed up with the game developer Activision and their latest project DJ Hero," the newsletter reads. Tiesto also had some positive words of his own to say about his involvement with the game. "I am very excited about this! I think this is a great way to introduce people into DJing," he said. "Maybe they realize it's not as easy as they think. I am sure this brings new fans to the scene; dance music is not far from hip-hop for example. Hopefully the music I have composed appeals to all kinds of fans!"
Just how extensive his involvement will be isn't specified, but then, there's a lot about this game we still don't know. Going only on a few reports from anonymous sources, the most anyone's gathered is that it'll supposedly ship with a controller that resembles a small DJ deck, it'll feature a soundtrack comprised of mash-ups, it'll have note-tracking gameplay that unsurprisingly sounds similar to Guitar Hero, and it'll have a multiplayer mode where someone can jam along with a guitar controller.
If unofficial information keeps coming at this rate, though, all that'll soon be left for Activision to do is announce the thing, and ship it to retailers.Despite the fact that Activision has yet to officially acknowledge the existence of DJ... more
