Toyota has launched a media campaign to bolster its reputation for quality as nervous customers confront dealers across the country about faulty gas pedal systems.
(Krisher, T., & Shipkowski, B., 2010, January 31, para. 1)
Crisis-management experts said Sunday that the recall of millions of cars and trucks isn't the Japanese auto maker's only problem: its message to Toyota owners — delivered in full-page ads Sunday in 20 major newspapers — isn't as clear and reassuring as it needs to be.
(Krisher, T., & Shipkowski, B., 2010, January 31, para. 2)
Toyota's black-and-white ads Sunday characterized the halt in sales and production as a "temporary pause" to put customers "first." The ads don't give details on how the pedals will be fixed or when customers can expect a remedy.
(Krisher, T., & Shipkowski, B., 2010, January 31, para. 5)
"They are trying to do the right thing," said Alexander Edwards, president of automotive research group Strategic Vision, of the ads. "But what's going on isn't stated very clearly and that causes more uneasiness with customers."
(Krisher, T., & Shipkowski, B., 2010, January 31, para. 7)

U.S. safety regulators are satisfied with a Toyota Motor Corp. plan for fixing an accelerator problem that is part of a widening global recall and unprecedented sales and production halt, a government official said on Saturday.
(Crawley, J., 2010, January 30, para. Intro)
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) engineers have reviewed Toyota's proposal for preventing gas pedals in eight models from sticking and have raised no objections, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has yet to be publicly announced.
(Crawley, J., 2010, January 30, para. 1)
Toyota President Akio Toyoda apologized for the recall, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Friday. "We're extremely sorry to have made customers uneasy," Toyoda said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in comments that were broadcast by NHK. Toyoda last commented publicly on the matter in October, when he expressed regret for the deaths of four people in a California crash linked to the defects last year.

Toyota has built up a reputation in American for reliability, safety, and overall quality. While many customers and auto reviewers have noticed a slip in interior quality of newer Toyota vehicles in recent years, the Japanese automaker has so much goodwill built up with the public that such findings have done little to tarnish the company's image.
However, the latest news coming from the Toyota camp threatens to take quite a bit of wind out of the automaker's sails. What was once thought just to be just a problem with improperly installed floor mats has turned into a much more complicated issue. Last week, Toyota issued a recall for 2.3 million vehicles to fix problems with the accelerator pedals.
Yesterday, however, Toyota took the drastic model to announced the suspension of sales for eight vehicle models in the U.S. -- effective February 1 -- including the best selling car in America: the Toyota Camry. "Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats," the company said in a press release. "There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position."Toyota has built up a reputation in American for reliability, safety, and overall... more

Toyota Motor Co. said Tuesday it was suspending U.S. sales of eight recalled vehicle models to fix accelerator pedals that stick, the latest quality problem to confront the world's No. 1 automaker.
As part of the plan, Toyota said it was halting production at five manufacturing facilities for the week of Feb. 1 "to assess and coordinate activities." There are 2.3 million vehicles involved in the recall, which was announced last week.
"This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized," said Bob Carter, Toyota's group vice president and general manager.
The Japanese automaker says the sales suspension includes the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia.

Well, it's 2010 and according to Toyota we should have robots in the form of Asimo (Toyota's robot helper in the picture) and others to make us cups of tea, bring us breakfast in bed or whatever other menial tasks we require of them. I can see how that would be helpful for lazy sundays etc. but what about the declining population situation Japan are facing where they very soon may need to rely on Robots to make up a huge percentage of their workforce and even have them as lovers. It may amaze you to learn that in 2003, there were an estimated 600,000 'household' robots in the world... of course, these were mainly robot vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers. Today, there are over four million. As you'd expect, Japan is leading the way in robotics, competing against American and European companies to build humanoid robots to act as domestic helpers. 30 percent of the world's robots are constructed and operational in Japan, however the EU is not far behind.

The online ad, entitled "Clean Getaways," is for the Toyota Yaris, a small car mainly sold to young women, according to the TheAge.com. The video, which is full of sexual innuendos and suggestive double entendres, begins with a young man arriving to pick up his date and telling the girl's father at the door, "I'm here to take Jennifer's virginity out tonight."
From there the young man reels off such lines as "I hope I haven't come too prematurely," "it has traction control for when it gets a bit slippery and wet," and "I'll have her on her back by 11, I promise."

Toyota Australia has launched the first ready-for-sale hybrid vehicle to be built in Australia.
The Hybrid Camry increases consumer choice by giving motorists the option of buying an Australian-made hybrid.
It expands Australia's manufacturing capacity today, and provides a platform for future growth.
It gives us a practical way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - and to do it right now.
It is a clear sign of Toyota's commitment to this country, and to the renewal of the Australian car industry.
The Hybrid Camry will be around 30 per cent more fuel efficient and produce around 30 per cent fewer emissions than a standard Toyota Camry.
At least 10,000 vehicles will be produced each year, mostly for sale at home,
with around 300 to be exported to New Zealand.
Production of the Hybrid Camry is expected to inject around $90 million into
the Victorian and South Australian automotive parts industries and support
jobs at Toyota's suppliers.
More than 50 hybrid-unique parts will be sourced from local suppliers.
The Altona plant is one of only five Toyota plants in the world manufacturing
the Hybrid Camry.
The Australian Government is supporting the production of the vehicle with
$35 million in funding from the $1.3 billion Green Car Innovation Fund, a key
element of A New Car Plan for a Greener Future.Toyota Australia has launched the first ready-for-sale hybrid vehicle to be built in... more

If you think cellphones have become overbearingly complex, look away now. A partnership of tech companies and content providers, known as the ng Connect Program, has revealed a prototype "LTE Connected Car," which, as you might surmise, combines 4G mobile broadband connectivity with a bunch of cloud-sourced facilities, such as video on demand, audio libraries, and multiplayer gaming. It can also serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot, connect directly to home automation or monitoring systems, and probably cook you scrambled eggs if you ask nicely. A Toyota Prius serves as the guinea pig for this new concept.

Toyota has created two flower species that absorb nitrogen oxides and take heat out of the atmosphere. The flowers, derivatives of the cherry sage plant and the gardenia, were specially developed for the grounds of Toyota's Prius plant in Toyota City, Japan. The sage derivative's leaves have unique characteristics that absorb harmful gases, while the gardenia's leaves create water vapour in the air, reducing the surface temperature of the factory surrounds and, therefore, reducing the energy needed for cooling, in turn producing less carbon dioxide (CO2).
