Tonight I was asked if I am a photographer and my answer was no, but I wasn't asked by an adult, it was a kid. She then told me that I am in fact a photographer because I take pictures. I suppose she is right, the problem is I am a photographer who is self taught and as such I do not have an audience. I've been studying the art of photography my whole life, but just recently I've devoted my life to being on the move and taking photos. I document nearly every day now, in an effort to learn my camera better as well as tell my story. At this point I need to find a way to continue my education, whether it be through my project twathorse or through attending art school. Either way, I'm documenting the journey, it is here for you to follow, and I assure you it will be a fun ride.Tonight I was asked if I am a photographer and my answer was no, but I wasn't... more

The ways of yesterday are the ways of today. I'm enrolled in the Jobs Now 3 program which isn't like the original Jobs Now program where you could get a job and your employer would be repaid your salary. Now it's only a $5000 endowment to the person who hires you, but it's still not bad. There is a catch now though. You have to go through the Career Development Center where they try and find you a job.The ways of yesterday are the ways of today. I'm enrolled in the Jobs Now 3... more

Anyone wishing to enter the profession must overindulge in a glut of reading and studying. Not surprisingly, many books on the medical sciences haven risen to prominence in both classrooms and offices alike. Whether textbooks, references, diagnostic manuals, popular science literature or something completely different, these reads have contributed greatly to the understanding of how the human body and mind work (and work together).

But how important is it for middle school kids to keep reading? British politician Michael Gove suggests that eleven-year-olds should read 50 books a year. This post shows one parent's reaction to Gove’s statement and also provides a list of 50 great books for young readers.

In science fiction movies, when robots talk to one another it's not really a "language" as much as a stream of beeps or long strings of binary. Even so, one group of Australian researchers have managed to teach robots to do something that, until now, was the reserve of humans and a few other animals: they've taught them how to invent and use spoken language.
The goal of the research is to understand how language evolves and develops naturally over time. Since it's impossible to find two humans who have no language and experiment with them to see how they invent one, the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology researchers decided to use robots instead. The robots, called LingoDroids, are equipped with microphones, speakers, cameras, range finders, and sonar that they use to map their surroundings and speak to one another. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/42967-lingodroid-project-robots-taught-to-invent-own-languageIn science fiction movies, when robots talk to one another it's not really a... more

Blacks in Cuba: A look at being black in Cuba and issues of race, racism, and their reflection in society and everyday life in the island nation.
In Cuba Professor Gates finds out how the culture, religion, politics and music of this island are inextricably linked to the huge amount of slave labor imported to produce its enormously profitable 19th century sugar industry, and how race and racism have fared since Fidel Castro's Communist revolution in 1959Blacks in Cuba: A look at being black in Cuba and issues of race, racism, and their... more

The work of mathematical geniuses can inspire intimidation or even fear into the hearts of aspiring students. And who can blame them? Often given a barrage of principles and functions with little to no real-world application offered, it's no wonder why so many students, math majors and non-majors alike, have such trouble wrapping their minds around mathematical ideas that originated centuries ago. Rarely will a math class ever provide any sort of context to the mathematical concepts taught beyond the concepts themselves. Rarely will students ever receive an insight into the person who created the idea. Sure, it may not solve all math woes, but it could definitely help foster a better understanding of so many students' least favorite subject.

Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci turns 70 today, with 45+ years of masterful contributions to cinema. As the above quote suggests, Bertolucci has spent his career fighting Hollywood cliches and hackneyed plots. He strongly resists any kind of censorship, and he refuses to play it safe. This is what makes Bertolucci worth studying in film classes, worth admiring above the rest.Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci turns 70 today, with 45+ years of masterful... more
