"Twitter followers in Japan have demonstrated their fervor for the social networking tool, setting a world record in generating “tweets per second” after a recent World Cup game. Now, creative merchants are coming up with books and blogs that connect Twitter with another national infatuation: Learning English.
A quick search on Amazon.com brings up seven books that encourage people to study English by tweeting. “Twitter in English – The Complete Guide,” suggests readers could heighten their exposure to English used by real native speakers by following frequent-tweeter celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Paris Hilton. Followers recently got treated to this rich phrase from Ms. Hilton: “Just had a delicious dinner. So full and tired, can’t wait to get in bed and go to sleep.”
For writing practice, they can choose from 330 sample English phrases, including genuine expressions of joy (It was sooooo good!) to a show of determination (Gonna do the laundry now.)
The Japanese have long been known for their voracious attempts in mastering the English language. Teenagers watched “Sesame Street” to brush up their listening skills. President Barack Obama’s inauguration speech got turned into books, CDs and a one-hour workshop in which students recited the entire speech, line by line.
Twitter is a friendly tool even for the easily intimidated, says Masato Homma, chief executive of a Tokyo-based consulting company called Learnology Co. and author of the book “How To Study English With Twitter — Connect With the World.”
“With 140 characters, you’re lucky if you can get 30 words out of it. That’s one long sentence or two short ones,” he says. “There’s no need to worry about grammar. Come up with a jazzy adjective and you’re basically done.”
Mr. Homma suggests students first try retweeting others and adding simple comments such as “Super!” and “Wonderful!” Once they build up their confidence, they can throw out questions like “What does this mean?” and someone is bound to come back with an answer, helping keep students motivated, he says."
