The College Adventure - IS College General Studies Beneficial

The College Adventure

I begun to pounder the reason on why I ended up enrolling in college and I have really not figured out the reasoning behind it. Was it the lack of the piece of paper for knowing the industry I am apart of or is it something more sub mental where I am just so bored from working or being at home I needed to get out of my normal everyday activities? As I sit here and do my English homework I have noticed I am learning things I never even learned in traditional education in Grade School or High School, I almost find it a bit disturbing that me being 35 years old am learning verbs and subjects now rather than when I was in high school, so much so that it is making my brain have a education overload. However as I sit here and do homework I still have this sub conscience feeling I will never use half the stuff I am learning now. Do I find it worth wild or worth it? Yes I feel some things could be beneficial but other things I am learning are a complete waste of time on the actual subjects I need to learn.

College is very interesting though I see a lot of people who are very excited about different subjects or ALL subjects but you have the few who are in college just for getting the paper on what they have learned mostly "on hands" me being one of them just getting that paper that says hey this person is good at "computers" not getting a degree on math, English, social studies, arts or any "required" base class you have to take just to get the degree in whatever subject you want to take and not required to take. So it makes you ponder is that the college way of making money and revenue from consumers or state federal aid programs? You would think the college system would refine classes to whatever field you want to go into not as this class is required, that class is required and this class is required just to get that degree. I have no personal problems taking them everyone could use a little more education, however being able to pass them classes is a whole new ballgame, you have interest in something else not currently what you are required to take so I can see how a lot of people "drop" out of classes or get bad grades to some degree.

For me personally I know my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning different subjects and my weakness is English And Math, not because I do not like them but I cannot retain them mentally there is so much theory to each of them subjects my brain just overloads there is no logical way for me to understand both of them subjects since I can look over a problem and have no foggy idea how to figure it out. The teachers are GREAT it has nothing to do with teaching style or expertise it is just something that does not click correctly on a mental level I guess I use much more of the right side of the brain than the left side of the brain. As for English I can say it is getting better for me to understand some things, other things not so much as in for example a thesis paper I understand the structure and layout but making everything put in properly is something that just does not click. I find it strange that someone going into Computer Information Systems would even need to learn all that English since well frankly coding we never use actual English we use a language that would make any English teacher go WTF is that code you have there where is the verbs and subjects and full words.

As for my other classes I do find them beneficial as in Database & Database Management and also Micro Computers, I had interest in business class but the teacher was not raising any education bars in that class and frankly she was just very rude to students and was not very responsive or accepting to questions about what she was teaching so rather than wasting my time with her I just dropped her class and I will be taking business class over again next semester with another teacher someone I know who has all there screws together that came from the business world and is a teacher at the college. But even with the classes I do like I still have to take these unrelated classes next semester that will be of no benefit to me (personally or business wise) for the field I am getting into and I find that a complete waste of time and frankly money.

I could see if It was more structured to what field you are getting into as in ok you need this class (for this reason) that class for (that reason) and this class for (whatever reason) but just for the college to say you need X number of these classes to achieve this status frankly I am not buying that, there has to be something more to this then "we are just giving you foundation classes" to help you learn all this just to get a degree in that. You look at all the people who have gone to these top notch colleges around the country and even them they are having difficulty finding work in the field they have very high expertise in, sure granted due to demographical parts of the country they might live might hinder them more employment however you would think that anyone in whatever field they have degree's in could get a job damn near anywhere. The problem would be someone having to relocate someplace else they might not want to live, or have personal or family ties someplace else.

So after reviewing that part that is why I think colleges make you take all these other classes that might not be the subject you need to take but just in that case you cannot find a job in the field you have a degree in you can find another field of work that you might distaste or dislike since you have the mandatory required learning of them subjects in college. So is that beneficial or is that just a way for colleges to make money? You spend tons of money on books you will never use ever again and you spend so much for a education but is it worth it as in whatever subjects college requires you to take rather then the subject you have a degree in?
