A few years ago, Jestina Clayton started a hair braiding business in her home in Centerville, Utah. The business let her stay home with her kids, and in good months, she made enough to pay for groceries. She even put an ad on a local website. Then one day she got an email from a stranger who had seen the ad.
“It is illegal in the state of Utah to do any form of extensions without a valid cosmetology license,” the e-mail read. “Please delete your ad, or you will be reported.”
To get a license, Jestina would have to spend more than a year in cosmetology school. Tuition would cost $16,000 dollars or more.
On today’s show: Why it’s illegal to braid hair without a license in Utah. And why that rule — and hundreds of others like it in states all around the country — are a disaster for the U.S. economy.

In these uncertain days, when we embrace risk and realize there is no such thing as security (such as working in a seemingly stable job), we are, in fact, more secure. If we aren’t seduced into thinking that we’re ever safe, we’ll be better equipped to survive. Accepting the fact that job security is a myth translates into the need for us to continually evolve, to adapt, and to continually form ourselves into well-rounded Renaissance thinkers and doers. Yeah, yeah … the Barcalounger beckons, I know. We want to rest. I get it, believe me … but rest isn’t the point, or at least it shouldn’t be.In these uncertain days, when we embrace risk and realize there is no such thing as... more

A man who wanted to prove that his body armor would really protect him put it to the ultimate test by firing a round point blank into his own stomach.
In video uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, a man is seen wearing a bullet-proof vest with the word “security” on the back.
“We got a Glock Model 20 10mm,” the man says as he approaches the camera inside his untidy double-wide trailer. “I got a Hornady 200 grain hollow-point round in here.”
“I done psyched myself out on this already. So, I’m trying to get my nerves to do it,” he admitted.
The video shows him backing up, putting the barrel of the pistol flat against his stomach and placing his thumb his on the trigger.
Seconds later, he grimaces and fires.
“Fuck!” the man exclaims as paces around his living room. “Oh, shit! Oh, I’d hate to be hit multiple times like that. That fucking hurt.”
“I got American Body Armor, the best on level IIIA,” he explained. “But the panel I got on here is made by Second Chance Level II. Go ahead and cut that shit off.”
Gizmodo noted that the video was “further proof that handguns should be illegal or that the human race doesn’t deserve to exist.”
“Surely this daring experiment should have ended not with extreme pain, but with our bearded hero deflecting the projectile, ramming his head into a keg to celebrate, and then happily passing out in a pool of fluids, stench and sawdust.”

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney suggested to a group of business people in Michigan on Thursday that entrepreneurs should ask their parents for money instead of using loans from the federal government.
In a speech to the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce, the former Massachusetts governor blasted the Obama administration for trying to jump start renewable energy with government loans to companies like Solyndra.
“When the president says I’m going to take your money and give it to Tesla and Fisker, two new car companies, which by the way, Fisker now builds their cars in Finland, that’s not good,” he explained. “When he takes $500 million and puts it into Solyndra, that’s not good. That’s not good for American enterprise and innovation.”
“The president wanted to encourage solar energy and he thought by taking $500 million and giving it as a loan to a company would do that,” Romney continued. “It did just the opposite. Not understanding the private enterprise system explains why he doesn’t understand that.
“Because my guess is that there are about 100 or more entrepreneurs in America that have ideas for solar energy, and they’re trying to go out and get funding for their business, for their startup for their ideas. Going to venture capitalists and angels and their parents to try and get funding.”
Although the Obama administration did approve funds for Solyndra, the loan process began under President George W. Bush’s administration.

A five-story building in New York City was raided by police this week, revealing that the entire structure was being used as a multi-tiered marijuana farm.
Police said that four of the floors appeared to be designated to individual stages of the plants’ growth, with the most mature on the top floor.
The building also had expensive filtration and watering systems to keep plants healthy and nosy neighbors about their own business, according to NBC New York.
Officers recovered almost 600 marijuana plants, along with 75 pounds of buds that had been prepared for sale. In total, some 1,550 pounds of illegal plants were pulled out of the building.
Three men, ages 23-25, were arrested in the raid. It is not clear if they were solely responsible.

Midway through his freshman year at Harvard University, Ben Yu felt like Harvard's core curriculum kept getting in the way of his other interests. So he dropped out.
Starting in January, Yu, 19, began doing the things he never had time for when he was enrolled in college -- he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and went caving in Kentucky. He also applied to become a Thiel Fellow.
Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook, created the Thiel Foundation. Last fall, it announced a new fellowship program: It would give 20 people under the age of 20 $100,000 to drop out of school and become world-changing visionaries.

Alright, so tonight I decided to really put my ideas together in a more entertaining film. This is the culmination of tons of work. I've been building my ideas into a website as well as trying to expand beyond just the web. I want to hit the road and tell a story while telling the stories of other people. I want to use product placement to help me make it from Kansas City to Toronto. I'm hoping people will want to give me free clothes to support their brand, free food to eat at their restaurant, my ultimate goal is to find someone that has a car and wants to drive me to Toronto for the journey of a lifetime. If you're interested in supporting my cause in any way, just respond here. I'm on a quest to find answers.
Should marijuana be legal?
Where should I move?
How can I make a living doing what I enjoy doing?
What is the easiest way for me to build a name for myself?
Why should anyone listen to me?Alright, so tonight I decided to really put my ideas together in a more entertaining... more

Well, since I've quit my job I've been trying to come up with new ideas to help promote the businesses I like in order to propel myself further as a photographer as well as a supporter of small businesses. I've come up with a simple plan for now. The more people I get involved the bigger and better my plan will become. This is just a starting point, but by no means is in an ending point. I want to help local businesses improve their digital image and in turn improve their own business.Well, since I've quit my job I've been trying to come up with new ideas to... more

Well, I quit Best Buy and now I'm working as an entrepreneur and plan to build some great things. I had really hoped that I might get something of a response from Best Buy, but I wanted to update this site and remind the people working for big business that you do not have a voice, you are a number, you are a wage slave. Today is the day of the small business, the sustainable business, the day of the people that start something out of passion rather than out of passion for profit. I made my stand against being treated unjustly, now I'm working to fight for a cause. I need help though, anything you've got to offer is awesome. Let's hold companies accountable for their actions and make them a little more honest.Well, I quit Best Buy and now I'm working as an entrepreneur and plan to build... more
