ACTA = Global Internet Censorship - Now Even Foreign Governments Will Be Able To Have Your Website Shut DownGlobal Internet censorship is here. SOPA and PIPA have been stopped (at least for now) in the United States, but a treaty known as ACTA (the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is far worse than either of them. ACTA was quietly signed by Barack Obama back on October 1st, 2011 and most Americans have never even heard of it. But it could mean the end of the Internet as we know it. This new treaty gives foreign governments and copyright owners incredibly broad powers. If you are alleged to have violated a copyright, your website can be shut down without a trial and police may even show up at your door to take you to prison. It doesn't even have to be someone in the United States that is accusing you. It could just be a foreign government or a copyright owner halfway across the world that alleges that you have violated a copyright. It doesn't matter. So far, the U.S., the EU and seven other nations have signed on to ACTA, and the number of participants is expected to continue to grow. The "powers that be" are obsessed with getting Internet censorship one way or another. The open and free Internet that you and I have been enjoying for all these years is about to change, and not for the better.Global Internet censorship is here. PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting “creativity”. The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites; they just have to convince a judge that the site is “dedicated to copyright infringement.” The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year. That’s for a fix that won’t work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.
This piece includes a video about SOPA.

As allowed, I placed links in blog entries to blogs where either full videos and transcripts of TYT show segments could be seen since Current TV does not provide such (only 3 min blurbs). I did this to not only promote the message and mission of TYT but also to provide a reference source to other internet bloggers writing about the topics featured on its shows. The censors of Current indiscriminately removed my links on the grounds that they constituted spam. Spam?! I am promoting the show and its mission as well as providing reference material, and the censors are removing the content.
If Current TV paid a transcriptionist to transcribe TYT's shows and published them on their website like MSNBC and other news websites, I wouldn't need to devote hours, for which I am not being paid, to do so. And if Current TV published the entire shows on videos on their own website, I would not have to spend hours recording and editing their programs to make this material available to its audience.
This censorship policy is an insult to the audience of TYT and should be corrected. I thought Current was opposed to SOPA and PIPA. Or is it merely opposed to internet censorship on other websites? As allowed, I placed links in blog entries to blogs where either full videos and... more

The Federal Reserve Plans To Identify "Key Bloggers" And Monitor Billions Of Conversations About The Fed On Facebook, Twitter, Forums And BlogsThe Federal Reserve wants to know what you are saying about it. In fact, the Federal Reserve has announced plans to identify "key bloggers" and to monitor "billions of conversations" about the Fed on Facebook, Twitter, forums and blogs. This is yet another sign that the alternative media is having a dramatic impact. As first reported on Zero Hedge, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has issued a "Request for Proposal" to suppliers who may be interested in participating in the development of a "Sentiment Analysis And Social Media Monitoring Solution". In other words, the Federal Reserve wants to develop a highly sophisticated system that will gather everything that you and I say about the Federal Reserve on the Internet and that will analyze what our feelings about the Fed are. Obviously, any "positive" feelings about the Fed would not be a problem. What they really want to do is to gather information on everyone that views the Federal Reserve negatively. It is unclear how they plan to use this information once they have it, but considering how many alternative media sources have been shut down lately, this is obviously a very troubling sign. The Federal Reserve wants to know what you are saying about it. In fact, the Federal... more

We know of sites tracking and despite denials to the contrary Facebook has been tracking information.
Google/Yahoo have also been accused of retaining information for a month.
Now the tracking seems to be done through the ‘Like’ Button.
Safety conscious Internet users are likely to avoid using this Button, thus denying the Links traffic.
Unwittingly the sites are resorting to actions that instead of increasing traffic are indirectly contributing to reduction in traffic.
Of course they, for the time being, might have temporary monetary advantage by using this information by selling personal information.
If Internet users become more Security conscious, the information sharing sites may be cooking their own goose unless they keep on devising new methods to steal personal information.
As an aside, why is it that negative news about Facebook is being brought out systematically in torrents of late?
