The Bush-Cheney administration’s Department of Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have collectively set guidelines that recommend—in the event of a “pandemic” or mass crisis—that the elderly, the sick, the severely injured, and the poor will be denied life-saving medical treatment. The Bush-Cheney administration’s Department of Homeland Security, the Centers... more

...Congressional critics want more assurances of legality... The Bush administration said yesterday that it plans to start using the nation's most advanced spy technology for domestic purposes soon, rebuffing challenges by House Democrats over the idea's legal authority.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department will activate his department's new domestic satellite surveillance office in stages, starting as soon as possible with traditional scientific and homeland security activities -- such as tracking hurricane damage, monitoring climate change and creating terrain maps.
Sophisticated overhead sensor data will be used for law enforcement once privacy and civil rights concerns are resolved, he said. The department has previously said the program will not intercept communications.

The Department of Homeland Security, citing an "emergency clause" has circumvented congressional oversight to allow U.S. businesses to hire more foreign workers. Specifically, students who have attended American schools for 29 months can now be hired in the U.S. without first obtaining an H-1B visa, the visa usually needed for highly-skilled workers, such as computer programmers and supermodels. The Department of Homeland Security, citing an "emergency clause" has... more

Audit finds U.S. anti-terror statistics INFLATED: Marriage fraud, other NON-TERROR issues counted in (or...as "terrorist") numbers since 9/11
"If the Department of Justice can't even get their own books in order, how are we supposed to have any confidence they are doing the job they should be?" said Schumer, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees the department. "Whether this is just an accounting error or an attempt to pad terror prosecution statistics for some other reason, the Department of Justice of all places should be classifying cases for what they are, not what they want us to think them to be."
A November 2001 federal crackdown on security breaches at airports, for example, yielded arrests on immigration and false document charges, but no evidence of terrorist activity. Nonetheless, the attorneys' office lumped them in with other anti-terror cases since they were investigated by federal Joint Terrorism Task Forces or with other counterterror measures.
Other examples, according to the audit, included:
* Charges against a marriage-broker for being paid to arrange six fraudulent marriages between Tunisians and U.S. citizens.
* Prosecution of a Mexican citizen who falsely identified himself as another person in a passport application.
* Charges against a suspect for dealing firearms without a license. The prosecutor handling the case told auditors it should not have been labeled as anti-terrorism.
"We do not agree that law enforcement efforts such as these should be counted as anti-terrorism," the audit concluded.Audit finds U.S. anti-terror statistics INFLATED: Marriage fraud, other NON-TERROR... more

"It's mystifying that this out-of-control situation continues to exist, yet on other parts of the border the Department of Homeland Security seems willing to flex its muscles to get what it wants," said Daniel R. Patterson, southwest director for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility and a former BLM ecologist.
"Border security should certainly trump the off-road industry," he said. "But it's not clear that's the case with this administration." yadayadayada...
...my take from this story (at least indirectly =D yet more importantly)...there's almost nothing to fear but fear itself. as it's so plainly apparent we have more to "worry" about with simple smuggling, I just can't help but wonder how these smugglers don't BEG the question, wheretf are the "terrorists"??? Shouldn't we be "running" into them??? I haven't seen nor heard any account since the government's 9/11 blow job of any seriously incontravertible terrorist attacking U.S. civilians. And couldn't they come across just as easily as these smugglers??? As suicide-missioning up their own civilians to "Allah," they've literally nothing to lose, and little to stop them it seems. Or are we just being bullshited by the government? In reality it's a sure thing that we just don't face the kinds of dire security issues (as for example the Isrealis do) that we're led to believe we need in the form of illegal "legalized" domestic surveillance, etc. It's probably true we have more military abroad than at home in the U.S. because the government knows terrorism on U.S. soil is a bogus trumped up charge to bs Americans into giving up our blood-borne freedoms and constitutional liberties many TRULY patriotic Americans have died for in ages past!
it is domestic terrorism and spying by OUR OWN government that poses MORE of a threat to contend with than most of this so-called foreign "terrorist" fear-mongering crap.
I'd think you might even ask virtually any of these real smugglers for a clue how true this probably is... "It's mystifying that this out-of-control situation continues to exist, yet... more

Starting May 1, citizens of Ventura county will be paying an extra $1.49 on their telephone bills to GAIN ACCESS to Emergency Services - if they opt out of the monthly fee never fear there is a healthy alternative - just pay $50 any time they call 911.
How many people who would have usually called in and reported accidents they've witnessed- will now just drive on by... how many people that see something, won't have a chance to say something because they don't want to cough up $50? It's like it makes being a good samaritan a benefit of the wealthy...
My mom sat on a bus this afternoon with a woman from Ventura who told her that concerned "skeptics" (as the article calls them) of the county have proposed yet another alternative to all this -- calling the county attorney with all 911 emergencies and having him make the $50 calls - I think that's a great idea! It's the government's idea of a really bad day: Washington's Metro trains shut down. Seaport computers in New York go dark. Bloggers reveal locations of railcars with hazardous materials. Airport control towers are disrupted in Philadelphia and Chicago. Overseas, a mysterious liquid is found on London's subway.
And that's just for starters.
The $3 million, invitation-only war game simulated what the U.S. described as plausible attacks over five days in February 2006 against the technology industry, transportation lines and energy utilities by anti-globalization hackers. It's the government's idea of a really bad day: Washington's Metro... more

...and CNN gets to tape the whole thing! Basically, they slipped the fake bomb, which is wallet size with the fuse the size of a cigarette, into an elastic back support. Maybe it's because the fake bomb was fake and didn't set off the metal detectors. Or maybe we should still be concerned about terrorists sneaking bombs on to planes by explaining away the beeps on the metal detector. Thing is, this tester is a middle-aged white guy. My guess is that if he were of Middle Eastern descent or something, he wouldn't have been able to explain away anything.
I have a question: why don't they just pass us through an x-ray machine? I'd rather be x-rayed than have to read about TSA failures....and CNN gets to tape the whole thing! Basically, they slipped the fake bomb, which... more

According Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff, one of the biggest threats to US security may now come from Europe. He said militant attacks and plots in Europe over recent years had made the US aware of the "real risk that Europe will become a platform for terrorists". He referenced the rise in "home-grown terrorism" in Europe and hinted at an increase in security checks (uh, like this perhaps? http://current.com/items/88813397_hey_britain_the_fbi_wants_instant_access_to_your_identity_data)
My question: Why is the focus always on the terrorists from abroad? What about the US's own monsters responsible for horrific events on home soil (i.e. Oklahoma City)? According Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff, one of the biggest threats to US... more
