For the fashion conscious bicycle rider, the elimination of bike chains sounds like music to the ears. Jruiter Studio have realised this and created a concept design bicycle without a chain.
Suitable for small inner city locations, this bicycle gives a comfortable ride and is easier on the eye. It may not have any super speed components or unusual features but it would still stand out regardless.
Delhi Metro has connected nearby cities Delhi and Noida. This comes as a great milestone for the project that has been remarkably efficient under Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. While many other large-scale government projects in India suffer from corruption and delays, the metro project has remained relatively corruption-free and on schedule. Its relative success so far may be linked its status as a private-public entity, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which largely stays out of reach of the hands of corrupt politicians and government employees. Perhaps continued praise of successful and effective government undertakings will hold India to a higher standard, allowing it to reach its full potential for sustainable growth and a higher quality of life for all its citizens. Positive but honest media and publicity, such as the Discovery Channel's "24 Hours with the Delhi Metro," will hopefully garner support for effective management in Indian government undertakings, and for this project designed to reduce pollution and traffic. The metro project, however, has experienced at least two fatal accidents in the course of its construction. Continued press coverage of this project and others, alongside public demand for quality results, will decide how well the Indian government will tackle its many challenges going forward.

What if you could drive onto the highway, take your hands off the wheel, and sit back and read a book? That might not be as far-fetched as you might think if an EU-financed research project is successful. The project, dubbed SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) wants to link vehicles together in eight-car “road trains” led by a professional driver. The project, which is aimed at commuters traveling long distances, could drastically cut travel time, congestion, and fuel consumption.
The Airboard looks like fun -- powered by gasoline and hovering using a cushion of air, this mobile device can reach speed sof 15 mph, across many surfaces. It is only stationary over water, sand and dirft-filled areas.

All modes of tranportation are at peak capacity this morning with the closure of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge -- a major thoroughfare in between the two cities that carries 200,000 vehicles a day. People report getting up hours ahead of time to get to work. Commuters took to Twitter yesterday afternoon to vent their frustration over an eyebar that was supposed to be fixed on the Bay Bridge over Labor Day. It collapsed damaging three cars during yesterday afternoon's commute. The California Department of Transportation doesn't know when the span will open back up. Crews worked over night on the structure after two tie rods and a crossbar -- thousands of pounds of steel -- fell onto the roadway. Some people say they no longer trust the bridge for their commute and will take Bay Area Rapid Transit from now on. One woman from Alameda had to get to Marin county using three different modes of tranportation; Bus, BART and Ferry. All modes of tranportation are at peak capacity this morning with the closure of the... more

(10-27) 20:49 PDT San Francisco -- Three pieces of the Bay Bridge's cantilever section that underwent emergency repairs over Labor Day weekend snapped and crashed onto the upper deck of the span Tuesday afternoon, striking three vehicles and forcing the indefinite closure of the region's busiest bridge.
The reality in 2009 is not the future people envisioned in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Where’s our colony on Mars?! Where’s our talking robots that will do all our household chores? Where’s our flying cars?!
We’re still far off from building a city on another planet. The closest we’ve coming to affordable chore-performing robots are the Looj and Rumba. But the flying car is no longer science fiction.
Terrafugia, a start up in Massachusetts, U.S.A., is currently road and air testing the Transition. Billed as a “roadable aircraft,” the Transition is close to becoming the first vehicle to be both street legal and receive certification as a light sport airplane.
As a car, the Transition is a front wheel drive, has been tested at speeds up to 90 mph (145 km/h) and gets about 30 miles per gallon. Once the wings have been electronically folded up the Transition can fit into most standard household garages. Making a shopping run or hitting the slopes? The Transition’s storage area is long enough for a pair of skis and roomy enough for dozens of grocery bags.
As an aircraft, the Transition cruises at 115 mph (185 km/h) and can fly as slow as 50 mph before stalling out. It needs a mere 50 feet of runway space to take off, has a range of nearly 500 miles and, in case something goes horribly wrong, there’s a full vehicle parachute. The reality in 2009 is not the future people envisioned in the 50s, 60s and 70s.... more

A US company and its Chinese partner are piloting a bus powered by ultracapacitors in Washington DC. Ultracapacitors lack the capacity of regular batteries but are considerably cheaper and can be recharge completely in under a minute. Sinautec Automobile Technologies, based in Arlington, VA, and its Chinese partner, Shanghai Aowei Technology Development Company, have spent the past three years demonstrating the approach with 17 municipal buses on the outskirts of Shanghai. The executive director of Sinautec touts the energy efficiency of this approach: 'Even if you use the dirtiest coal plant on the planet [to charge an ultracapacitor], it generates a third of the carbon dioxide of diesel.A US company and its Chinese partner are piloting a bus powered by ultracapacitors in... more
Six-figure salary spenders can act out their craziest aquatic chase scenes, now that the Scubacraft has been invented.
A yellow speedboat that flies across the water's surface at speeds of 50 mph, Scubacraft is unique in the fact that it is fully functional above and beneath the sea. It has been tested at the infamous Pinewood studios -- where multiple James Bond movies were filmed -- where it has descended to depths of 30 metres (100ft).
The driver must be suited with diving apparatus as the Scubacraft is completely hoodless, during submersion. If having fun above and below the surface, doesnt do it for buyers, then the 160 hp engine with electric thrusters, should twitch ears and attract eyes.
Scubacraft is priced at £100,000 ($150,000), but figures go higher. It will be available in the 'flesh' by the end of 2010.

KAIST’s newly developed electric vehicle system could be onto something. The vehicle does away with batteries completely and relies on pulling power from a system of cables buried beneath the road. The On Line Electric Vehicle (OLEV) is comprised of electric buses that drive over tracks containing power coils. When a bus crosses the track a boost of electricity is delivered, allowing the vehicle to continue travelling without having to stop and recharge.KAIST’s newly developed electric vehicle system could be onto something. This 7-yr-old girl is now an orphan because a truck veered into the shoulder her parents were riding tandem and killed them both. The driver is out walking free and was never ticketed or charged.
This happened near my hometown of San Antonio and although it's breaking hearts amongst locals, I wanted this situation to be known on a larger scale because I know it's not just a San Antonio or Texas issue. Cyclists are being treated no better than deer even in cities with a bike-friendly attitude. If you are a Texan, please to go to biketexas.org and sign the BikeTexas Safe Passing petition. If you are not, please do all that you can within your own community to ensure the cyclists and pedestrians have rights out there on the road and have a better chance of getting home safely. This 7-yr-old girl is now an orphan because a truck veered into the shoulder her... more
The imagination cannot be restricted, especially when it comes to futuristic ideas. This concept design from Reindy Allendra is a perfect example of an idea with no boundaries. The WB-1010 is a aeroplane with a number of insane features and materials -- it can seat over 1500 passengers, while flying at speeds of just under 1000kmph.
Allendra entered the design into the KLM Indonesia aircraft design competition, and it's likely to grab attention of artists and physicists alike. WB-1010 is made from material similiar to GLARE -- a glass-reinforced Fibre Metal Laminate -- and is pumped with helium, making it feather-like in weight.
Windows are made from 'smart glass', the plane runs on wind energy and it can land vertically if needed.
It's way of as far as reality is concerned, but its all about the possibilities of distant-future flight. The imagination cannot be restricted, especially when it comes to futuristic ideas.... more
