Recycled clothing isn’t just for the thrift store anymore. Starting early next year, the Ford Motor Company will release the next-generation focus featuring used denim in the seats, carpet backing, and as sound-absorption materials for interior quietness.

Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about four feet wide and five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit. I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench. I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other end holding a fountain pen and a contract waiting to be signed. Nobody can see what's printed on the contract. It's too far away, and besides, the shit stench is making everybody's eyes water. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/album-rewievs/14424-the-problem-with-music-by-steve-albiniWhenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up... more

www.care2.com/causes/global-warming/blog/porche-plans-hybrid-versions-of-every-model/
Porsche, known for producing some of the fastest and most expensive automobiles in the world, has announced plans to introduce a hybrid version of every model in its lineup.
Apparently, the German carmaker is feeling the squeeze as the European Union tightens its emissions regulations, forcing Porsche to cut its average CO2 emissions from 255 grams per kilometer to 216 by the year 2015.
To meet this strict goal, Porsche will incorporate hybrid drivetrains in to every model in its line-up.

I know that I've made a lot of noise about how high speed rail is falling apart (and getting replaced by out-of-control high-speed buses), thanks to some newly elected governors who are shutting down the projects in their states. But rail is indeed still (slowly) coming to the US. Transportation Secretary Roy LaHood announced the latest updates to the plan today, and here's what they look like.

Our world trade and travel network is beset on all sides by problems at the corporate, government, and street level, and we have a responsibility to make it safe and efficient for the people who need it. As the shipping conglomerate CSX reminds us in their ubiquitous NPR ads, they can move a ton of freight 436 miles on one gallon of fuel. What if they could move a ton of freight 436 miles on solar power faster than before? Who is going to stand in their way? The aerospace lobby? Our world trade and travel network is beset on all sides by problems at the corporate,... more

Dozens of automotive models—from manufacturers that include boutique supercar makers in Europe and mass producers in China and India—may never roll down U.S. streets.
Once the unquestioned destination car market, the U.S. is no longer even the world's biggest. Last year, China became the top consumer of motor vehicles. Our list this year includes two cars we'd like to see here: the world's fastest pickup truck and a two-seat roadster with a roof that retracts in just 12 seconds. Nevertheless, you won't see these vehicles in a showroom any time soon.

In an effort to modernize its fleet and provide improved performance and reliability for U.S. passengers in the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak has commissioned the German manufacturing giant, Siemens (NYSE: SI), to build 70 Cities Sprinter ACS-64 electric locomotives, the first of which will be operational in 2013.
According to Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman, the new locomotives will operate at speeds up to 125 mph (201 kph) on the Northeast Corridor from Washington, D.C. to Boston and up to 110 mph (177 kph) on the Keystone Corridor from Philadelphia to Harrisburg, Pa. They will replace locomotives in service between 20 and 30 years with an average mileage of 3.5 million miles traveled.

Underwater yachts . . .
The U-010 Undersea Yacht is one seriously luxurious yacht. Designed to explore the depths of the ocean in style, the U-010 Undersea Yacht is comfortable and safe. Coming equipped with “integrated systems of stabilization, the passage on the sea surface is slow and comfortable even under the worst conditions.
This underwater yacht is essentially a submarine, but an awesome and luxurious one that will make even Sir Richard Branson jealous that he doesn’t have one yet. I wouldn’t mind exploring the ocean in one of these.

In response to global demand for innovations in public transportation, Google has pledged $1 million to a New Zealand company with an elevated opinion of urban commuting.
Two years ago, the search engine giant made headlines by announcing Project 10^100: a global call for ideas that would change the world by helping as many people as possible. Over 150,000 ideas were submitted, and "drive innovation in public transportation" was voted one of the five winning concepts.
In response, Google Inc. searched high and low for a company that had the most forward looking vision for the transportation industry, as well as the expertise to bring their futuristic ideas to life.
What they found was Shweeb.

2011 Automotive Hot List: The Departed...
--If there’s one constant in this world, it’s this: We live in a world of constant flux. In the automotive world, however, we’ve all grown accustomed to seeing the same group of manufacturers introduce new models each year. You know the names. But for the 2011 model year—thanks largely to the huge economic downturn that began in late 2008—four well-known American nameplates have gone the way of the Edsel, so to speak.

Ah-Ha RSF News Video Investigation: Solana Beach Taxis Curbed. WHY?
Solana Beach City Council members on Wednesday, Sept. 8 passed an ordinance curbing taxi drivers behaving badly, allegedly.
Residents and business owners complained taxi drivers scarfed up too many parking spots in front of homes and business near the Cedros Avenue Coaster Station.
To make matters worse, according to Solana Beach council members, those darn taxi drivers gathered across the street from their cars, playing games, socializing, and -- goodness, gracious -- littering.
Solana Beach staff said the local Sheriff’s Department has responded to nine, 911 calls over the past two years due to fighting, or arguing, among the drivers.
Council members restricted cabs to the currently designated taxi parking zone with four spaces. Should those spaces be taken, the new ordinance required drivers to keep moving. Officials said they may expand the number of taxi spaces in six months.
Taxi drivers now may stop only to pick up passengers hailing them so long as it is safe, according to the ordinance. What's more, taxi drivers now must carry $1 million in liability insurance along with passengers, up from the previous $350,000 requirement.
Ah-Ha Rancho Santa Fe went to the scene of the taxi controversy this week to investigate the situation. This video records the scene.
The taxi drivers all seemed very well-behaved and intentioned. Many have been working around Solana Beach for five years, or more. Many also were part-time drivers going to school for degrees in areas such as business and film.
Apparently, no taxi drivers were informed of the council's taxi discussions and actions until after passage of the ordinance, so didn't have the opportunity to respond to allegations.
Nobody from Solana Beach government would agree to be on camera to be interviewed about the taxi cab prohibitions and all other requests for interviews from official sources were ignored.Ah-Ha RSF News Video Investigation: Solana Beach Taxis Curbed. WHY?
