MMA fighter to team up with Steven Soderbergh on spy movie

Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh and female MMA fighter Gina Carano will be working together on an action-packed spy film, titled "Knockout".

Known for directing films such as "Ocean's Eleven", "Erin Brokovich" and "The Informant!" Steven Soderbergh aims to get creative with the spy movie and expresses his excitement about working with Carano.

"My feeling was, If I don’t do this, somebody else will,” Soderbergh explained. "I felt, somebody is going to look at her and go, ‘She should be in a movie!’ And I felt like, Why shouldn’t I be the person saying that?

“If you start following the female MMA fighters, Gina pops out pretty noticeably,” Soderbergh continues. “I thought it was a fascinating combination of appearance and activity... I’d been wanting to make a spy action film for a while, but hadn’t really determined what I was going to bring to it that would distinguish it from the traditional approach. Then I thought, ‘Why don’t I just build it around her? She can actually break people in half.’ I was interested in doing something ultra-realistic.”

Carano -- who has had previous onscreen experience as TV-show gladiator 'Crush', from "American Gladiator" -- has often been referred to as 'the face of women's MMA', as her Muay Thai (think Tony Jaa in "Ong-Bak") fighting style has made her one of the most unique and successful fighters in the sport.

The script for the movie is currently being written but Soderbergh proclaims that it will be a merge of a Bond flick and "Point Blank" -- Carano's character will be approached by the government to carry-out tasks, which ordinary government bodies cannot do, due to exposure.

“My desire is for it to be a very realistic portrayal of somebody who gets hired, as these people do, by the government, to go and perform certain duties that it would be inappropriate to give to the military,” explained Soderbergh. “That could be anything from a hostage-grab to surveillance to an actual killing.”Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh and female MMA fighter Gina Carano will be... more
