It’s been quite a while since I have been back to Austin’s infamous 6th Street, home of slurring college co-eds, abrupt STOKED! frat boys, the ubiquitous WOO girls, the Best Wurst you’ll ever have, untucked button-downs with square toed shoes, and bars that reek of vomit as far as the nose can smell (thank you Dizzy Rooster).

More than 100 drivers in Austin, Texas found their cars disabled or the horns honking out of control, after an intruder ran amok in a web-based vehicle-immobilization system normally used to get the attention of consumers delinquent in their auto payments.
Police with Austin’s High Tech Crime Unit on Wednesday arrested 20-year-old Omar Ramos-Lopez, a former Texas Auto Center employee who was laid off last month, and allegedly sought revenge by bricking the cars sold from the dealership’s four Austin-area lots
“We initially dismissed it as mechanical failure,” says Texas Auto Center manager Martin Garcia. “We started having a rash of up to a hundred customers at one time complaining. Some customers complained of the horns going off in the middle of the night. The only option they had was to remove the battery.”
The dealership used a system called Webtech Plus as an alternative to repossessing vehicles that haven’t been paid for. Operated by Cleveland-based Pay Technologies, the system lets car dealers install a small black box under vehicle dashboards that responds to commands issued through a central website, and relayed over a wireless pager network. The dealer can disable a car’s ignition system, or trigger the horn to begin honking, as a reminder that a payment is due. The system will not stop a running vehicle.
Texas Auto Center began fielding complaints from baffled customers the last week in February, many of whom wound up missing work, calling tow trucks or disconnecting their batteries to stop the honking. The troubles stopped five days later, when Texas Auto Center reset the Webtech Plus passwords for all its employee accounts, says Garcia. Then police obtained access logs from Pay Technologies, and traced the saboteur’s IP address to Ramos-Lopez’s AT&T internet service, according to a police affidavit filed in the case.
Ramos-Lopez’s account had been closed when he was terminated from Texas Auto Center in a workforce reduction last month, but he allegedly got in through another employee’s account, Garcia says. At first, the intruder targeted vehicles by searching on the names of specific customers. Then he discovered he could pull up a database of all 1,100 Auto Center customers whose cars were equipped with the device. He started going down the list in alphabetical order, vandalizing the records, disabling the cars and setting off the horns.
“Omar was pretty good with computers,” says Garcia.
The incident is the first time an intruder has abused the no-start system, according to Jim Krueger, co-owner of Pay Technologies. “It was a fairly straightforward situation,” says Krueger. “He had retained a password, and what happened was he went in and created a little bit of havoc.”
Krueger disputes that the horns were honking in the middle of the night; he says the horn honking can only be activated between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
First rolled out about 10 years ago, remote immobilization systems are a controversial answer to delinquent car payments, with critics voicing concerns that debtors could suffer needless humiliation, or find themselves stranded during an emergency. Proponents say the systems let financers extend credit to consumers who might otherwise be ineligible for an auto loan.
Austin police filed computer intrusion charges against Ramos-Lopez on Tuesday.

"Family-Friendly" Community Center in Austin Texas hosts War Criminal
(Austin, Texas) Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) Colonel Bentzion Gruber spoke at the Austin Jewish Community Center on March 4, 2010.
Protesters started gathering outside the center about an hour before his lecture, carrying signs "Judaism-Yes, Zionism-No" and "Bentzion Gruber, WAR CRIMES are not ethical."
The controversy arises from the fact that a community center such as the JCC-Austin would allow, and even co-sponsor, the lecture of a man who is directly involved in the violation of International Law and is responsible for directing 18,000 soldiers in human rights abuses in Occupied Palestine.
The Palestinian people suffer under apartheid conditions as inhabitants of Israel, a country where they make up almost half - 5 million - of the population. Israel is attempting to gradually cleanse its Palestinian population, to be replaced by Jewish-Israeli settlements, and the IOF plays a major role in this.
Bentzion Gruber spoke to an audience of about 100 mostly middle aged people about how ethical the IOF is, claiming it is the most ethical military in the world today.
Gruber is touring the nation to raise funds for his agenda at the same time that the UN Goldstone commission and international organizations such as UNICEF and the UN, report about Israel’s crimes against International Law and human rights.
Gruber dismissed the white-phosphorus bombs used by the IOF in Operation Cast Lead as simple smoke bombs. Jeff Zavala, who video taped portions of Gruber's speech that evening, has his statements recorded.
Gruber states "Israel didn't use phosphorus in Gaza period. If they used phosphorus shells in Gaza, where are those people? I’ve never seen one photo. We didn't use phosphorus." You can view this video on Youtube, (google Bentzion Gruber), which includes photos of people harmed by phosphorus shells.
The Goldstone Report has extensive documented evidence that the IOF used white-phosphorus bombs against civilians; one of many war crimes Israel refuses to stand trial for. Israel has already admitted to dropping phosphorus bombs on Gaza.
"According to the Israeli document, two senior officers, Brigadier-General Eyal Eisenberg and Colonel Ilan Malka, "exceeded their authority in approving the use of phosphorus shells". The document also mentioned that the shells were fired "in violation of the rules of engagement prohibiting use of such artillery near populated areas." It added that the officers, who still run their previous posts, have been disciplined." (source: PressTV)
As the lecture attendees left the JCC Austin, they were met with more protesters and more signs such as "read the GOLDSTONE REPORT online" and "Stop Israeli Terrorism."
Protester Jeff Zavala stated "I believe that the Palestinians under occupation are the single most oppressed people in the world today, that's why I'm here tonight." Haithem El-Zabri, tried to attend the lecture and was turned away. "After the guard looked at my id, he said 'you are not welcome here; you need to turn around and leave the premises immediately,' and then he called his supervisor, it was very clear he had been told to be on the lookout for me and had my name memorized; he didn't go back to check a blacklist or anything!"
Protests across the country are increasing due to the fact that the apartheid in Israel-Palestine is increasingly seen as a human rights issue and not an issue of religion or nationalism.
Gruber is is touring the country lecturing until late March to include Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, Santa Barbara; Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey; Miami, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa Bay, Houston, and Washington D.C.

A busted windshield and a smashed sunroof are remnants of Dinesh Mallam’s car after a Piper Cherokee PA28 grazed over the top of it on its way into the Echelon I building.
Mallam was driving to work on a route he only took Thursday morning because he had to drop a friend off nearby.
"It happened in like a split second. Only my car was under the plane. I don't know if it was lucky or unlucky, but I’m safe,” he said.
Mallam was traveling southbound on the frontage road of Highway 183 right in front of the building the plane crashed into.
He said he saw the plane coming at him and the wing nearly clipped his car.
"In a split second, it hit the ground floor of the building on the right side. The impact was so huge that my car was treading and totally out of control,” Mallam said. “I was trying to control my car. My windshield was broken and all the debris piling on my car. I could hear all the noises from the explosion. I blacked out for like two seconds."
He said he regained composure and got control of the car. As soon as he could, he brought it to a stop, but Mallam said he couldn’t see from the thick black smoke surrounding him. He also said he almost wished he couldn’t hear.
"It was like an IMAX theatre or something. All my windows were rolled up, but I could still hear that sound so loud," he said.
Those were all sights and sounds he hopes will soon go away.

But sitting in his apartment, he still can't believe he made it out alive.
"I’m so lucky I escaped without even a scratch," Mallam said.
Federal officials are keeping his car while the investigation continues.

If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt asking yourself, “Why did this have to happen?” The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time. The writing process, started many months ago, was intended to be therapy in the face of the looming realization that there isn’t enough therapy in the world that can fix what is really broken. Needless to say, this rant could fill volumes with example after example if I would let it. I find the process of writing it frustrating, tedious, and probably pointless… especially given my gross inability to gracefully articulate my thoughts in light of the storm raging in my head. Exactly what is therapeutic about that I’m not sure, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Many a Time Was Heard; "They Could Be Worse"!
( but remember,....this is AUSTIN we are talking about,...)
Gardez Lou - the phrase used to warn passers-by of raw sewage about to be thrown from a window into the street below.
Formed in 1981, GUARDEZ LOU confused, terrified, and provided chuckles for the Austin TX music "scene" for 10 years with its jazz/funk/art-punk assault. After having several singers the line up finally settled as Tim Evgenides on guitar, David Griffy on bass, Dan Rabinovitsj on drums, and Paul Horsley filling the vocalist spot. Other members included Paul Comer, a former GLOU singer, who played second guitar for a while, and David Eccles who helped with song writing and visuals. Influences from many UK post punk bands such as Swell Maps, Section 25, Echo and The Bunnymen, Throbbing Gristle, as well Austin contemporary artists (Vertibeads, Big Boys, Hickoids, etc.) can be heard in the GLOU material. GUARDEZ LOU played venues such as Liberty Lunch, The Beach, Continental Club, Studio 29, Chances, The Black Cat, Austin Outhouse, The Axiom (Houston), and Wacky's (San Antonio) with acts including Scratch Acid, ST-37, Ed Hall, Nice Strong Arm, and Glass Eye. David and Tim were in a band prior to GLOU known as The Electric Tools, which primarily played at seminal punk clubs Raul's and Duke's Royal Coach Inn. GUARDEZ LOU finally released its first home studio recorded cassette album in 1987, The Cummerbund Salute, which was completed inside a church for acoustic value. In 1988 History Mystery was released, a compilation tape of of live tracks and various demos. The band then went into Lone Star Recording Studios and embarked on its 16 track 2 inch tape effort with engineer Mark Tester at the helm. The effort was named Cantankerous Juggernaut, and it was finally released early 1990 on cassette. Soon after, the band began to splinter, with members pursuing different personal and career interests. Other bands that GLOU were in later included Drug Zombies, Fried Pipers, Hundredth Monkey, Sibling Rivals, Organdy Snood, Keg Vultures, and The Indentations. The band reunited in the studio in 1997 and 2000, creating the tunes "Tone Tarts", and "Ahead of Myself", respectively.
