Made up of migrants from various countries, including Russia, China and Uruguay, Gogol Bordello’s first album was released in 1999. Trancontinental Hustle is their fifth. What makes this undeniably innovative band, with its fusion of a range of world musical styles with the energy of punk rock, so significant right now? Gogol Bordello’s music has always been political, but growing racist attacks from First World governments has provoked a more explicit stance of resistance. Across Europe, Roma are facing extreme and growing persecution. Roma have, once more, become scapegoats of a capitalist economic crisis. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/album-rewievs/10503-gogol-bordelloMade up of migrants from various countries, including Russia, China and Uruguay, Gogol... more

As anyone who caught his national tour knows, Conan O'Brien is "legally prohibited from being funny on television." But his writers aren't.
O'Brien's longtime writers, as well as sidekick and Tonight Show announcer Andy Richter, will start making themselves comfortable at their new network with a stand-up special, Team Coco Presents Conan's Writers Live, airing Sunday at 10/9c on TBS.
"It's bunch of guys who were writing for The Tonight Show, who are performers in their own right and who have been sitting at home for the last five months ready to do something," Richter tells TVGuide.com. "Our writers had already been doing stand-up together as a group at various stand-up clubs around LA, so it was just sort of the proverbial no-brainer."
Conan O'Brien says goodbye to The Tonight Show
The writers found themselves with more spare time after O'Brien's sudden departure from The Tonight Show in January led to an exit deal with NBC that prohibited him from appearing on TV until fall. His new TBS show will begin airing in November.
"It's not like they're a bunch of mousy quiet little fellas sitting there putting lines in Conan's mouth," he says. "They're all really funny, talented performers in their own rite and it's nice that people will get a chance to see that."
The "legally prohibited" part of "legally prohibited" is no joke: Don't expect the lanky redhead to drop in at the special. But that will mean even more recognition for his talented team of writers, some of whom appeared in the "Legally Prohibited" tour that took O'Brien across the country in the spring.
Andy Richter still has hard feelings toward NBC and Jay Leno
"It's about showcasing each individual's bit. There's the stuff that they write for Conan and the stuff that they write for themselves. So some of the guys are just kind of straight-up joke tellers, and then other guys are going to be kind of more weird, atmospheric character pieces, but all funny and not too far apart from each other in terms of comedic identity," he says. "You're going to see lots of silliness."
The special also marks the first appearance of "Team Coco" on TBS since the network announced O'Brien's new late-night show in April.
Conan O'Brien going to TBS
Richter says the team has yet to truly start brainstorming for the program, scheduled to debut in November, but says he's already excited about Team Coco's new home.
"The network couldn't have been more open to us and more inviting to us and more welcoming to us," he says. "It was pretty lousy what happened and it felt pretty lousy, but I really do think we're going to end up in a better place and that's already becoming evident."As anyone who caught his national tour knows, Conan O'Brien is "legally... more

Here, HOT off the animation press is a true story with an original song. The performer is a spirited rock 'n roll blond who is playing his guitar and singing THE BALLAD OF JAY LENO.
Ah, music hath sounds that soothe the savage contract wars.
It's a bit of Hollywood history and more minutia for the late night devotees who have their favorites when it comes to late night TV.
What makes it better is that Conan O'Brien will be on 60 Minutes tomorrow night. It should be very interesting.
Hey, it won't solve the global economic crisis but it gave me a real good chuckle.

Conan O'Brien is breaking his silence -- and not a minute too soon.
The former "Tonight Show" host will speak to CBS' "60 Minutes" this Sunday. Steve Kroft, who appeared on O'Brien's show when it was still "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" back in 2001, is doing the interview.
The timing isn't coincidental: O'Brien's exit deal with NBC says he can't do formal interviews until May 1st. Sunday is May 2nd.
Kroft told the New York Times that O'Brien "flirts with" those restrictions. And in an absurd twist, NBC's limitations mean that CBS won't be able to use O'Brien's likeness to promote the segment before Saturday.
“I think we’ll just show me talking to him and have to blank his face out,” Kroft told the Times.Conan O'Brien is breaking his silence -- and not a minute too soon. The former... more

So Conan is officially off the air. Leno comes back to replace him in March. The whole world seems to be disappointed. Everyone except Ben Hoffman. He's pissed that you even cared.
I have to admit the only episode of Conan's Tonight Show, I watched on TV was one two weeks ago at the height of the controversy. I caught the last few minutes of Conan's finale on Hulu. Hoffman makes a good point:
"Nobody watches late night talk shows anymore. Okay some people do, but they'll be dead soon."
A recent New York Times article suggests that Conan's low ratings were easily predictable...
"not because Mr. O’Brien does not appeal to younger viewers — he clearly does, as evidenced by the large numbers he attracted for his closing shows — but because regularly assembling those young adult viewers in significant numbers in the late-night hours has become a daunting, if not impossible, task."
If young people spend their late nights in front of a television, they're more likely to be watching cable or watching DVR'd episodes of primetime shows. This demographic still watches the funniest clips, but on Hulu, after they read about them in the blogosphere.
The same blogosphere is responsible for making late night's jokes stale. Ben points out that "I heard a funnier joke on Gawker, six hours ago." The internet teases out every joke, before television can. (A few months ago Joe Wilson, mentioned a similar idea for stand-up.)
What does that mean for the future of late night network television? I dunno, but I'll probably hear about it first online. So Conan is officially off the air. Leno comes back to replace him in March. The whole... more
Today Jason sent around last night's Kimmel / Leno interview. I watched it, and laughed so hard that I scared five people in surrounding cubicles.
It's one of the most cringe-worthy awkward interviews I've ever seen. Kimmel cuts deep into Leno. When Leno asked "what's the best prank you ever pulled?" Kimmel responds: "I told a guy that five years from now, I'm going to give you my show. and then when the five years came I gave it to him, and then I took it back almost instantly."
Later Leno asks about Kimmel and strippers. Kimmel responds: "Strippers, I don't like in general, because you have this phony relationship with them for money, similar to that of when you and Conan were on 'The Tonight Show' together, passing the torch."
It seems like everyone is siding with Conan. Current user Timbuktu sent me some pictures he made showing his Conan support.
But Leno must have fans. I bet Conan's audience is much more vocal. For example the Facebook group NBC Stop Screwing Over Jay Leno has 5 members. Whereas I'm with Coco has 9,098 members.
Jay Leno seems so out of touch to us, but I imagine there are older people who are equally out of touch who enjoy his hackneyed sense of humor.
Have you meet anyone who sides with Leno?
All this Leno / Conan coverage isn't just on the internet. Newscasters are (very literally) saying the same things. infoMania has compiled those clips, in this segment called Late Night Talkpocalypse.

I don't watch very much TV, but last night I realized that there was going to be something newsworthy on The Tonight Show. So I paused Breakin', and tuned in. It was weird and awkwardly funny to watch Conan make jokes about his potential early retirement.
Conan has been buzzing across the internet. Yesterday, Conan released a statement that he was disappointed with NBC.
Last night Conan did a segment where a writer claimed he was being pimped by NBC. The text "[Ho]" was laid over Conan's face.
Kimmel did his show as Jay Leno, and had guest Chevy Chase be Conan.
This picture supporting Conan has hundreds of reblogs on tumblr.

NY Times is reporting that Leno will start at 11:35 and Conan will start at 12:05.
The entire internet just told me that Jay Leno is retaking Conan's 11:30 slot. Of course, I'll probably side with Conan, as I think he is funnier than Jay Leno. But I am way more interested in the trends, jokes, and memes that will come from this event.
Both "Conan" and "Jay Leno" are trending on Twitter.
A few Facebook groups have popped up with names like Help Save "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" and Boycott Leno to Save Conan!
