Shortly after arriving in the downtown core of Toronto, we met up with the tail end of protestors. We saw Black Bloc terrorists moving away from King and Bay. We started to follow the protestors and noticed what we thought was tear gas being shot in to the crowd. We got closed, and realized it was actually a Police car, TAVIS unit 56 which had been smashed in, spray painted and then set ablaze.
I stayed in the area taking photos, and soon realized Police had us surrounded on all 4 sides. They would not let us leave the fire zone, and kept the 20 - 30 of us in front of the first fire, and right in front of the second fire of Unit #730, which caught fire after police passed by.

It is foolish to attack what you do not understand. Being foolish is being ignorant of the facts and acting upon your limited knowledge. It is not possible for one person to know everything, and therefore foolish to act more than they have too. However whenever you place a power over you to make decision that you could not, than you are twice the fool.
The problem with being a governed people is that we all too often want our politicians to fix the injustices of this world as we see them. The problem is that in the pursuance of this, we are often blissfully unaware of the collateral damage until it becomes too late. This has a multitude of unintended consequences that only serves to further divide our nation. This creates a very diverse set of rules that attempts to please everyone, but only has one conclusion – a collapse.
For instance, Hamilton thought that the only way to protect the newly formed union was by making a standing army with a solid navy. At the time, there was only one way to accomplish this, and that was to create a fiscal military state. This means that the lion’s share of the national income goes to paying for said entities. However he recognized from earlier examples of other nations that the only way to build a sizable military was to institute a central bank that could fund such a debt that is inevitably created by having standing armies.
In this particular case he met well, but was blissfully naive as t...

He's old, armed and wearing a cowboy hat. Yep this is Dale Peterson in another campaign advert. According to Video Gum, he lost a primary for Agriculture Commissioner (who knew Agriculture was crazy and not as boring as it sounds) and is now backing another candidate. The youtube video is titled 'Get Away From That' and refers to a scene where Peterson scares off someone removing a campaign poster by shooting a gun in the air. Extreme volatility is not a sign of health for financial markets. But in 2010 financial markets around the globe are experiencing unprecented volatility. Why? It is because the entire world financial system has been gripped by fear. In today's crazed environment, it seems like just about anything can set off a major panic. In fact, these days politicians have to be extremely careful about what they say about their national finances, because saying the wrong thing can literally send world markets into violent convulsions.Extreme volatility is not a sign of health for financial markets. Five months into 2010, America is still in the eye of a perfect storm of fear that blew across the country in 2009.
There were angry town hall meetings this past summer, demonstrations on the Mall in Washington and vitriolic attacks from both Republicans and Democrats on the floor of the House of Representatives. There was the desecration of sacred Democratic ground in Massachusetts in the run-off to replace Sen. Kennedy, and the growing power of the Tea Party evident in Sen. Bob Bennett's primary loss in Utah and Rand Paul's primary win in Kentucky.
Across the country, fear has taken root as fast as Scott's Quick fix grass seed. And now, the human and ecological disaster in the Gulf is certain to ignite a new level of anger and fear.
For months, political pundits and commentators have proffered countless diagnoses of what is causing this anger that has taken civility hostage, all the while acting surprised. But anger is only the symptom. The cause is much deeper and more disturbing.
It is simply fear.
Fear of losing something we have. Fear of not getting something we want. Fear that comes from lack of security. Fear that comes from uncertainty about the future. Everywhere Americans turn there is reason for fear: jobs, homes, mortgages, health insurance, retirement plans, even homeland security.
Let's examine some facts:
•15% of Americans -- or more than 46 million people - don't have health insurance.
•44%
•More than one in three Americans believe the health care reforms will affect them negatively.
•15 million out of work and another almost 11 million who are underemployed
•Millions of homes lost to foreclosure
•Household income flat for the past 40 years
•Social mobility - the promise made and delivered to millions over the decades - is way down in comparison to other countries.
•And the overwhelming majority of citizens who believe that life will not be better tomorrow for their children and grandchildren.

While I was at the gym this morning, I noticed that Fox News was interviewing Karl Rove on the just-released Pew poll showing that American's distrust of their government at an all time high, at which point they flashed a graphic on the screen showing how that statistic has varied over time. That same graph is shown as the image of this post.
What should be IMMEDIATELY apparent and obvious to all is that trust in the federal government peaked as Bush was coming into office (and the tragedy of 9/11 occurred) and has been plummeting ever since. Was this mentioned once in the segment on Fox News? Not once.
To somehow blame the growing distrust on President Obama and the Democrats in Congress (or ANYONE other than the Bush Administration) is flat out wrong and intellectually dishonest...While I was at the gym this morning, I noticed that Fox News was interviewing Karl... more

MOSCOW — Lilya Paizulayeva descended into the subway anxiously, trying to keep her distance from the crowds and the newly deployed and heavily armed police officers. She cringed at the train’s loud metallic shriek, pressing herself to the wall.
She was not scared of suicide bombers — she feared being taken for one herself.
With her jet-black hair and large dark eyes, Ms. Paizulayeva, a 26-year-old native of Chechnya, looks very much the daughter of Russia’s fiery North Caucasus region, from where, investigators say, two young women traveled to Moscow to blow themselves up last week in the rush-hour throngs, killing at least 40 people.
While for many the attacks are an unsettling reminder of the female suicide bombers who have terrorized this city for years, women from the Caucasus, particularly from Chechnya, say they worry about the return of the arbitrary arrests, xenophobic attacks and open hostility that many experienced after similar terrorist attacks in the past.
“Psychologically, I feel a kind of alarm inside,” said Ms. Paizulayeva, who was born in Chechnya’s capital, Grozny, and fled to Moscow in 1995 with her family when the war there started. “Though I’m dressed like a local, I think that perhaps someone could attack me in the metro,” she said. “This whole week I have felt like a stranger in this city.”
Though Russian citizens, Chechens and others from the North Caucasus are often seen as foreigners in Russia, especially here in the capital, and are frequently associated with immigrants from the countries of Central Asia that were former Soviet republics. More than 1,000 miles from Moscow, Chechnya has its own language, religion and customs, as well as a history of violent separatism that many in the rest of the country find alien in the best of times and threatening in the worst.
There have already been several reports of revenge attacks against people from the Caucasus in the wake of the bombings. Last week a brawl broke out on a subway train when a group of passengers insisted on inspecting the bags of several people who appeared to be from the Caucasus, according to the Sova Center, an organization that tracks xenophobic violence.
Attacks against people with darker skin and hair typical of those from the Caucasus are not uncommon in Russia.

At a rally in Maine, President Obama pushed back a bit on Republican assertions that the new health care legislation would herald the end of days.
Mr. Obama, speaking to a boisterous crowd in Portland, noted that the House Republican leader, Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, was among those to predict catastrophic results.
“John Boehner called the passage of this bill Armageddon,” Mr. Obama said, struggling to finish his sentence over boos at the mention of Mr. Boehner’s name.
“You had others who said this is the end of freedom as we know it,” he continued. “So after I signed the bill, I looked around.”
The laughter began to build.
“I looked up at the sky to see if asteroids were coming,” Mr. Obama said. More laughter.
“I looked at the ground to see if cracks had opened up in the earth,” he continued, echoing remarks he made at a rally in Iowa last week. “You know what, it turned out it was a pretty nice day. Birds were still chirping. Folks were strolling down the street. Nobody had lost their doctor. Nobody had pulled the plug on Granny. Nobody was being dragged away to be forced into some government-run health care plan.”
Then, the comedian-in-chief had a few choice remarks for commentators in the media.
“You have to love some of the pundits in Washington,” he said. “Every single day since I signed the reform law, there’s been another poll or headline that said, ‘Nation still divided on health care reform. Polls haven’t changed yet.’ Well, yeah. It just happened last week. It’s only been a week.
“Can you imagine if some of these reporters were working on a farm? You planted some seeds, and they came out the next day, and they looked, and nothing’s happened! There’s no crop! We’re going to starve! Oh, no! It’s a disaster!”
Mr. Obama urged patience. “It’s been a week, folks,” he said. “So before we find out if people like health care reform, we should wait to see what happens when we actually put it into place. Just a thought.”
Of course, Republicans say they will have the last laugh when the midterm elections roll around in November.

This started off as the scariest Halloween that I've ever experienced. I'm not scared of very many things. This is a list of things that scare me:
Sharks
MS-13
Sharks are carnivorous sea creatures. MS-13 is a Salvadorian street gang. Both are known for savage murder. I wasn't near the ocean, so fear number one was not a concern. Fear number two became a concern, when I found out where the Halloween party was.
The party was at a historic hotel next to MacArthur Park. I knew the park for its lake, and gang-related drug warfare. After finding hearing the location of the party, I developed a plan to avoid all trouble. Run up Alvarado, to Sixth, and dash into the party, without getting murdered. Easy-peasy. But things changed when we were invited to pre-party on Alvarado and 11th.
Alvarado and 11th is the heart of MS-13 territory!
I'm not one of those white people who is terrified of all gangsters. Heck, earlier in the day, some Sureños were hanging out at the little grocery store next to my house. I could tell they were banging because they had tattoos on their heads. But they weren't mean, they were just shootin' the shit, eatin' popsicles. After I bought some apple juice, I told them to have a nice day. They even reciprocated the compliment.
But MS-13 are different. They're known for killing anyone. Like I bet if they were in their eating popsicles, they would have shot me for complimenting them. I've heard stories about them jumping onto buses and killing every passenger. They're tough dudes, whose only goal is to kill all haters.
It makes sense that they'd be tough, they're refugees from a brutal civil war. The dozen year Salvadorian civil war, left 75,000 people dead. These war children made their way to the barrios of Pico-Union, and the notorious gang was formed. (Those on the Right, critical of 'violence perpetrated by illegal immigrants' should consider that Ronald Reagan supported the violent regime that caused the exodus.)
So back to the pre-party in Pico-Union. As we waited for our ride outside the MacArthur Park station, I imagined the worst. MS-13 gangsters could jump out of the park, enacting the ultimate gentrification tax, murder. I thought of kids dressed as grim reapers, chopping off my head.
Then a masquerading Marla Singer, pulled up. She picked us up and drove us to her boyfriend's house. As we drove down Alvarado, I realized that I'd walked this route before. I'd been in MS-13 country, and absolutely nothing happened!
We got to her boyfriend's beautiful mid-century home. He answered the door as a Babe-Magnet (Barbies stapled to his outfit.) After several quick drinks, we walked a mile to the park to celebrate Halloween.
Because I personally visited. I have empirical evidence to suggest that this neighborhood is no longer scary.
This is when someone might say: "better safe than sorry." I think that utterance is part of the same fear-mongering conversation that local news talks about to make Halloween more scary.
Irrational fears about Swine Flu, poisoned candy, or flammable costumes, scare us from leaving our homes. I think that it's thoroughly important to decide if these fears correspond to reality.
My fear about getting murdered by MS-13 in northern Pico-Union, no longer correspond to reality. In 2005, MacArthur Park had the highest reduction of crime statistics per resident in the United States. New efforts to revitalize the downtown core, have dramatically reduced crime in the surrounding neighborhoods. So walking down Alvarado in Pico-Union at night isn't as scary as it was before.
As realities rapidly change, our fears about them should move at the same rate. We should constantly be asking ourselves why certain things scare us.
I've done this, and that's why I'll got to parties in MacArthur Park, but stay far away from shark-infested waters. This started off as the scariest Halloween that I've ever experienced. I'm... more

On the radio this morning I heard a broadcast by the government, it contained voice samples of a fertiliser salesman, a confused neighbour and various other individuals. the voices commented on slightly peculiar behaviour such as having blacked out windows on a normal terrace house and the purchase of a large amount of feritiliser. After the people have spoken a man's voice tells us that "all of these things may sound normal on their own but join them together and it all adds up,", then we're told that we should report anything remotely suspicious and a number to call is even given.
This to me seems especially wrong, first of all it is attempting to strengthen the belief that for Britain to be safe we must become undercover spies in our own homes, I can't help but see symmetry with the way the Nazi's developed their world of control for the peoples safety. Secondly it acts to increase the effect of terror by provoking a belief that we are at some great risk, rather than ensuring people remain strong in the face of such terror.
I hope that the people of Britain do not descend in to mindless accusations against people who do anything remotely peculiar, and that this nation does not become more and more like the police state which should be feared by all people who have any remote level of intelligence. So let us remove the ever tightening grip of totalitarianism in the UK, and hence save ourselves before it's too late.
Thankyou,
Nathan RJ RocheOn the radio this morning I heard a broadcast by the government, it contained voice... more
