The plentiful sunshine of southern Spain is being harvested to generate electricity day and night
DRIVING through the baking landscape of Almería, it is no mystery why this Spanish province is home to a novel type of power station that generates electricity by harnessing the heat of the sun.
For over 20 years, the Plataforma Solar de Almería, sited on an almost rainless plain in the south of the province, has been at the forefront of research into solar thermal power generation. Helped by Spain's sunny climate and generous government subsidies, this has led to the construction of 10 solar thermal plants across the country in the last three years alone. Some 50 more are planned.
Within the centre, parabolic dishes lie strewn about like huge discarded toys, but the site is dominated by a giant white tower. Thousands of mirrors, known as heliostats, surround it, catching sunlight and focusing it onto a receiver on top of the tower. This concentrated sunlight produces superheated steam that drives a turbine to generate electricity.
Till now, the mainstay of solar thermal power has been the parabolic trough system, in which carefully shaped parabolic mirrors direct solar energy onto glass tubes containing a heat-absorbing fluid. One of the drawbacks of such installations is that to keep costs down they need large areas of flat ground.
With solar towers this is unnecessary. The heliostats can hug the land at different levels and be individually calibrated to beam their rays to the receiver atop the tower.
Another advantage of towers is that they can operate at high temperatures. The heat-absorbing liquid used in the trough system is an oil that can only cope with temperatures up to 400 °C. With the tower there is no need for an intermediate fluid, and steam passing though the receiver is heated directly to around 550 °C. The higher temperature means the heat energy can be converted to electricity more efficiently.
However, because the towers produce steam directly, they cannot store the heat they collect and so stop generating electricity once the sun sets. A new Spanish project, the Gemasolar tower near Seville, may have solved this problem. The 19-megawatt tower will be the first in the world to use a mixture of molten salts to transfer heat from the receiver on top of the tower to a heat exchanger where steam to drive the turbines is generated.
The salt mixture, made up of sodium and potassium nitrates, can operate at the high temperatures generated in a solar tower's receiver. Because the hot molten salt can be stored until the heat it contains is needed, the Gemasolar plant is expected to be able to run for 15 hours without sunlight. The best parabolic trough plants can only manage about half that time.
If all goes well when Gemasolar launches next year, Spain should be able to profit from its scorching climate for some time to come.The plentiful sunshine of southern Spain is being harvested to generate electricity... more

Protests have taken place across Spain calling for the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who is facing extradition from the UK to Sweden for alleged sexual offences.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the British embassy in Madrid calling for him to be freed.
Wikileaks is publishing insights from hundreds of thousands of sensitive US diplomatic and military documents.
The demonstrators believe Mr Assange's detention is politically motivated.
The whistle-blowing website has angered and embarrassed governments around the world through its publication in recent weeks of classified US diplomatic cables.
Mr Assange was detained in London on Tuesday after Sweden secured an international warrant for his arrest.
Prosecutors in Sweden say they want to question him in connection with the sexual offence allegations. He was refused bail by a British court and has said he will fight extradition.
There have also been calls from some in the US for his arrest and prosecution on charges related directly to Wikileaks' activity.
Sensitive issue
While supporters online have mounted cyber-protests against Mr Assange's detention, Saturday's protests were some of the first street demonstrations in support of Wikileaks.
Wearing face masks associated with the "Anonymous" group of hackers - which launched cyber attacks after Mr Assange's arrest in the UK - the crowd in Madrid shouted for his freedom, outside the vast glass tower that houses the British embassy
Many of the demonstrators were angry at some of the revelations in the cables, says the BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Madrid.
These include the suggestion Spain came under pressure to stop a criminal investigation into the killing of Jose Couso, a Spanish cameraman who died when American soldiers fired a tank round into his hotel in Baghdad.
The Free Wikileaks website, which organised the demonstrations, said protests were also planned for other Spanish cities, including Barcelona, Valencia and Seville.
It called for the full restoration of Wikileaks' website, which was denied hosting services by Amazon after the first of the leaked cables were published two weeks ago.
The protest organisers also demanded that Visa and MasterCard restore credit card services because, it said, no one had proven Mr Assange's guilt.

Apparently not content to see its own justice system befouled, the U.S. government has tried to corrupt courts in other countries.
That is one of many nauseating lessons from the recent WikiLeaks dump of cables from the U.S. State Department. U.S. officials, under both the Bush and Obama administrations, have tried to corruptly influence the outcomes of three criminal matters pending in Spain’s national security court, according to a new article from Scott Horton, at Harper’s.
The cases involve the death of a Spanish cameraman from the U.S. shelling of a Baghdad hotel, the torture of Spanish subjects at Guantanomo, and the use of Spanish airfields and bases for extraordinary-renditions flights.
Do U.S. officials want these cases handled in the manner required by our own constitution, which involves due process and equal protection guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment? Not at all. In fact, it appears the U.S. wants the cases to get the kind of treatment they might receive in a banana republic–complete with compromised prosecutors and judges.
Writes Horton:
> These cables reveal a large-scale, closely coordinated effort by the State
> Department to obstruct these criminal investigations. High-ranking U.S. visitors such
> as former Republican Party Chair Mel Martinez, Senator Greg Judd, and Homeland
> Security Secretary Janet Napolitano were corralled into this effort, warning Spanish
> political leaders that the criminal investigations would “be misunderstood” and would
> harm bilateral relations. The U.S. diplomats also sought out and communicated
> directly with judges and prosecutors, attempting to steer the cases into the hands of
> judges of their choosing. The cables also reflect an absolutely extraordinary rapport
> between the Madrid embassy and Spanish prosecutors, who repeatedly appear to
> be doing the embassy’s bidding.
WikiLeaks exposes blatant attempts by U.S. officials to push for judge shopping:
> The cables show that the embassy was briefed in detail about the pending cases,
> receiving information that was not publicly accessible and would have been known
> only to the prosecutors and the magistrates handling the cases. The embassy
> engaged Spanish authorities in detailed discussions about the specific judges
> handling these cases and on at least one occasion extracted a promise from
> prosecutors to seek to have one sensitive case—in which former U.S. attorney
> general Alberto Gonzales, former vice presidential chief of staff David Addington,
> John Yoo, Jay Baybee, Douglas Feith, and William J. Haynes figured as potential
> defendants—reassigned to a judge they considered friendlier to the United States. In
> fact, around the time of the cables in question the prosecutors acted just as the
> cable suggests they would.
This might be one of the most grotesque news reports I’ve ever read. Remember how the Bush administration claimed it was trying to promote democratic principles in the Middle East? Meanwhile, it was promoting blatant unlawfulness in Spanish courts.
Is it any wonder that the Obama administration has taken a “look forward, not backwards” approach to the apparent justice-related crimes of Bush officials? Apparently it’s because the Obama crowd shares the Bush crowd’s warped view on basic matters of right and wrong. And should we be surprised that the Obama administration seems to be scrambling for a method to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange?
Meanwhile, it appears U.S. citizens should be building monuments in Assange’s honor. He might be the last hope for salvaging what’s left of our national integrity.
The state-department cables provide clear proof that the U.S. government, under both Republican and Democratic control, has essentially embraced the dark side. We’ve spent three-plus years at this blog writing about court corruption in Alabama and beyond. Now we learn that our own government has been trying to export that kind of sleaze to other countries.

I was at the beach at lake Temescal in Oakland, California, with my 3 children peacefully enjoying myself. 3 policemen showed up and gave me a citation for nudity even though I was wearing 2 sweaters and a bikini bottom (not a thong). They justified their actions with East Bay Parks regulations that say that you are not allowed to show buttocks at the beach. I was showing buttocks and was in violation according to their rules.
Ordinance 38/Section 405.
NUDITY. No person shall appear, swim, bathe, sunbathe, walk or be in any of the parks, lands, beaches, waters or any place owned, managed, controlled or otherwise under the jurisdiction of the East Bay Regional Park District, in such a manner that the genitals, vulva, pubis, symphysis, pubic hair, buttocks, and cleft, perineum, anus, anal region, or pubic hair region of any person, or any portion of the breast at or below the upper edge of the areola thereof of any female person, is exposed to public view or is not covered by an opaque covering. This subdivision shall not apply to children under the age of 5 years.
This citation was a result of sexual harassment and retaliation by one of the park rangers. Ranger Vernon Jones had previously asked me out and was turned down and 2 days prior to the incident I filed a complaint about him driving too fast in his personal vehicle down a pedestrian path. He called the police on me in retaliation. The policemen kept insisting that it was a member of the public and not a ranger who called them.
A couple weeks later I was given another citation for swimming while the beach was officially closed even though none of the police saw me swim. It was another ranger Cliff Rocha - agianst whom I had also complained in the past - who called the police and convinced them to give me a ticket. Officer Torres insisted on giving me a citation against the will of the other police officers who were present. Officer Torres said the ranger would sign the citation. This citation was so illegal that 5 days later I received a letter from the Alameda County DA saying that my citation was not going to be filed and that there was no need to go to court nor pay the fine.

Spain's biggest ever counterfeit cigarette network has been dismantled in an operation against that led to the seizure of 90 million fake cigarettes and the arrest of six men, the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) said Friday
The investigation saw the OLAF working closely with Spanish Customs to break up one of the largest tobacco rackets in Europe and prevent the loss of 10 million euros in tax revenue.
Spanish Customs launched Operation BALMAN in February when intelligence about suspicious imports from China was provided by OLAF.
Fast and accurate exchanges of information between OLAF and national authorities allowed investigators to track containers of counterfeit cigarettes from China to ports on the east coast of Spain, where they were pushed into the illegal market.
"The excellent work of Spanish Customs has resulted in a victory for European taxpayers and a strong blow against smugglers," said OLAF's acting Director-General Nicholas Ilett. "It shows that proactive information-sharing between OLAF and national authorities is vital in our battle against the illicit trade in tobacco. We fight fraud best when we fight it together."
On October 20, six men were arrested in connection with the investigation after searches on homes and businesses in Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona, Tarragona and Badajoz. Chinese, Polish, and Spanish nationals were among those arrested and charged with smuggling.
They may face also charges relating to money-laundering and infringement of intellectual property rights. The case continues as investigators analyse documents and computers confiscated during the raids.
The illegal tobacco trade has been growing in Spain and the rest of Europe since the global economic crisis hit in 2008. With the recent swing of the political pendulum to the right in this country, one cannot help but recognize that Americans have a very short memory when it comes to history. How quickly people have forgotten who put us where we are today...they blame Obama and the Democrats but the reality is that the Republican Federalist Neocons are responsible for the extremely tough economic times that we are now facing.
History is like a merry-go-round and this film demonstrates just how circular it really is.
Anyone who hates fascism and who loves democracy and freedom will cherish this documentary and will recognize the parallels that existed in the Spanish Civil War and our current polarization in this country between the Right and the Left.
It seems that we have come full circle once again where freedom and liberty are considered communist and socialist, and democracy is seen as a demon that would allow gays to marry, women to have abortions, and morality of the nation to be in decline. Once again we witness how the church is the whore of the government as it meddles in civil life and attempts to dictate morality on its terms and not on the evolved conscience of the human spirit.
This documentary, even though it is a historical document, foreshadows the path down which out country is headed.
The good news is that it lays out strategies and offers lessons to be learned so that we do not make the same mistakes again.
In the words of Bill Bailey "One day we may live in a descent society where there is no such thing as a bomb or a gun, where it would be a criminal offense to allow someone to go hungry. That's the type of society we want. So therefore we've got to keep going. To give up now would be the worst form of cowardice that I could think of."
Abe Osherhoff characterizes the brigades as having fought the Good Fight, however he cautions..."The whole thing is a huge metaphor for the human condition. Is it possible to fight the good fight? You can't really answer that question, but it raises it very sharply! It was a good fight, THE GOOD FIGHT...but we lost."

A 10-year-old girl from Romania has given birth in southern Spain, officials in the region have said.
The girl gave birth to a daughter last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, said Andalucia's social affairs minister Micaela Navarro.
Officials are deciding whether the mother and her family can keep custody, Ms Navarro said.
The father of the baby is also believed to be a minor, aged 13, who is still in Romania, Spanish media have said.
I think at 13 there is a sufficient age difference to call the father a child abuser, yes 13 is young, but what person at that age has sex with a 9 year old, he should be kept away from young girls, and the parents of both the father and mother should be locked up for letting this happen, this story makes me sick.
