This is an outrage. Now I know why Bush signed the bill that was just passed in the Congress to raise fuel standards to 35 mpg by 2020... because it isn't as stringent as what California and 12 other states would have enforced, which they cannot do now because of the waiver denial which is the first EPA waiver denial in 40 years. Once again, Bush cronies stand up for the corporations over the health and safety of the people and this planet. Perhaps Mr. Johnson needs to be reminded of what EPA stands for: Environmental PROTECTION Agency. I've already sent him my message. I hope you do too. This is an outrage. FUQING, China - Here in southern China, beneath the looming mountains of Fujian Province, lie dozens of enormous ponds filled with murky brown water and teeming with eels, shrimp and tilapia, much of it destined for markets in Japan and the West.
Fuqing is one of the centers of a booming industry that over two decades has transformed this country into the biggest producer and exporter of seafood in the world, and the fastest-growing supplier to the United States.
This is Part VIII of "CHOKING ON GROWTH"
A series of articles and multimedia examining the human toll, global impact and political challenge of China's epic pollution crisis by The New York Times.

Boycotting bottled water, sodas and other unnecessary items in plastic will go a long way in my view in saving this planet from drowning and choking itself. I have boycotted all drinks in plastic bottles, plastic bags, and other useless plastic items and urge others to do the same. The state I live in is now considering doing away with plastic bags in stores. More and more cities and countries are seeing the truth about bottled water. It seems people are waking up to the destruction it does to this planet. And doing this not only saves on trash and pollution, it saves other species that eat the plastic in our waterways and die from it and also saves other resources. It is also the moral thing to do in light of the fact that over one billion people on this planet do not even have a potable source of water. To then think that people here only drink it to look fashionable actually makes me ill. We as a nation have a huge waking up to experience regarding our priorities and world view. This is a great step in that direction.Boycotting bottled water, sodas and other unnecessary items in plastic will go a long... more
Brushing aside a veto threat from the White House, the House passed a package of energy measures on Thursday that includes a 40 percent increase in fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks sold in the United States. But the measure stalled today in the Senate, as expected.
The bills supporters say it will reduce the nations dependence on imported oil, jump-start development of clean-energy technologies and sharply reduce the nations production of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide.
But the complex and costly bill faces the prospect of a radical rewrite in the Senate because of opposition there to two provisions: $21 billion in new taxes, mostly on the oil industry, and a mandate that electric utilities must generate 15 percent of their power from alternative sources, like wind or solar. The White House threatened to veto the bill if the final version contains those or several other provisions passed by the House.

Please contact Congress and tell them to stop trying to push this down our throats in their effort to hold on to the status quo and maintain their campaign contributions while trying to make us believe they care about this planet. There is no such thing as clean coal and liquid coal is NOT a clean option. They would dare to include this in the Farm Bill and the Energy Bill yet they strip out tax incentives for alternate energy. There is something VERY wrong with the priorities and mindset of this Congress, and we must become much more vocal regarding the health of this planet, ourselves, and our children. Those who pick the gold bars over this planet are making a false choice. Liquid coal means double the global warming pollution...3 times the water usage...23% more mining...Coal kills. Please contact Congress and tell them to stop trying to push this down our throats in... more

One theory is that pollution, perhaps linked to industrialization in China, is helping create more algae in the sea. The algae are food for plankton, which is food for jellyfish. A fear among scientists is that the creatures are multiplying in a "jellyfish spiral." The overfishing off China has led to fewer plankton-eating fish, leaving more plankton for the jellyfish to suck up. This growing army of jellyfish then also eats fish eggs, resulting in even fewer fish. Check out the video on the WSJ link above. One theory is that pollution, perhaps linked to industrialization in China, is helping... more
National Day of Mourning Statement from Leonard Peltier:
November 22, 2007
Greetings my Relations, As I sit here in my cell, thinking about you, and gathering my thoughts, I can't help but appreciate you remembering me.
I was told just the other day that people in Oklahoma protested Oklahoma's 100 year celebration of its statehood.
They protested or demonstrated and also celebrated their 100 years of survival of an adversed government that has violated all treaties and has gained control of most of their land.
I support those Indian people.
It also brings to mind those who - like Columbus came and did the same, take our lands, and also what has happened to all people all over the world- the Jews, the Palestians, as well as other indigenous countries and peoples.
Yet I have to say that America shares most of the responsibility to do the right thing.
What happened to the teachings or commandments of: Thou shall not lie Thou shall not kill Thou shall not steal
I can't remember all the commandments but what I do know is They have lied They have killed They have stolen.
They have mistreated our Mother- our Mother Earth, our rivers, our land, the air we breathe and the water we drink.
I consider global warming the wrong that has been done to our people.
Even the Mexican people state in their own way, "We did not cross the border, the border crossed us". The Mexican people are Indian people.
I have no doubt the Indian people of South America, North America, Central American will join in unison to make all the America's better.
A circle of Life is what dictates that the earth shall renew itself every spring.
We have said this for generations.
Go back and read our Elders sayings as we have been trying to tell Europeans that came here- to honor our traditional ways and to honor our Mother Earth and keep the Circle of Life.
Chief Seattle said: "Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect." Chief Seattle, 1855
This is just one of the many quotations from our ancestors.
Now today we have global warming.
We take no pride of solace in saying " We told you so."
But we do hope that the people of Europe and all around the world will start looking at the Native way of life.
Our Elders teach us that when we take from this earth, we must give back.
There is no greater resource on the face of this earth than our children.
America is leading in the wrongful influence of our youth.
Wrong medicine is being offered to our youth, commonly called alcohol and drugs.
It is up to each one of us, to get involved and make a difference in a positive way.
It is time to give back to our children.
I encourage each of you to take it upon yourself to stand up and find someway to help our youth.
The youth of the world are in jeopardy; let us not rob future generations of their future.
The greatest symbol of the Creator is the circle.
I encourage each of you to make the circle complete- the sacred cycle of the family, the cycle of the seasons, your personal cycle of life make them as strong as possible spiritually, mentally and physically.
Stay strong and never, never give up.
I can not say it enough or express my appreciation to each of you how much I appreciate those of you who came here today to remember me and to listen to what this prisoner has to say.
Again I simply say,
Thank you In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, Leonard Peltier

Are vapor trails from aircraft influencing the climate, and if so, should we worry?
I've always wanted to hate contrails, the "condensation trails" streaming out from behind jets. They're man-made. They force lines on nature, which knows no lines. They arise out of pollution, and they generate visual pollutionaircraft graffiti that can erase blue from the sky and light from the sun. All good reasons to despise these artificial clouds.
But I don't. I've always been drawn to them. When I see one above, I like to run my eye along its length until I find the plane, a tiny silver toy. I like to wonder at the blank space between the plane and the start of the contrailemptiness full of potentialand then to see the churning new cloud as it forms, a tumbling cascade. When the roiling slows and the newborn cloud settles into a contrail proper, I admire its perfection: a straight white line sharply etched against the blue. Even when numerous contrails made fat by the wind crisscross the sky, I don't mind.
Well, I might now. After a lifetime of enjoying contrails, it came as a surprise to me to learn recently that something so ephemeral may not be a harmless by-product of the jet age but may in fact impact the climate. This is of particular concern in well-traveled air corridors, where contrails by the hundreds can spread into man-made cirrus clouds that can both block sunlight from reaching the Earth and trap radiated heat from escaping to space.
Whether contrails cause a net cooling or a net warming, even whether their effect is something to worry about, remains unclear. But with air traffic expected to double or even triple by 2050, leading contrail researchers say the influence of these artificial clouds cannot be ignored. For me, weighing an option also means that the negative repercussions must be truthfully weighed in proportion to the positive. In the case of Three Gorges Dam which the Chinese government has touted as a marvel of engineering in it's quest to satisfy its rapacious need for energy, it is turning into an ecological disaster with the negative outweighing the positive. And therein lies the dilemma of our age. How can we address the climate crisis effectively if we do not or refuse to address the moral questions involved in our decisions? When we continue to prefer the old ways which are expensive and destructive to new ways which can actually improve the quality of life? Do those decisions need to always lead to displacement of millions of people? To the destruction of traditional and sacred lands? To the extinction of other species and intrusion upon their ecosystems? This is also where we see the intersection of morality and politics, and as we see with the construction of this dam as with so many other projects like this in other countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, and India when the politics overtakes the moral considerations. If we are to see any real progress in mitigating the effects of climate change, we cannot continue to rely on old ways to deal with new situations. For me, weighing an option also means that the negative repercussions must be... more
"The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a federal transportation agency on Thursday to rewrite its fuel economy standards for many SUVs, minivans and light trucks, arguing that the new rules are inadequate in part because they fail to properly assess the risk of global warming.
