The Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar", shouted by the Fort Hood killer Major Nidal Malik Hasan before he opened fire, is known as the takbir and is used by Muslims to express a wide range of emotions.
Translated as "God is great", it can be used to express delight and euphoria or as a war cry during battles.
It is also said during each stage of both obligatory prayers, which are supposed to be performed five times a day, and supererogatory prayers, which are said at will.
The Muslim call to prayer, or adhan, and commence to the prayer, or iqama, also contains the phrase, which is heard in cities all over the Muslim world.
In the Islamic world, instead of applause, often someone will shout "takbir" and the crowd will respond "Allahu Akbar" in chorus.
It can also be used as a protest. In the aftermath of the 2009 Iranian presidential election many people shouted it for an hour between 10pm and 11pm every day for nine days to show their anger at the result.
The takbir is also included on the flags of many Arabic nations. It is written on the centre of the flag of Iraq, 22 times along the borders of the central white stripe on the flag of Iran, and beneath the Shahadah in the 2004 draft constitution of Afghanistan in white script on the central red background.
Soldiers who witnessed the shooting rampage that killed 13 people at Fort Hood military base in Texas have reported that gunman Major Nidal Malik Hasan shouted "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire.

I-4 Eastbound has been shut down in downtown Orlando.
A picture began to emerge Thursday of the suspect in the Fort Hood shootings as a mental health professional who worked to help others in high-stress situations.
The gunman was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a law enforcement source told CNN. Hasan's office at the base's Darnall Army Medical Center is about a mile from the shootings, where 13 people were killed and 30 were wounded.
Hasan had been telling his family since 2001 that he wanted to get out of the military, said a spokeswoman for his cousin, Nader Hasan. Hasan told his family he had been taunted after the September 11 attacks, the spokeswoman said.
"He was mortified by the idea of having to deploy," his cousin told the New York Times. "He had people telling him on a daily basis the horrors they saw over there."
An owner of a 7-Eleven at Fort Hood said Hasan -- whom he knows as "Major Nidal" -- came in for coffee and hash browns most mornings, including the morning of the shootings. Surveillance video from the store obtained by CNN shows a man who according to the store owner is Hasan at the cashier's counter at about 6:20 a.m. Thursday, about seven hours before the mass shooting. He was carrying a beverage and dressed in traditional Arab garb. Another surveillance video from Tuesday showed the man in scrubs.

Police received a call from the landlord who discovered the bodies after a tenant complained about the foul odor emanating from room #803. The crime occurred in an eight-story apartment building where most of the residents worked in a nearby clothing factory.
According to the landlord, he and a tenant knocked on the door to the apartment, but no one answered. They kicked the door down and the smell that filled their nostrils almost made both of them faint dead away to the ground.
The dazed girl stood silently amid clutter and assorted body parts that were scattered across the floor and were later carried out of the apartment in boxes.
One neighbor reported that the male victim worked nearby, driving a licensed truck for shipping fabrics. An automobile accident forced him to quit his job and remain at home. The wife and he quarreled a great deal and it was common knowledge that they were headed for a divorce.
Two large fruit knives and a hammer are believed to be the murder weapons. The 18-year old daughter, Qi Ping, confessed to the crime, stating her motive was their impending divorce. According to news sources, the girl sat with the corpses for 4 days.
“I told my dad and mom to stop fighting, stop mentioning divorce, but mom was still nagging, nonstop. I picked up an old plastic bag and put it over her head, then tied up her hands behind her back so she could not move. After half an hour, I noticed she stopped breathing,” said the daughter in her own demented words.
She killed her father the same way, cut the corpses into pieces, placed them in large plastic bags and waited for the chance to dump them without being noticed.
The girl was very cooperative during the police interrogation and basically confessed to the crime, admitting that the thought of killing her parents had been in her head for a long time.
Most of the tenants living on the same floor where the crime was committed have moved out of the building as well as some from the lower floors.

Michael Joseph Shirley, 29, last known address 142 Cheri Circle, Whitwell, TN is wanted for the beating and stabbing death of 27-year-old Brandi Duba. Law enforcement authorities discovered Dubas body on November 3, 2009 in the residence she shared with the suspect. There were two small children sleeping in the living room when her body was found in a bedroom. The victims vehicle was also discovered burned and abandoned a short distance from the home.
Shirley has violent criminal history dating back to 1999 that includes theft, drug charges, evading arrest, assaulting a police officer, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and DUI. We also reviewed Shirley's TBI arrest record. It is ten pages long, and lists many charges, including 3 felony convictions. Marion County Chief Detective Gene Hargis says he also had a felony conviction in Dade County, Ga. Those convictions include theft, burglary, evading arrest, and vehicular assault. He got out of Brushy Mountain State Prison about six months ago, serving about 5 years of a 7 year sentence.
Shirley is described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is approximately 6'3", weighs 225 lbs and has numerous tattoos including a swastika on his back.

CLEVELAND — For the past few years, neighbors assumed the foul smell enveloping their street corner had been coming from a brick building where workers churned out sausage and head cheese.
It got so bad that the owners of Ray's Sausage replaced their sewer line and grease traps. Now they know the odor was coming from a three-story house next door where the decomposing bodies of six women were found.
A city councilman on Tuesday said he and other community leaders want an investigation into whether police and health inspectors missed any signs that could have tipped them off to the bodies inside the house where convicted rapist Anthony Sowell lived.
Councilman Zack Reed, whose mother lives a block from the area, said he called the city health department on more than one occasion.
"What happened from there, we don't know," he said. "It was no secret that there was a foul odor. We don't want to point fingers, but clearly something could have been done differently."
Police discovered the bodies Thursday after a woman reported being raped at Sowell's home. The 50-year-old Sowell is being held in jail on an arrest warrant, but he hasn't been charged in the rape investigation or in connection with the bodies. Cleveland police Chief Michael McGrath planned to give an update on the investigation Tuesday evening.
He is a registered sex offender and required to check in regularly at the sheriff's office. Officers didn't have the right to enter his house, but they would stop by to make sure he was there. Their most recent visit was Sept. 22, just hours before the woman reported being raped.
Reed said he can't imagine how police officers and sheriff's deputies could have missed the smell. His office records show that he called the health department in 2007 after a resident told him about an odor that "smelled like a dead body," he said.
One of the bodies was found in a shallow grave in the backyard. The rest were inside the house — one in the basement, two in the third-floor living room and two in an upstairs crawl space, said police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho.
The bodies could have been there anywhere from weeks to months to years, said Powell Caesar, a spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner.
All the victims were women and five were strangled.
On Tuesday, detectives brought in cadaver dogs and digging equipment to scour the home and backyard, looking for evidence to connect Sowell to the bodies, Stacho said.
Authorities also were searching vacant homes within a few miles of the home, which sat in a crowded inner-city neighborhood of mostly older houses. Police did not say Tuesday why they were searching the vacant homes or indicate whether they believe more bodies could be found.
Neighbors are bracing for what could be inside a boarded-up home across the street and a shuttered school a block away.
"We hope they don't find anymore," said Renee Cash, whose family has operated the sausage company for 57 years.
About four years ago, she and other workers started noticing a smell that was so bad on some days that it forced them to leave their office.
"In the summertime, it was gross," Cash said. "You could always smell it. It smelled like something rotten."
They poured bleach down the sewer in the basement and eventually had it replaced. Health inspectors thought the meat processing was to blame, she said.

Six women found dead at a Cleveland, Ohio, home appeared to have been strangled, and their decomposing bodies could have been lying there for "weeks, if not months or years," a coroner told CNN on Saturday.
Police discovered the bodies at the home of Anthony Sowell, a 50-year-old convicted rapist, after they tried to serve an arrest and search warrant for him related to a sexual assault investigation.
On Thursday, detectives from the department's sex-crimes unit and members of its SWAT team went to Sowell's home to execute the warrant and to arrest the suspect, but he was nowhere to be found, Cleveland Police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho said.
Five female victims were found inside the home, and another female body was discovered outside the home, said Cuyahoga County Coroner Frank Miller III.
Miller's office had yet to identify the victims, who all died of "homicidal violence," he said.
"They were mostly strangled, it appears," he said.
Stacho said a tipster told officers of Sowell's whereabouts and police arrested him Saturday afternoon as he walked on a street near the 4th District Police Headquarters.
About a month ago, a woman accused Sowell of rape and felonious assault, Stacho said Friday.
"Once we were able to get the cooperation of the victim, we secured an arrest warrant for Mr. Sowell and subsequently a search warrant for his premises," Stacho said.
Officers serving the warrants Thursday discovered two badly decomposed bodies on the third floor of the house, Stacho said. A subsequent search revealed what appeared to be a freshly dug grave under the stairs in the basement, he said.
On Friday, investigators returned to the house, dug up the grave and found a third body, he said.
A further search of the house and property found two more bodies in a crawl space, and a sixth body was found in a shallow grave outside the home, Stacho said.
Five different burial methods were used on the victims, and the bodies were in varying states of decomposition, Miller said, making it difficult to determine the ages of the victims. He added that the states of the bodies made it hard to tell how long they had lain in the makeshift graves.
"It's really very difficult to tell," Miller said. "It's been some time, I would say probably at least weeks, if not months or years."
Stacho said Sowell makes his living as a "scrapper."
"He walks around and picks up scrap metal and takes it to junkyards to make a few pennies."
Sowell was convicted for a 1989 rape for which he was imprisoned from 1990 to 2005, Stacho said.

In THE ROOST — his tidy little horror film about a group of travelers threatened by some really nasty bats — he added a wraparound featuring Tom Noonan in tacky butler drag, holding forth in front of a cardboard set as host of a local Saturday Night Chiller Feature broadcast. For THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL — which reunites West with Noonan and adds in Mary Woronov for good measure — it’s a blast from the eighties, complete with a really gnarly font and a freeze-frame for the opening titles.
Elbow-in-the-ribs tip-offs aside, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL — about a college student (Jocelin Donahue) who goes to an isolated abode for a babysitter gig and (surprise!) encounters more than she bargained for, including Noonan and Woronov as her clients — shows off West’s skill at building atmosphere and his predilection for eerie nuance over gross-out gore. The SAW franchise (and if any series deserves the term “franchise,” it’s that one) may be more efficient in logging a body count, but HOUSE is the kind of film that reminds you how cool it is to settle back and just let the dread soak in.

Brazyiak is a founding member of the West side Gangsta Bloods and is believed to be involved in upwards of 80 or more homicides committed in the city. Brazyiak is 6'2, thin, light skinned african american or latino with long hair. An eBay auction planned by abortion opponents to raise money for the man accused of killing Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller will not be permitted, company officials said Tuesday.
“Based on the details we know about the anticipated listings, we believe these would violate our policy regarding offensive material,” the company said in a statement to The Kansas City Star. “EBay will not permit the items in question to be posted to the eBay site, and they will be removed if they are posted.”
The announcement came the same day that Tiller’s family implored eBay to prevent the auction.
“These materials contain hate messages, glorify violence against abortion doctors who provide constitutionally protected medical services, and instruct on means of violence, including bombing, of abortion clinics,” said Lee Thompson, an attorney for the Tiller family, in a letter sent to eBay on Tuesday and approved by Tiller’s widow, Jeanne Tiller.
“We urge you to deny access to the resources of eBay for this reprehensible and vile ‘auction.’ ”
The auction was intended to raise money for the defense of Scott Roeder, who is charged with first-degree murder in Tiller’s death and is scheduled to go on trial in January. Currently, Roeder is being represented by public defenders.
Roeder’s supporters are encouraging him to use a “necessity defense,” saying that Tiller’s killing on May 31 was an act of justifiable homicide. Other anti-abortion activists charged with violent crimes have tried to use such a defense, but with little success.
Those working on the fundraiser said banning the auction was a violation of their rights.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Three masked members of a militant Islamist group in Somalia last week shot and killed a Somali Christian who declined to wear a veil as prescribed by Muslim custom, according to a Christian source in Somalia.
Members of the comparatively “moderate” Suna Waljameca group killed Amina Muse Ali, 45, on Oct. 19 at 9:30 p.m. in her home in Galkayo, in Somalia’s autonomous Puntland region, said the source who requested anonymity for security reasons.
Ali had told Christian leaders that she had received several threats from members of Suna Waljameca for not wearing a veil, symbolic of adherence to Islam. She had said members of the group had long monitored her movements because they suspected she was a Christian.
The source said Ali had called him on Oct. 4 saying, “My life is in danger. I am warned of dire consequences if I continue to live without putting on the veil. I need prayers from the fellowship.”
“I was shocked beyond words when I received the news that she had been shot dead,” the source in Somalia told Compass by telephone. “I wished I could have recalled her to my location. We have lost a long-serving Christian.”
Ali had come to Galkayo from Jilib, 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Kismayo, in 2007. She arrived in Puntland at the invitation of a close friend, Saynab Warsame of the Darod clan, when the Islamic extremist group al Shabaab invaded Kismayo, the source said. Warsame was born in Kismayo and had lived in Jilib but moved to Puntland when war broke out in 1991.
The source said it is not known if even Warsame knew of Ali’s conversion from Islam to Christianity.
“She might not have known, because Warsame is not a Christian,” he said.
In 1997 Ali, an orphan and unmarried, joined the Somali Christian Brothers’ Organization, a movement commonly known as the Somali Community-Based Organization. As such she had been an active member of the underground church in the Lower Juba region.

This is a story of egregious tragedy, not only for the loved ones involved but for all of us who exist in a social environment, infiltrated by murderous monsters. This horror may not have happened if we all considered our surroundings to be parallel to the darkness of dense jungles where meat eaters lurk behind the thickness of forestry waiting their next gorge. Without envisioning this comparable, life appears orderly and free of danger.
Within the food chain, hunger is the motivator to kill. It's not called murder but it is the same. Something must die in order to satisfy the needs of a predator. When a youngling is cut away from the protection of the herd, a beast of prey will spot, immediately the vulnerability of this life form and direct all its attention towards a capture. What happened to this child is the same. A monster, perhaps not even on its usual hunt, zeroed in on a little girl, alone, away from any protection and used its cunning to lure her into its clutches.
It didn't happen to my child but it did, to someone who lived in my community. His name was Adam Walsh and he was a year younger than my own. The Walsh's horrible story, could have been mine. I, many times frequented the same place as Adam and his mom and I forever shuddered to think it my child who was cut from the herd and open to attack.
We as a society should warn our children and ourselves that we are but one or two seconds from something so heinous that our lives would never recover. Whenever our children leave the safety of our sight, we should tell them, "Never allow a stranger to talk lies, in order to hurt you. Scream, cry, run and fight if need be, not to be taken by anyone.” Every child, every young person who falls victim to the savages amongst us, must be a reminder that we live in a jungle of predators but worse, these fiends look like us, so we have to be even more vigilant than jungle prey. I hope a capture will take place and we will have one less sick degenerate on our streets. But realize, it will not make us safer because somewhere there is another waiting, to take its place.
