Ovaseaz Records: Making Waves

There was a time, not so long ago, when music industry moguls were convinced that the hip hop/rap music genre was a passing fad that would not have a long shelf life. Beyond that, many of these industry giants felt that this particular genre would stay nestled on the street corners, and in the hoods of American ghettos. Today, with music stores abandoned, and music shelves left barren, corporate giants of the music industry are left scratching their heads, as hip hop/rap music has not only maintained itself, but continues to thrive and grow, in spite of a music industry that has deteriorated to a skeleton of what it once was. In fact, not only has the hip hop/rap genre survived the death of the music industry as it was once known, it has in fact grown beyond the borders and boundary lines of America’s inner cities, becoming a world wide and international movement, that encompasses hip hop/rap not only as a musical genre, but as a culture and way of life. Today, hip hop/rap music stands solid and independent; a maverick genre, playing a leading role in the production of what the future of the music industry will be.

Enter stage left: Ovaseaz Records. A small, independent record label doing big things, Ovaseaz Records is the brainchild of Australian-born hip-hop aficionados Big Ben and Big Willie Will. A duo whose vision for the label is one that is international in scale, while very pointed in scope. Their goal? To revive the 90’s West Coast Rap movement with a contemporary flair, recognizing that what is presently known as “hip hop” has changed from what “OG’s” in the industry are accustomed to. Ovaseaz Records takes a unique approach, digging up the relics of West Coast hip hop and bringing them back to the spotlight with a new sound that is still reminiscent of what is considered that “Classic West Coast,” sound.

“Ovaseaz is bringing nothing but the realist,” says co-founder, Big Ben, “our goal is to work with many of the West Coast pioneers, using exclusive new music and still keep that 90’s flavor alive.” One of the primary tools utilized by Ovaseaz to manifest their vision is the Internet. “We want to make our music very accessible to the world,” says Big Willie Will, CEO of the label, “through a wide-range of platforms available online, our approach thrives on the inclusion of video and film—never before seen footage of the original pioneers, working and discussing the truth about the music industry.”

Ovaseaz Records has a vision to show that all around the world, in every country and city, there’s a hood where people have to hustle every day for survival. Their plan is to provide these people with a soundtrack that reflects their experience. The first of these “soundtracks” includes a solo album featuring Rappin 4-Tay (of Too Short fame) called, “Exported Game.” Their upcoming releases include an EP and solo album featuring Big Prodeje, of South Central Cartel (SCC) notoriety (one of the realest West Coast Gangsta rap groups from the 90’s era). Their first release with Big Prodeje is an EP, “Everythang Hood,” featuring Big Prodeje, along with other SCC members, Cali Pitts and L.V (“Gangsta’s Paradise”). Although Ovaseaz is an up and coming independent label, it is still making moves in a major way. At the end of the day, every hustler in the hood needs a soundtrack to ride and hustle to…and Ovaseaz is the label that is committed to providing just that.

With the release of the first single, “Big Thangz,” off of the upcoming EP, “Everythang Hood,” featuring Big Prodeje of South Central Cartel, the song’s title and content reflect precisely what Ovaseaz Records intends to do.

Chase is usually involved in a song from the conception of the beat all the way to the final mixing and mastering Process. “Chase: This improves the quality of the music…” At many times, Chase will simply come up with a song in his head, without any sort of pre-production. “Chase: I don’t know where it comes from, it just happens, and I can hear the instrumental and everything at once…”

Where: Chase is ready to begin with home City Toronto, but has already completed collaborations with artists in Chicago and New York. This speaks volumes to the commitment that chase has to the craft. “Chase: A lot of people take Promotional blogs for granted, these are the vehicles that allow new artists a chance to be heard.

Why: With music at a revolutionary point, there is no better timing for an artist like Chase. A lot of people are losing faith in real music and with that we have seen a culture which is reluctant to buy albums because there is no actual faith in the artist’s talent beyond their single. Chase recognizes this gap and believes we need to go back to packaging pictures and stories of our lives in some type of order. There must be a flow to the overall body of the work rather than just a bunch of material slapped together.
