On Thursday, May 24, 2012 Attorney General Kamala D. Harris announced that two Los Angeles residents have each been sentenced to 300 days in county jail and 3 years probation for selling counterfeit CDs containing popular music.
Juan Lucas Camacho, 39, and Jose Pablo Almaraz, 38, each pled guilty to one felony count of failure to disclose the origin of a recording that they offered for sale. Camacho had been convicted in 2008 for a similar crime. They were sentenced on May 21 in Los Angeles Superior Court.
“Copyright theft like this infringes upon the rights of writers, musicians, and producers,” said Attorney General Harris. “California’s eCrime Unit is dedicated to prosecuting cases involving the trafficking of intellectual property, whether online or on the street.”

A few months before Guns N' Roses long-anticipated "Chinese Democracy" was released, Kevin "Skwerl" Cogill leaked a few of its tracks to his website. Then the FBI invaded his house and all hell broke loose. The week of his sentencing, he sat down with infoMania's Ben Hoffman to discuss how it all went down.
The infoMania Tech Report is a weekly segment where technology guru Ben Hoffman takes a look at the newest tech products, gadgets and video games. It has been called "the funniest tech show on the web." (No source for that quote is available at this time. In fact, there's a good chance it was made up.) For more Ben visit http://current.com/techreport/ and Current TV.

Piracy doesn't seem to give new bands exposure, it is claimed
The era of file-sharing has not increased the exposure of new artists, according to a new study.
According to a study commissioned by royalties body PRS, the most-pirated tracks on the internet tend to be those already at the top of the charts. The organisation claims that this trend only serves to make popular stars even more popular, reports BBC News

It’s not only American politicians who can rankle rock stars by playing their music: MGMT, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock duo, has demanded that France’s Union for a Popular Movement party compensate the band for using its song “Kids,” Agence France-Presse reported. The Union for a Popular Movement, the party of President Nicolas Sarkozy, played the song at its national congress in January, as well as two online videos and at a public function for the party leader, Xavier Bertrand. The party’s public relations firm said the use of the song was an unintentional mistake, and has offered the band one euro (approximately $1.28) in symbolic damages; a lawyer for the band has threatened to sue. Next week, the French parliament will consider a bill that would impose stronger penalties for illegal file-sharing and online piracy.

Richard Patrick, Filter’s (hybrid) driving force, is frustrated. With one man down (the Webmaster of a fan site), and an ex-band member currently on the frontline in Iraq, what’s going on in the Middle East is less remote for him than for most. So, while supporting our troops, he’s speaking out against the war, but feels his cries of protest on Filter's May 2008 album release Anthems For The Damned are lost on a nation that downloads everything and values little.
In 2002 General Motors ironically launched their gas-guzzling H2 to the sounds of Filter’s “The Only Way (Is The Wrong Way).” In 2003, to fuel a hunger for democracy –– and oil ––America invaded Iraq. With our government, economy, environment –– and music industry –– in crisis, Richard talks about how he reconciles his need to make a living with his own value system. But let’s take care of the prerequisite business first:
