Likely overlooked by most in entertainment news this weekend was the death of Ken Ober at the age of 52. Ober had been working in Hollywood for more than 20 years, more recently working as a producer and writer.
However, for those of us who watched MTV as a “music television” station whose content was based almost entirely on music videos or shows based around music videos, Ken Ober was the straight man on one of the first shows that not only addressed pop culture but was based entirely around it, Remote Control. Again, for the under-25 set, this may be hard to comprehend, but MTV in the 1980s was basically a visual radio. There were a smattering of hosts (”VJs”) that would sometimes be seen (but were often just voiceovers while an MTV animation played) and the occasional show based on music videos (like the Top 20 Video Countdown, which went over the top videos of the week; Dial MTV, which was the precursor for TRL but with Adam Curry in front of a greeenscreen instead of a live studio audience, and various genre-related shows like 120 Minutes for alternative music, Headbangers Ball for hard rock and metal, and Yo! MTV Raps for hip-hop.) Occasionally you’d have stoic Kurt Loder pop in with a little bit of music news, but that was pretty much it.

This article investigates whether or not DJ AM's involvement in the MTV series 'Gone Too Far', which showcased him attempting to help drug addicts in their rehab process, contributed to his untimely death. The article speaks of several times when AM was visibly struggling with his own addictions while trying to help others with theirs, at one point picking up a crack pipe to tell someone that it was dangerous, and then continuing to hold it and stare at it once the cameras stopped rolling. It's a really interesting, informative article that makes you wonder if MTV should have let a recovering addict become so exposed to addiction. It hasn't been determined whether or not the song will make it onto Lupe Fiasco's upcoming studio album, L.A.S.E.R.S, but the recently-leaked Lupe track sampling "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix is making waves nevertheless. Rumor has it that the song is Lupe's response to not being listed among MTV's top ten "Hottest MCs [of] 2009" list, but there's also no real proof there either.
Regardless of the track's purpose, it's a bold move. Has Lupe done Jimi justice or is he in over his head?
Multi-Platinum Producer-Big K.O.’s GrooveMaker Hip-Hop Song!
"GrooveMaker is the future of loop-based producing/composing!"
From the IK Interview with Big K.O. (aka Kareem Denis), September 22, 2009:
How do you feel about the music industry from a producer's perspective, and what was your first impression of GrooveMaker?
"Today musicians need to be able to compose on the fly in any situation, at any time. The ability to turn your musical ideas to a reality quickly can be the determining factor to whether you get the job or not. This weekend, I got the opportunity to use the GrooveMaker application for the iPhone. Knowing IK's reputation for incredible sounding, and rock-solid performing products. I was excited to see what this app had to offer."
"The interface wasn't cluttered and made work flow easy, and more importantly fun. Don't be mislead by great looks, GrooveMaker is a high-quality app that pros and new composers alike will find useful for their everyday composing needs. I downloaded GrooveMaker Hip-Hop from iTunes, easily downloaded and installed on my iPhone 3G."
What did you think about the sounds of GrooveMaker Hip-Hop?
"Let me say the Sound Gurus at IK didn't skimp on the quality of these loops. From hard-hitting drums, smooth pads, to woofer rattling bass and sweeping synth arpeggios...only the makers of award-winning products like SampleTank and Miroslav Philharmonik could bring you such a stunning palette of sounds to work with. I was impressed by the organization of the sounds; high hats, tambourines etc were in the percussion folder where you expect them to be. This made working smooth, as I was able to create without scrolling pages of sounds. There were no hang-ups to hinder my creative flow. The ability to solo, mute, or pan sounds in real time was incredible! I was literally creating a mix as I went along."
Where were you when you were making beats with GrooveMaker Hip-Hop?
"I was picking up a friend from the airport, and during my wait I was able to get ideas down. GrooveMaker is the ultimate on-the-go creative tool I've used hands down! The great part was getting in the car and running a line out into my car's stereo system. It's like having a mobile studio on wheels. By the time I got home I had 4 Ideas laid down. I immediately called my partner Joey P and had him download GrooveMaker too. By the next morning we both had over 10 GrooveMaker songs each done. Including the one called 'No Return'. The best part about it is I'm able to bounce down these songs to MP3's to import into my studio's DAW for further tweaking, mixing, and mastering using IK products like T-RackS 3. From idea, to reality within minutes. The ultimate in high quality composing on the go…GrooveMaker is the future of loop-based producing/composing!"
