Way of the Puck, a new documentary feature film about world-class air hockey, has been receiving unanimously positive reviews since its release on DVD two weeks ago. The movie gives voice to the little-seen subculture of competitive air hockey and the passionate personalities that surround it.
“It’s nice to see that the film is striking a particular chord in audiences,” says director Eric D. Anderson, who was once ranked twenty-fourth in the world. “There’s something about the outsider nature of air hockey players and their passion that is really resonating with viewers. And plus world-class air hockey is so great to watch, of course.”
Andrea Rothe at Chud.com gives Way of the Puck 9.5 out of 10 stars. “Anderson tells a great story,” she writes. “And he continually points one back to the history, and forward to the unpromising future of the sport, allowing sport itself taking on a humanity and lifetime of its own that is worth telling.
Tom Hoeler at JustPressPlay.com writes: "A love letter to a disappearing hobby, it is absolutely one of those films that embodies the old critique ‘you’ll laugh, you’ll cry.’ Either way, you won’t soon forget the time spent with these puckheads."
"It's an intriguing look at something most of us are familiar with but that we don't really think about much anymore,” writes Clark Douglas at DVDVerdict.com. “ A unique game that has been fighting to survive for decades now. Good as this stuff is, it's the affecting look at the men who truly love the sport that makes Way of the Puck worth a look."
Seth Gordon, director of King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters concurs. Way of the Puck has “wonderful characters” and a “fun story” he says.
The Way of the Puck DVD is available for sale through the film’s website www.wayofthepuck.com and at Amazon. In the coming months the film will widen its distribution scope and be available elsewhere to buy, download, and stream.Way of the Puck, a new documentary feature film about world-class air hockey, has been... more

"Community" star Joel McHale has been tapped to host the 2011 edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards on IFC, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"The Soup" host follows two British comedians, Eddie Izzard and Steve Coogan, who were both panned for their respective performances as host. Other past hosts include "The Office's" Rainn Wilson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Silverman, and eccentric filmmaker John Waters.
McHale’s “quick wit, talent and charm makes him a perfect fit for our audiences,” said Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson in a press release.
Though McHale only has a handful of film credits on his resume (including last year's "The Informant!") the actor/comedian already has several high profile roles lined up for 2011...

“Last Minutes with Oden” is a deeply engaging, extremely heart-wrenching 6-minute documentary short film directed by Eliot Rausch. The film tells a story about an ex-convict who is saying a final farewell to his best friend, the man’s last minutes with his dog before he has to have it euthanized for health reasons. The documentary is a beautiful elegy that calls attention to certain heartbreaking moments most of us experience, and which is an incredibly powerful reminder of the importance of family and friendships in all our lives.
“Last Minutes with Oden” was just named Best Documentary and Best Video at the 2010 Vimeo Awards, chosen from over 6500 film and video submissions.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the award-winning documentary short film.

“Frankie” is an award-winning short film directed by the Irish filmmaker Darren Thornton. Frankie is 15 years-old and preparing for fatherhood. He’s determined to be the best dad ever: he reads up on prenatal care, buys baby clothes, and lugs a baby doll around for practice. However, as his day goes on, Frankie begins to realize how impossible this might be for him. Stacked against him is an absence of role models; Frankie’s own father deserted him when he young, and as he carts the doll around town, Frankie points out the extent of the social meltdown in his Irish town.
It is easy for a film with this subject matter to play it sentimentally sweet. If Frankie can overcome his circumstances, it becomes an inspiring story of maturity, responsibility and man’s ability to overcome his surroundings. But Frankie’s on the fast track to becoming a piece of work himself. Rebellious by nature, conflict follows him wherever he goes: the clinic where he tries to take a lamaze class, the courts which he frequents for shoplifting and fighting, and the school from which he already has dropped out. While we cheer the earnest sincerity in Frankie’s voice about his wishes for self-improvement, the film remains ambiguous and doesn’t encourage us to have blind faith in happy endings.
This piece includes color photographs, as well as the acclaimed short film.

SPUR, Texas - "Red" Rountree shuffled into the bank and surveyed the teller windows.
He had done this twice before and knew the best way was to pick a bank within a full gas tank’s drive of home, hit it early before there were too many customers and then never, ever return to that city.
He walked slowly up to an open window and handed two manila envelopes to the teller. On the first, in red marker, was written "ROBBERY." The second envelope, he told her, was for the money.
"What do you mean?" the teller asked the bespectacled man with nearly translucent skin and wrinkled, knotted hands. "Are you kidding?"
"Hurry up and put the money in the envelope or you’ll get hurt," Rountree told her.
As the teller complied, Rountree became the oldest known bank robber in U.S. history. He was 91. (from "Last of the small-time bank robbers" by By Chelsea J. Carter)SPUR, Texas - "Red" Rountree shuffled into the bank and surveyed the teller... more

The indie film is like the blood that courses through the veins of the horror genre. Every big time horror personality started making little indie flicks (some of which have become classics) so that's why we pay them so much attention around these parts. You never know where the next Romero or Carpenter will come from. That being said one flick we've been keeping an eye is is The Night Shift and now that the movie has wrapped -- it's poster time!
The Night Shift is a supernatural-adventure-comedy about Rue Morgan, the undead night watchman at Pinewood Oaks Cemetery. Rue, along with his buddy Herb, a limbless corpse, spends his nights trying to keep the cemetery’s cantankerous residents in, and his days dreaming of a date with hard-nosed day-shifter, Claire. It’s an okay afterlife until a scourge of supernatural occurrences leaves Rue not only watching the cemetery, but also watching his back!
