Why did Congress waste six months? (or eight going on nine months?)
The House Republican strategy to link a normally routine increase in the nation’s debt limit with a crusade to slash spending has already had a high cost, threatening the nation’s credit rating and making the United States look dysfunctional and incompetent to the rest of the world.
But that’s not the most awful thing about it.
What’s even worse is that this entirely artificial, politician-created crisis has kept government from doing what taxpayers expect it to do: Solve the problems citizens care about.

Since corporations began laying off millions during the economic crisis several years ago, there’s a phrase that’s became all-too-common. Somebody complains about work. Somebody else replies that, “At least you have a job.” We can all use a silver lining on our dark days, but after awhile these six words lose their power to console.
Five days a week, we drag ourselves into the cube farm, into temporary, makeshift work spaces, many of us banging our fists against our internal walls in hopes that someday it will end. One recent study shows that 82 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with their current jobs. Harvard Business School puts the number at a 23-year low. Linebacker by day, part-time knives salesman after school: Scenes from '4th and Forever'
In this scene from the premiere of "4th and Forever," Jackrabbits' linebacker Devin Jackson works part-time selling kitchen knives after school to help support his family. He stops in to see The Hunts' and give them a demonstration, hoping that their support for the Long Beach Poly team will help him make a sale.
"4th and Forever"" chronicles the 2010 football season of Long Beach Polytechnic High School, touted by Sports Illustrated as the "Sports School of the Century" and boasts the largest roster of high school players who have gone on to the NFL. After decades of success, Poly had a down year in 2009. They had their worst season in 15 years and lost to local rival Lakewood for the first time in over 25 years. Looking at the works of Spanish street artist, Sr. X often seen provocative messages masked as vintage advertisements. Sr. X draws inspiration from pop culture, movies and urban legends and creates stencil artwork that are becoming more prevalent within Spains urban landscape.
Sr. X creates his own identity with his amazing stencil/ spray paint work and collaging. There’s less of a concern about exactitude of the stencils (which, by the way, there is) and more concern about the art, with a welcomed cheeky tone on and off the streets. Female automotive engineers launched first mass-produced electric car by General Motors
Britta Gross, director of Global Energy Systems and Infrastructure Commercialization for General Motors, is literally getting the world ready for the advent of the electric car with the Chevrolet Volt.
Gross, with a degree in electrical engineering, is in charge of preparing states to be "plug-in ready" for the Volt by working with energy and utility companies to produce the necessary charging infrastructure to support the new vehicle. She then goes to federal, state and local governments to help pave the way for the implementation of new policies to support electric cars.
Gross has worked in the field for over 25 years, but she's still an anomaly.
Women have been gaining ground as engineers since the 1980s, according to a National Science Foundation report, but in 2006 women were still only 19 percent of those holding a bachelor's degree in engineering, like Gross.
In late March, Gross joined three other female engineers in a Web chat--online meetings where participants can exchange written instant messages--about the Chevrolet Volt, the first electric car with extended range capability by General Motors that all four women helped create, market and distribute.
"The Volt is a great demonstration of the opportunities that exist for women," Teri Quigley, plant manager at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, the production place for the Chevrolet Volt, said during the online forum. "It requires hard work just like any job, but the door is wide open for success."
Women make up less than 11 percent of working engineers and earn 86 percent of the salaries of their male counterparts in engineering.
Engineering salaries are among the highest earnings for college graduates, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In electrical engineering, the median salary for the lowest 10 percent of the field is $52,990, while the median salary for the highest paid 10 percent of engineers is $125,810.

Women's Jobs Pop Up in Kashmir 'Mushroom Villages'
It's hard for many women in rural Kashmir to find income opportunities, but mushroom cultivation is popping up as a possible solution. The work can be done from home and a university is helping with training and marketing.
Mushrooms are creating a substantial profit for the valley's women, who have not had much financial freedom but can now contribute to their families.
Women here say that strict gender roles hinder their economic opportunities and the region's economic development. The female work participation rate is just 25.6 percent nationally and 22.5 percent in the state of Kashmir and Jammu, according to India's most recent census in 2001.
To reduce unemployment and empower women, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir, SKUAST-K, created two model "mushroom villages" in 2009 and 2010 in the northeastern districts of Baramulla and Budgam.
Nazir Ahmad Munshi, senior scientist at SKUAST-K's Mushroom Research and Training Center, says the program offers trainings to women first at the university, then at demonstration centers in their villages and finally at their individual homes. Later, they give them materials to start production.
So far, 136 women are producing mushrooms in their homes in Budgam village and 65 women are producing mushrooms in Baramulla village to sell at local markets.
