Story by Marsha Glass| Hood Watch Media,British Columbia|March 9, 2011, marks the 14th anniversary of the death of iconic rapper Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls, aka Christopher Wallace. The rapper, who shot to stardom rapidly then died in a hail of gunfire, passed away on Mar. 9, 1997, just before his sophomore album, Life after Death, was released on Mar. 26. It has since sold over 10 million copies.
Smalls was born in Brooklyn on May 21, 1972. By the age of 17, Smalls, the son of a preschool teacher, dropped out of school and began dealing drugs, according to IMBd. But, after a nine-month stay in a jail in North Carolina following a drug exchange, Smalls decided to make a life change. He borrowed a friend’s recorder and began recording hip hop, which he started passing out around the local area. The tapes made their way to local radio stations in New York.
Sean “Diddy” Combs signed Smalls to Uptown Records, then to Bad Boy Records, when he started the label in 1992. In addition to his platinum debut album, Ready to Die, which was released in 1994, Smalls appeared on a remix of “Real Love” by Mary J. Blige in 1993, and on a solo track on the Who’s the Man? soundtrack. Smalls was named MC of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards in 1995. He was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Solo Rap Performance for “Big Poppa” in 1996, and for “Hypnotize” in 1998.
Smalls is also remembered for his infamous feud with West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur, who was shot in Las Vegas, NV, on Sept. 7, 1996, and passed away on Sept. 13. Shakur and Smalls were originally friends, but, on Nov. 30, 1994, Smalls and Combs were recording in the same building with Shakur. In the lobby, Shakur was held at gunpoint, robbed of $40,000 in jewelry, and ultimately shot five times. Smalls rushed to the lobby, indicating he was concerned about his friend, but Shakur believed that Smalls had known about the shooting beforehand, and failed to warn him about it. Shakur recovered, but the East Coast v. West Coast war had begun.
Then, in 1996, at the age of 25, Shakur was gunned down and, ultimately, died. Smalls tried to put the war behind the rap community by declaring it over, and did press on the west coast. But, on Mar. 9, 1997, he was gunned down and died, as well, at the age of 24. Although the murder of Smalls remains unsolved, many believe it was an act of retaliation for the death of Shakur. Apple's latest iPod Nano and Microsoft's freshest Zune, both released within the past week, offer these kinds of perks and plenty more. Neither is right for everyone, but both serve as a reminder of how far digital media players have come in just a few years.
Apple has sold more than 100 million iPod Nanos since launching the first one in 2005, and the latest version should cement its title as king of the prom.
Microsoft's Zune player has gotten steadily better since it was first released in 2006. Its latest effort, the Zune HD, gets several things right, including video and music playback. Still, there's still plenty of room for improvement.Apple's latest iPod Nano and Microsoft's freshest Zune, both released within... more
