Sandusky

SANDUSKY (WJRT) -- (11/08/09) -- Millions of dollars worth of drugs are off the streets tonight after authorities broke up a late night smuggling operation this weekend.
Authorities say they made a $10 million drug bust after a small airplane landed at the Sandusky City Airport in Sanilac County.
Border patrol agents first noticed the small plane in Port Huron and on a hunch, followed it up to Sandusky. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter watched the plane drop seven or eight large bags onto the runway. Authorities say the plane picked up one bag and took off.

Diagram of a bong in operation.
The rationale behind the use of a bong is the claim that the cooling effect of the water helps to reduce the chance of burning the mouth, airways, and lungs, thus many claim that using a bong to smoke is safer. The water can trap some heavier particles and water-soluble molecules, preventing them from entering the smoker's airways.[5] Thus the mechanics of a bong function similarly to those of a laboratory gas washing bottle. This "filtration" can lead to the belief that bongs are less damaging than other smoking methods.
However, a 2000 NORML-MAPS study found that "water pipes filter out more psychoactive THC than they do other tars, thereby requiring users to smoke more to reach their desired effect".[6] In the study, smoke from cannabis supplied by the NIDA was drawn through a number of smoking devices and analyzed. An inhalation machine, adjusted to mimic the puff length of cannabis smokers, drew smoke through a standard bong, a small portable bong with a folding stem, a bong with a motorized paddle that thoroughly mixes the smoke with the water, and two different types of vaporizers. Comparisons to traditional non-filtered smoking methods were not included in these experiments.
MAPS[7] also reviewed a study that examined the effects and composition of water-filtered and non-filtered cannabis and tobacco smoke. It found that when alveolar macrophages were exposed to unfiltered smoke, their ability to fight bacteria was reduced, unlike exposure to water-filtered smoke. It also found substantial epidemiological evidence of a lower incidence of carcinoma among tobacco smokers who used water-pipes, as opposed to cigarettes, cigars, and regular pipes. "It appears that water filtration can be effective in removing components from cannabis smoke that are known toxicants... The effectiveness of toxicant removal is related to the smoke's water contact area.
Specially designed water pipes, incorporating particulate filters and gas-dispersion frits, would likely be most effective in this regard; the gas-dispersion frit serves to break up the smoke into very fine bubbles, thereby increasing its water-contact area."[7] This study suggests that a bong's smoke is less harmful than unfiltered smoke.Comparison with other smoking methods

A Doctor’s Word--Tips to Escape the Smoking Trap
New America Media, Commentary, Erin Marcus, M.D., Posted: Oct 20, 2009
Editor's Note: In the debut of A Doctor's Word, Dr. Erin Marcus wrote about an African-American man's effort to quit smoking cigarettes. This week, she offers practical advice for all who would like to kick the habit. Dr. Marcus is associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
In my first column, I shared the story of Lawrence Jones, a 55-year-old man who smoked for 35 years until July, when he decided to quit. In his words, he was “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Giving up the addictive habit of tobacco is extremely difficult, and Jones’ success depended on the help of a counselor, smoking cessation classes, nicotine replacement patches, and the support of a friend. Here are some things that helped Jones, as well as tips I’ve garnered over the years as a primary care physician.
To succeed at quitting, you first have to decide that this is something you really want to do. Medicine and classes won’t work unless you have made a commitment. In Jones’ case, a graphic video that his counselor played at his first stop smoking class made him resolve to quit. It showed pictures of smokers that he could not forget: a man missing an eye and part of his nose from mouth cancer, and people breathing through tracheotomies – holes that doctors surgically cut in their throats when cancer prevented them from breathing. “You have to be willing to give it your all,” Jones said. “But the pros outweigh the cons.”
If you can, join a stop smoking group. This can be difficult to do, as often these are held during working hours. But if you can find one at a time convenient for you, these groups can be very helpful in providing support and strategies and keeping you focused on your goal. Jones attended seven hour-long classes and describes them as crucial to his success. Call your local county health department or hospital and ask if they offer or know of a local smoking cessation program. The American Lung Association is a national organization that can direct you to smoking cessation classes in your region: 1-800- lung USA, or www.ffsonline.org

After the basketball legend is shown smoking a cigar on public golf course, San Francisco officials remind PGA about ban before Presidents Cup.
The newspaper published photos Tuesday of Michael Jordan smoking a cigar during a practice round at Harding Park, despite the city's ban on smoking on public golf courses. City officials asked the PGA Tour to remind Jordan he can't smoke while being an honorary assistant at the Presidents Cup.
"It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal and that we would appreciate their support," Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg told the Chronicle.
As for enforcing the $100 fine on Jordan? Matt Dorsey, the spokesman for City Atty. Dennis Herrera, remains unsure how that will play out. After the basketball legend is shown smoking a cigar on public golf course, San... more
